Mark Lanegan / Has God Seen My Shadow? An Anthology 1989-2011

Mark Lanegan / "Has God Seen My Shadow: An Anthology 1989-2011"

Having recently produced the really lavish Lee Hazlewood box set, US label Light In The Attic keep things relatively simple for this two-CD (and three-LP) exploration of the solo work of American musician and singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan.

Best known for the Screaming Trees and being in Queens Of The Stone Age, Lanegan has semi-regularly put out solo albums for over two decades starting in 1990 with The Winding Sheet which was issued on Sub Pop. This Anthology uses that record as a starting point and ends with 2004’s Bubblegum (issued on Beggars Banquet). That’s only half the story though, because the entire second disc in this set is previously unreleased. Many date of those tracks date from the late nineties and early noughties.

Kylie Minogue / “Kiss Me Once” box

kissme_box

Kylie Minogue‘s role as a judge on the UK version of “The Voice” has certainly raised her profile here in Britain. She is taking full advantage, with the impending release of her 12th studio album Kiss Me Once.

There is a deluxe edition that adds two songs to the 11-track album (Mr President and Sleeping With The Enemy) and comes with a rather lame looking bonus DVD which features the video to first single Into The Blue, alongside some very thin, inessential content such as the trailer for Into The Blue, and the making of Into The Blue… you get the idea.

DEAL OF THE DAY / The Beatles: The US Albums 13CD box set

beatles2

Who wants a Beatles “US Albums” box for around £60? Yes, two weeks after the release, Amazon in Canada have reduced The Beatles US Albums box set to just $106 Canadian (correct at the time of writing).

If you’re are in the UK the combination of such a low price and favourable exchange rates make this an absolute steal. Obviously, remember to factor in possible import or VAT duties, but as a comparison this set is £145 on Amazon UK, or £95 more expensive!

Belinda Carlisle Anthology available for US shipping

anthology

Belinda Carlisle‘s forthcoming five-disc Anthology was previously only available direct-to-fans via the Belinda Carlisle Official Store, with licensing issues denying those in North America the ability to order the deluxe set.

The good news is that US fans can now order The Anthology via Amazon UK, who will ship the item to the States. At the time of writing, it’s priced a little higher than on the official store, although Amazon will deduct UK taxes before shipping, to bring the cost down to under £60.

FIRST PICTURES: David Lynch / The Big Dream super deluxe edition

front

In 2012 UK label Sunday Best issued David Lynch‘s debut album Crazy Clown Time as a limited super deluxe edition. While that set boasted a lavish book, the two LPs and CD repeated the same 14 tracks from the album. There was no bonus material at all.

For last year’s follow-up album, The Big Dream, the same team have now put together another super deluxe edition, but have ended up with something rather different. The flashy and undoubtedly expensive-to-produce book is gone and replaced with a rather more modest seven-inch box set.

Leo Sayer: 40 Years in Music part 2

leo_purple

Late last year we spoke to Leo Sayer about his 40 years in the music business. We chatted for so long that the interview was split into two parts. If you haven’t read part one then you should click here first, but FINALLY (!) we bring you part two of the story of Sayer’s career. He had just arrived in America in the mid 1970s and manager Adam Faith was determined to make a success of Leo in the United States…

Leo Sayer: When Adam [Faith, Leo’s manager] said I was going to work with [hot shot producer] Richard Perry, I said “What? – he’s boring!” I didn’t want to do that, I wanted to work with someone groovy and funky! I was finding my soul. But anyway, we had a meeting with Richard Perry and he was very dynamic, it must be said, but he said “I don’t see you as a songwriter”, and I went “What?!” – because that’s what I did, I was a songwriter – but he said “No, no it’s the voice I’m fascinated with”. So there was a lot of arguments. One time I was going [to go] back on the plane and Richard called me and said “turn the car around and come back to the studio”. So I went back and there was this amazing array of musicians there. So I thought, I better do this… I gave in on a lot of my ethics with “Endless Flight” but it turned out that it was an album where the first hit on it was a Leo Sayer song [“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”], so out of all of that Richard Perry posturing, saying “you’re not going to write any songs” in the end he turned around and said the first single is going to be that song you wrote [laughs].

Fans scathing over Cyndi reissue

Cyndi Lauper / "She's So Unusual" 30th Anniversary Celebration

High Price • Fanciful packaging • Missing remixes

Sony’s forthcoming reissue of Cyndi Lauper‘s 1983 album She’s So Unusual – revealed here last week – has be already been slammed by readers of SuperDeluxeEdition, two months before it’s due for release

The two-CD deluxe edition which comes in elaborate packaging with a “reusable sticker set”, vinyl cut-outs of Lauper’s outfits and a “3D fold-out backdrop of the bedroom featured in the Girls Just Want To Have Fun video” has been criticised primarily for its failure to include period remixes, something compounded by a nine-track bonus disc that will struggle to reach half-capacity.

Chicago / Chicago VI Hybrid SACD

chicagovi_sacd

Audiophile specialists Mobile Fidelity will issue a hybrid SACD of Chicago‘s Chicago VI next month.

The 1973 release was actually the band’s fifth studio album (although 1971’s Chicago at Carnegie Hall, made it the sixth overall) and it featured the hits Just You ‘N’ Me and Feelin’ Stronger Every Day. We do not expect this SACD to include anything other than the ten album tracks.

Rod Stewart / “Live 1976-1998: Tonight’s The Night” new 4CD box set

ET+Rod+Live

Live 1976-1998: Tonight’s The Night is a new Rod Stewart live anthology to be released by Warner Bros. Records in March 2014.

The chronological collection spans 20 years and features 58 previously unreleased tracks starting in 1976 circa A Night On The Town and working its way through the years with live renditions of classics like Maggie May, Every Picture Tells A Story, You Wear It Well, Some Guys Have All The Luck and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy – to name but a few. The selection ends in 1998 rather unpromisingly (at least on paper) with covers of Britpop-era tracks from Primal Scream and Oasis.

Paul McCartney / Wings Over America deluxe slipcase

Paul McCartney‘s Wings Over America box set last night won the “Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package” at the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

The fifth release in McCartney’s rather sluggish Archive Collection reissue programme, Wings Over America in its box set form was the most lavish to date.  It was released in May 2013 and featured four books, including an amazing ‘Tour Itinerary’ volume which contained a seemingly endless Continue reading “Wings Over America deluxe box wins a GRAMMY award”
