Nik Kershaw / “The Riddle” 2CD expanded deluxe edition

front

There’s two big differences in how Nik Kershaw approached The Riddle – his second album of 1984 – and his debut Human Racing. The first difference is that he was no longer writing songs trying to get a record deal, and the second is that he had very little time to put The Riddle together “two weeks to write and demo nine of the tracks” is how he puts it in the booklet included with Universal’s new two-CD deluxe edition.

Unfortunately, having to turnaround the album so quickly did take its toll somewhat on the quality of the songs. Know How starts well enough with lots of funky slap bass and a melodic verse melody, but wimps out totally with a non-existent chorus (“It’s easy when you know how“) and then rather outstays its welcome, lasting for almost five minutes.

The Eagles / “The Studio Albums 1972-1979” limited edition vinyl box

eagles_vinyl

The Eagles‘ original Asylum Records studio albums issued in the seventies, will be released on 180g vinyl, in a special limited edition box set called The Studio Albums 1972-1979.

Each LP within the box features replicas of the original album packaging with two special artwork upgrades – the sleeve of the debut album, Eagles, will be released as the band originally intended, with no glue flaps, so the cover folds out into a poster. Hotel California will include a replica of the poster from the original issue with band photos by Norman Seeff in full colour, for the first time.

Tears For Fears / Everybody Wants To Rule The World: The Collection

ruletheworld_collection

We know you’ve already spent your Tears For Fears budget on pre-ordering The Hurting deluxe box set, but we thought we’d draw your attention to this slightly weird ‘budget’ greatest hits that has been put out via Universal Music’s Spectrum imprint in the last few weeks.

It’s a mix of classic singles, B-sides and the occasional oddity. It’s deliberately not ‘comprehensive’ but is still rather intriguing. So you get Mad World and Change, but not Pale Shelter. Songs From The Big Chair selections include Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World, but not Head Over Heels. Mothers Talk is included, but in the not-really-as-good ‘US Remix’ re-recording.

Japanese CD of the Day / Kate Bush: “Never For Ever” supermasters reissue

NFE
Japanese reissue Never For Ever reissue from 1990 (TOCP-6546)

Although Kate Bush‘s third album Never For Ever didn’t sell quite as well as her 1978 debut The Kick Inside, it did reach number one on the UK album charts in September 1980, something both of her first two records failed to do (Lionheart was issued in late 1978).

“Over the Bridge of Time: A Paul Simon Retrospective”

cover

You can’t accuse Sony/Legacy of not hedging their bets.

In October, as previously reported, they will release a 15-disc Complete Albums Collection box set that gathers together all of Paul Simon‘s solo long-players. Good as that set looks, it could simply be too much Paul Simon for you to handle, and Sony want to offer you a bite-sized portion. So on the same day they will also release a one-CD hits package (or a ‘retrospective’, to give it the appropriate gravitas) that includes some of his best known songs from Simon and Garfunkel AND his solo output.

Pet Shop Boys / “Love Is A Bourgeois Construct”: 9-track CD single

love_is_a_borgeois

The Pet Shop Boys release a second single from their well-received album Electric on 30 September 2013.

Love Is A Bourgeois Construct is being issued as a limited edition 9-track CD single, as Vocal was back in July. That CD is already hard to get hold, so these do seem to be genuinely limited.

Unlike Vocal, the Love Is A Bourgeois Construct CD single has a couple of new tracks – namely Entschuldigung! and Get It Online – to go with all the remixesThis comes in a gatefold CD wallet, and is likely to be consistent with Vocal and have an inner wallet too. The packaging is relatively lavish compared to the recent EMI releases.

Track listing:

  • 1. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Nighttime Radio Edit)
  • 2. Entschuldigung!
  • 3. Get It Online
  • 4. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (The Penelopes Remix)
  • 5. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Claptone Remix)
  • 6. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Little Boots Discothèque Edit)
  • 7. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Dave Audé Big Dirty Dub)
  • 8. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Claptone Instrumental)
  • 9. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (Little Boots Discothèque Dub)

Elton John / “Diving Board” Super Deluxe denied “Target” bonus tracks

diving_board_sde
“Target” customers get two exclusive bonus songs on a 21-track CD, not included in this very expensive box set

In June we told you about the Super Deluxe Edition box set of Elton John‘s new album The Diving Board (released next week).

This set was retailing for £115 at that time (it later dropped) and that seemed like incredibly poor value, since it contains the same extended 19-track version of the album available on the deluxe CD, a 15-track 2LP gatefold vinyl version of the album, a DVD (content unknown) and a book.

Tears For Fears / Listen to Pale Shelter remix from The Hurting box

The B-sides and remixes CD contains both 7″ and 12″ versions of “Pale Shelter (You Don’t Give Me Love)”

In anticipation of the forthcoming Hurting box setTears For Fears have released a stream via SoundCloud of the very original 12-inch version of their 1982 single Pale Shelter.

Actually titled Pale Shelter (You Don’t Give Me Love), this was the band’s second single after debut Suffer The Children was issued in November 1981. Neither 45 charted, and Roland Orzabal revealed his feelings about these early disappointments to SuperDeluxeEdition editor Paul Sinclair, when interviewed for the sleeve notes of the forthcoming reissue:

Clash “Sound System” box to be the last reissue, says Mick Jones

The Clash Sound System box set

Mick Jones has told Rolling Stone that there will be no more archival Clash reissues after the Sound System box set.

When asked about specifically about the lack of live recordings on the new box he responds by saying they’re “already out there” (i.e. bootlegs) and then goes on to say “I’m not even thinking about any more Clash releases. This is it for me, and I say that with an exclamation mark.”

In a fascinating interview he says there are “not really” any outtakes left in the vault and acknowledges that the band should have probably taken a break, rather then splitting up.

Bros / “Push” 25th Anniversary 3CD Deluxe Edition track listing

push

Cherry Pop will reissue eighties boy band Bros‘ debut album Push as a three-CD 25th anniversary deluxe edition on 28 October 2013.

The 1988 album, which sold 1.2 million copies in the first year of release in Britain alone, contains five top 5 UK singles, including the number one I Owe You Nothing. It would be the band’s only album as a trio, before the acrimonious departure of bassist Craig Logan.

This three CD set contains a wealth of remixes that kept Shep Pettibone (and other remixers) very busy at the time, including the 18-minute “Over 18 Mix” of I Owe You Nothing, six versions of When Will I Be Famous? including the sample heavy “Contender Dub Mix” and the various B-side tracks, such as The Boy Is Dropped, Silent Night (technically an ‘A’ side), and The Big Push Overture.

In total, 21 bonus tracks in this remastered Bros-fest.
