ABBA / “The Essential Collection” three-disc deluxe box review

ABBA / The Essential Collection 2CD+DVDThe whole point of ABBA Gold, when it was released in 1992, was to replace all those ‘bargain bin’ licensed compilations that were prevalent during the 1980s with something definitive, something that exuded quality. This was clearly very successful, because the hits collection has sold over five million copies in the UK alone.

Since that time there has been a spate of further compilations with More Gold (1993), The Definitive Collection (2001), 18 Hits (2005) and Number Ones (2006). If you add to the mix box sets such as The Complete Studio Recordings from 2005 it is clear that there have been quite a few options for collectors and casual fans alike over the years.

Tori Amos / Gold Dust review

Tori Amos / Gold Dust review

It’s been 20 years since Tori Amos‘ incredible debut Little Earthquakes. There is no sign of any anniversary or deluxe reissues of that album (although alternate takes of some tracks were issued on the recommended Piano box set), but what we do have is a new record – a collection of re-recordings with lush string arrangements – Tori’s personal selections from two decades of output.

FIRST LISTEN: Peter Gabriel / “So” demos from the super deluxe box

Peter Gabriel / "So" demos first listen

In his letter to me in response to criticisms about the forthcoming So super deluxe edition box set, Peter Gabriel stated that the demo disc in the box – referred to as “So DNA” – was where he did most of his work. He trawled through “thousands of hours of demos” mostly on cassette tape “looking for the pieces that would tell the story of how the songs evolved”. With editor Dickie Chappell, Peter Gabriel has created unique versions of all the album tracks by piecing together different demos and creating an audio patchwork that, for the most part, takes you from Gabriel working alone at a piano to almost complete finished productions.

Steve Miller Band / album reissues

Steve Miller Band reissues

The Steve Miller Band have had their first five albums reissued recently by Edsel records. Children of the Future, Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace and Number 5 have all been remastered with the 1968 debut (Children of the Future) containing a bonus track in the form of Sittin’ In Circles.

Apart from this, everything else is a straight one-disc reissue with no bonus material, although the albums are very well presented in six panel card digi-paks utilising original artwork, and booklets with informative notes, complete with recollections of Steve Miller himself.

These albums were all reasonably successful in the US in particular, and Brave New World is known for Paul McCartney contributing bass, drums and vocals to closer, My Dark Hour (under the pseudonym Paul Ramon).

Number 5, the appropriately titled fifth album, was released in 1970 but the Steve Miller Band would find worldwide success a few years later with The Joker and then Fly Like An Eagle, as well as enjoying a massive hit single in the early eighties with Abracadabra.
