Cabaret Voltaire / #8385 Collected Works 1983-1985 multi-format box

box

Cabaret Voltaire will release a very special box set on 4 November via Mute Records.

#8385 Collected Works 1984- 1985 is a weighty six CD, four vinyl and two DVD box set that includes remastered versions of four of Cabaret Voltaire’s mid-period releases on CD and vinyl: The Crackdown (1983), Micro-Phonies (1984), Drinking Gasoline (1985) and The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord (1985).

A further CD collects the band’s twelve inch versions from the period, and a final disc of unreleased tracks, called Earthshaker, completes the CD element of the set.

The first of the two DVDs, Cabaret Voltaire Live, collates two live shows, the Bedford Boys Club (18.08.84) and Hammersmith Palais (02.12.84). The second DVD sees the DVD debut of the 1985 experimental video Gasoline In Your Eye and adds the four promotional videos from the time.

#8385 Collected Works 1983-1985 will be a limited numbered edition, with only 500 copies being made. These will include a 40-page booklet with photographs, notes and essays. All audio is remastered from the original tapes.

Paul McCartney / “New” album announced for October

new_cover
This is the cover of “New” – Paul McCartney’s new album

Paul McCartney‘s new album is to be called ‘New’ and will be released on 14 October 2013.

The record will be McCartney’s first ‘proper’ studio album since 2007’s Memory Almost Full, his longest gap between pop records in his 50-year career.

The title track for the album has been made available, with Paul describing it to the BBC as “catchy”, adding, “it’s summery, it’s a love song. I think people will recognise it as definitely me.”

The track was produced by Mark Ronson, but four different producers have contributed to the album, including Paul Epworth, who co-wrote and produced Adele’s Bond theme Skyfall. Ethan Johns and, most intriguingly Giles Martin (son of George, of course), are the other two producers who worked on the record.

‘New’ will be a 12-track album, with iTunes showing a ‘Deluxe Edition’ of 14 tracks. There is likely to be a physical deluxe too, with enhanced packaging, as well as a vinyl version. It will be interesting to see with McCartney bothers with physical single releases.

No song titles are currently available, other than ‘New’. Amazon US have a pre-order available for the standard CD.

What do you think of the track “New”? Leave a comment and let us know!

BOX SET ALERT: The Who / Tommy Super Deluxe Edition CD/Blu-ray set

The Who Tommy

Universal will release a Super Deluxe Edition box set of The Who‘s Tommy on 11 November 2013.

The four-disc set will celebrate the 1969 rock opera by including the remastered album, a CD featuring 20 Pete Townshend demos (and a few band demos), a hi-res Blu-ray with the album remixed into 5.1 surround sound and a further CD (“Live bootleg”) featuring a live performance of the album (from a show at the Capital Theatre, Ottowa, Canada on 15 October 1969). Three tracks on the live disc  – I’m Free, Tommy’s Holiday Camp and We’re Not Gonna Take It – are taken from later shows of the same era.

The box will also include a poster and an 80-page hardcover book with slip case (looks similar to the Quadrophenia one included in the Director’s Cut box). The book will feature, amongst other things, a 20,000-word essay by Who aficionado Richard Barnes.

A 2CD Deluxe Edition version will also be available, as well as a double vinyl edition.

Oh Yes We Can Love: A History Of Glam Rock / Sneak peek at artwork

Oh Yes We Can Love: A History Of Glam Rock 5-disc box

Universal’s forthcoming 5-disc box set, Oh Yes We Can Love: A History Of Glam Rock box set stirred up some controversy when it was first announced here earlier this month, thanks to it’s broad definition of what ‘glam rock’ represents and its exploration of glam’s roots combined with an examination of its influence in the 21st century. A lively debate ensued with comments ranging from “really impressed” and “excellent track listing” to “terrible waste of an opportunity”!

Whichever side of the fence you choose to sit, we thought you might be interested in an exclusive peak inside the superb 100-page booklet, which is full of great single art, fun glam ‘factz’ and an essay by Barney Hoskyns.

All artwork below is by Phil Smee and the GlamFactz are written by Mark Wood and Daryl Easlea.

Oh Yes We Can Love: A History Of Glam Rock 5CD box is issued on 28 October. Track listings and further details on this set can be found here.

Gary Moore / Back On The Streets expanded CD reissue

Universal Music will reissue an expanded version of Gary Moore’s first solo album, Back On The Streets on 23 September 2013.

The album is remastered by Andy Pearce and features four B-sides / alternate versions as extra tracks. An updated booklet includes notes by Malcolm Dome, in addition to photos of memorabilia.

Back On The Streets was originally released in 1978 and is best known for the UK top 10 single Parisienne Walkways, which features Phil Lynott. The album also features a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Don’t Believe A Word.

Suede / The Vinyl Collection box set

suede_vinylcollection

Suede have announced The Vinyl Collection, a numbered 11xLP box set which contains new vinyl pressings of all of their studio albums to date, and also finds space for 1997 B-side compilation Sci-Fi Lullabies. The latter, and A New Morning, are issued on vinyl for the first time as part of this set, which will be limited to 1500 copies.

All LPs remastered on 180 gram vinyl except Bloodsports which is pressed on 140 gram, using the existing master. The box also comes with a an exclusive book with 2013 interviews with the band and photos.

To be honest, we hesitate to recommend a Suede box set after the shameful debacle that was the Bloodsports deluxe box set. But as if to underline how crap that was, this new box is ALL their albums on vinyl for only £30 more than the Bloodsports deluxe, which gave you one LP, a CD, a book and a USB-thingy.

The new vinyl box is available EXCLUSIVELY through a new Suede online store. The first 150 pre-orders come with a free t-shirt and a tote bag. We think you are supposed to order the ‘fan bundle’ version on the site and hope for the best (it’s the same price as the non-fan bundle version). Just to show that Suede still don’t quite ‘get it’ when it comes to selling online, potential purchasers are told that “T-shirt sizing will be random” and “cannot be specified” when purchasing. That’s all right then.

The Vinyl Collection ships ‘on or before’ 21 October and you get an instant MP3 downloads of the whole thing when you pre-order.

You can place your order the box/bundle by clicking here.

The Vinyl Collection contains:

  • • Suede
  • • Dog Man Star (Double)
  • • Coming Up
  • • Head Music (Double)
  • • A New Morning
  • • Bloodsports
  • • Sci-Fi Lullabies (Triple)

+ an exclusive book with 2013 interviews with the band and photography.

The Grateful Dead / Sunshine Daydream concert box sets

cover

In August 1972, the Grateful Dead travelled to the US city of Veneta, in Oregon to throw a benefit concert for Chuck and Sue Kesey’s creamery. The Kesey’s had reached out to the rock band via Chuck’s brother Ken (author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest) because their yoghurt making operation was low on funds. On 27 August, a stage was duly erected, tickets were printed on the fronts of the Creamery’s yogurt labels and the gig generated enough money to keep the business afloat.

The whole thing was filmed and recorded and is know as the Sunshine Daydream concert. It has become one of the most talked-about shows in the Dead’s history.

On 16 September the full concert will be issued on CD and vinyl in two separate box sets. The 3CD box comes with a DVD that includes the previously unreleased Sunshine Daydream concert film featuring remastered picture and all new stereo and 5.1 audio mixes (done by Jeffrey Norman at TRI Studios).

The audio from the complete concert has been mixed and mastered to HDCD from the original 16 track tapes by Jeffrey Norman. The 4LP box doesn’t come with the video but is pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl.

A 3CD+Blu-ray version and some other exclusives are available direct from the Grateful Dead’s official website.

Happy Mondays included in new Original Album Series sets

original album series

Rhino will issue a new spate of Original Album Series collections on 2 September 2013, including this five-CD set from The Happy Mondays. Conveniently, it includes (almost) all the band’s official studio albums, notably the acclaimed Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches from 1990. As usual, don’t expect more than perfunctory packaging with card sleeves, and a thin card slipcase, but unarguable value as ever.

Madonna / “Something To Remember” vinyl reissue

str

Madonna‘s 1995 compilation album Something To Remember is being reissued on 2LP 180g vinyl by Warner Music on 9 September 2013.

The album – made up of mostly ballads – is a mixture of previously released material (I’ll Remember, Take A Bow, Crazy For You, Live To Tell) and a few new recordings, including the Massive Attack-produced I Want You, One More Chance and the rather fine single You’ll See, which reached the top ten almost everywhere.

Humble Pie / Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore: Complete Recordings

fillmore

Humble Pie (featuring Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton) recorded four albums and several singles before achieving their U.S. breakthrough with their 1971 the double-live set Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore.

The album was drawn from four shows played over two consecutive nights at the Fillmore East, and although only seven tracks were issued, the album ran for over an hour, thanks to some lengthy interpretations, including a 24-minute rendition of Dr John’s I Walk On Gilded Splinters (later covered by Paul Weller).

Omnivore Recordings / Universal have gathered all four shows from these performances and packaged them into this ‘Complete Recordings’ four-CD box set. There is no editing, or resequencing — just the four sets as they were played on May 28 and 29, 1971. The seven tracks that comprised the original album are joined here by 15 previously unissued performances—including the never-before-heard complete first set from 28 May. In total four hours of music across four CDs.

This has been mixed and mastered from the original multi-tracks under the supervision of Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley.

nightcafe

OMD will issue a special 10-track CD ‘single’ of Night Cafe from their album English Electric in September.

Night Cafe is the third 45 from the album, following Metroland and Dresden, and as well as four new remixes, this single proves to be a satisfying ’round up’ of various English Electric B-sides and non-album tracks. It includes, amongst others, the iTunes bonus track No Man’s Land, Record Store Day flipside Time Burns, and The Great White Silence from the Metroland single.

Night Cafe is released on 9 September 2013.

 Night Cafe track listing:

  • 1. Night Café
  • 2. Kill Me
  • 3. The Great White Silence
