We started with the first Capitol release (Meet The Beatles!) yesterday, but thought we’d mix things up a bit by skipping forward to the eighth Capitol album (not including The Beatles’ Story) and that is 1965’s Help!

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: First Pictures / The Beatles U.S. Albums box set

front

We thought we’d start the new year with something very special. Just before Christmas, Apple Corps/Universal Music invited SuperDeluxeEdition in to take an exclusive look at the forthcoming Beatles box set, The U.S. Albums.

As previously announced on this blog, this special collection is released on 20 January 2014 and contains 13 CDs; titles released by Capitol Records in the 1960s that, for the most part, were quite different from their UK counterparts (new titles, alternate track listing, occasional mix differences).

Flagging HMV closes more stores

hmv2

UK music retailer HMV is closing another of its London stores. The shop in Islington will shut for business on 25 January 2014. This follows the news that the 150 Oxford Street store will soon become a Sports Direct.

Apart from closing shops, launching a rather poor (non-transactional) website and talking about ‘digital strategy’ it’s hard to understand what new owners Hilco are actually DOING.

John Barry / The Deep soundtrack

thedeep2

Hot Shot Records will reissue John Barry‘s soundtrack to Peter Yates’ 1977 film The Deep in February 2014.

As with many of his James Bond soundtracks, Barry collaborated with a high profile singer as part of this project and in this instance he and Donna Summer created the song Deep Down Inside (Theme From The Deep). The track was a top five UK hit as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe.

Second Hand News / Xmas 2013

It’s that time of the month! SDE has been shopping for used records, largely in charity or thrift stores. Here’s what we’ve found…

A-ha / The Living Daylights (die-cut gatefold 7″ – 1987)

One of A-ha‘s very best singles, The Living Daylights is unfortunately associated with a rather poor James Bond film. This is a German gatefold seven-inch with die-cut ‘bullet holes’ on the front spelling out the name of the track. The band re-recorded the song for their third album Stay On These Roads (having been rather miffed with co-producer and Bond stalwart John Barry), so this single version is found only here and various compilations. The instrumental B-side is unreleased on CD.

Ashford & Simpson / Solid (12″ single 1985)

The US twelve-inch of the Ashford & Simpson classic. This Capitol Record’s release contains the ‘Special Club Mix’ of Solid which clocks in at 6:12 and is remixed by Francois Kevorkian. A 5:15 ‘Dub Mix’ is on the B-side.

Top 5: Botched Beatles releases

Top 5: Botched Beatles / Movie Medley

Apple take The Beatles’ legacy very seriously. This has been illustrated recently by the fact that they are refusing to allow the reverb-drenched and fake stereo Capitol versions of some songs appear on the new U.S. Albums box set despite the fact that they are historically accurate.

However, Apple didn’t always rule the Beatles’ domain with an iron fist and EMI have allowed some rather dubious releases into the shops over the years and decades.

Here’s our favourite five Beatles releases that shouldn’t have happened:
