Suzanne Vega / Close-Up series 6-disc deluxe hardcover book
Suzanne Vega‘s Close-Up series started back in 2010 and since that time four volumes have been released with the singer-songwriter reinterpreting large chunks of her catalogue creating four new thematic albums.
The packaging of these individual releases wasn’t very exciting (simple small card sleeves) so it is pleasing to note that April sees the release of a special hardcover book edition celebrating Close-Up that combines all four CDs from the series and offers a fifth CD that collects all the digital-only bonus tracks from the individual album releases.

George Michael / Symphonica
George Michael has this week released Symphonica, a live album from his 2011-2 tour that features orchestral / big band arrangements of many of his songs, alongside a generous selection of covers.
Although in recent years we’ve had some one-off singles (December Song, True Faith, White Light) an album of new studio material has not materialised. Indeed, remarkably, Michael has only released one ‘proper’ album in the last 18 years (2004’s Patience).
While fans continue to wait for his muse to return, it is at least refreshing to be able to talk about the man in relation to some new music rather than read about him in the tabloid press as they report deliciously on some unfortunate incident (self inflicted or otherwise).

Andy Partridge is to reissue XTC‘s 1986 album Skylarking in April.
This new CD edition – out on his own APE label – will feature a number of changes including the addition of the track Dear God (always intended to for the album but left off due to record label concerns about US audience reaction), new artwork (consistent with Partridge’s original concept) and last but not least corrected polarity.

The Girlie Show: Cyndi Lauper / She’s So Unusual: 3D pack shot

As regular readers will know, the Cyndi Lauper She’s So Unusual reissue has been controversial, both for the pricing and due to the content missing from the two-disc set.
Here’s a first look at what caused the consternation and the high price point. Yes, it’s the “3D” packaging which is supposed to recreate the bedroom featured in the Girls Just Want To Have Fun video. Fair play, it’s creative, but with no option for a less Barbie-like, no-frills, two-CD version, the folly of the project remains.
