Suzanne Vega‘s Close-Up series started back in 2010 and since that time four volumes have been released with the singer-songwriter reinterpreting large chunks of her catalogue creating four new thematic albums.
The packaging of these individual releases wasn’t very exciting (simple small card sleeves) so it is pleasing to note that April sees the release of a special hardcover book edition celebrating Close-Up that combines all four CDs from the series and offers a fifth CD that collects all the digital-only bonus tracks from the individual album releases. Edsel’s Suede CD single box set contains 24 CDs rounding up most (but not all) of the various extra tracks on the CDs / Cassettes / DVDs of the day. The Bloodsports 45s make their debut on the CD single format and the CD singles box also comes with a bonus DVD featuring 28 promo videos.
This set is £80 via the official Suede Shop, but is now available from Amazon UK for just £63 (at the time of writing). The vinyl version looks like it will be available to order on Amazon soon, also.
George Michael has this week released Symphonica, a live album from his 2011-2 tour that features orchestral / big band arrangements of many of his songs, alongside a generous selection of covers.
Although in recent years we’ve had some one-off singles (December Song, True Faith, White Light) an album of new studio material has not materialised. Indeed, remarkably, Michael has only released one ‘proper’ album in the last 18 years (2004’s Patience).
While fans continue to wait for his muse to return, it is at least refreshing to be able to talk about the man in relation to some new music rather than read about him in the tabloid press as they report deliciously on some unfortunate incident (self inflicted or otherwise). Roy Orbison‘s 1989 album Mystery Girl gets a 25th anniversary reissue in May 2014.
Released posthumously just two months after his death, Mystery Girl featured Orbison working with the songwriting talents of Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Bono and The Edge and spawned the hit single You Got It which was a transatlantic top ten hit.

Andy Partridge is to reissue XTC‘s 1986 album Skylarking in April.
This new CD edition – out on his own APE label – will feature a number of changes including the addition of the track Dear God (always intended to for the album but left off due to record label concerns about US audience reaction), new artwork (consistent with Partridge’s original concept) and last but not least corrected polarity. Daryl Hall and John Oates‘ 1981 album Private Eyes has been recently reissued as a SACD by audiophile specialist Mobile Fidelity.
The smash hit album continued two number one singles in the title track and I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) and this numbered “Ultradisc UHR” stereo disc is actually a hybrid SACD and so is compatible with all CD players.
Following on from a limited double picture disc version, pop culture gurus SPACELAB9 are issuing Dave Porter’s Original Score from the Television SeriesBreaking Bad as a black vinyl double LP.

US cinephiles The Criterion Collection will reissue The Beatles‘ 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night on blu-ray and DVD in June this year.
This new edition features a 4K digital film restoration approved by director Richard Lester and of particular interest to music fans is the fact that it comes with two soundtrack options: mono and a new 5.1 surround soundtrack created by Apple Records, both of which are in uncompressed DTS-HD Master Audio on the blu-ray. Continue reading “The Beatles / A Hard Day’s Night blu-ray with new 5.1 soundtrack”

As regular readers will know, the Cyndi LauperShe’s So Unusual reissue has been controversial, both for the pricing and due to the content missing from the two-disc set.
Here’s a first look at what caused the consternation and the high price point. Yes, it’s the “3D” packaging which is supposed to recreate the bedroom featured in the Girls Just Want To Have Fun video. Fair play, it’s creative, but with no option for a less Barbie-like, no-frills, two-CD version, the folly of the project remains. Continue reading “The Girlie Show: Cyndi Lauper / She’s So Unusual: 3D pack shot”
Unfortunately not a ‘proper’ new album from George Michael, Symphonica contains live-in-the-studio orchestral versions of some GM classics (no Carless Whisper) and some choice covers.
