This 2009 Japanese mini-LP CD of Prince‘s 1987 album Sign O’ The Times (cat number WPCR-13538/9) displays the usual stunning attention to detail that Japanese have become known for, in terms of CD packaging and presentation.

All the elements of the original vinyl are replicated, including the sticker that adorned the front cover – just in case you didn’t recognise his purpleness (or should that be his peach-and-black-ness?). The postcard that you could send off to join the Prince ‘Fan Club’ (cue nostalgia for the simpler times of life pre-internet…) is also included and shrunk down, Mike Teavee-style.

Mogwai / New album: “Rave Tapes” / limited box set edition

Scottish band Mogwai will issue a new album, Rave Tapes, on 20 January 2014.

The 10-track release is being issued in the UK/EU on Mogwai’s own Rock Action Records and via other labels various global territories, including Sub Pop in the US.

A special limited edition box set will be available, which will feature the album on vinyl, an exclusive twelve-inch record, a seven-inch single, a CD of Rave Tapes, a large format (12″ x 12″) book of studio photography by photographer Steve Gullick (shot during the recording sessions), and three similarly sized art prints. All vinyl is 180g and their will be a download code for audio content.

Frank Sinatra / Duets (Super Deluxe Edition)

This reissue celebrates twenty years since the first Frank Sinatra Duets album was released. The Super Deluxe Edition box comes with two LPs, two CDs and a DVD amongst other content.

The Waterboys /Fisherman’s Box (6CD Clamshell)

After a few weeks of delays, the excellent value 6CD version of The Waterboys‘ Fisherman’s Box is out today. This comes packaged in a small clamshell box rather than the deluxe edition’s twelve-inch box.

Various Artists / The Motown 7s Box (2CD or 3LP)

Universal offer up this collection of 14 rare and previously unreleased gems across seven seven-inch vinyl records. Highlights include Do I Love You by Frank Wilson – thought to be the world’s rarest Motown 45 as an original pressing. This numbered, limited release also contains new-to-vinyl tracks from Marvin Gaye, the Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. Music On Vinyl will issue a box set featuring Roy Orbison‘s first three albums, plus a newly curated fourth LP, in late November/early December 2013.

The Monument Vinyl Box Set collects Lonely and Blue from 1961, Crying from 1962, In Dreams from 1963, and the never before issued Oh! Pretty Woman described by Sony Music as the ‘missing’ Monument album masterpiece that could have, and should have been released as its title song, Oh, Pretty Woman was topping the charts in 1964.

The SDE Hot Product Price Watch

Dire Straits’ The Studio Albums 1978-1991 vinyl box set was just £70 when it first appeared on Amazon UK back at the end of September. Although it has gone up a little bit since then, it’s still fairly good value at £86. Buying from Amazon Germany will save you around £10 but you do have to factor in the shipping (normally very cheap). France matches the current UK price, and if you choose to pay up the Amazon US ‘import’ price, then you’re looking at a hefty £139 for this 8LP box set.

The 7CD+LP deluxe version of this Waterboys Fisherman’s Blues sessions set is out already but many fans have been waiting patiently for the cheaper 6CD clamshell version of Fisherman’s Box (finally released next week). The price for this has remained fairly consistent on Amazon UK at between £22 and £24. Those in the US should probably buy from Europe, because the price is almost twice as much on Amazon.com at the time of writing.

Ol’ Blue Eyes‘ Duets Super Deluxe was under £70 for a while in the UK but has risen to £83 in recent days. Amazon Germany’s €80 price equates to around £67, so for those in Europe, well worth picking this up from there. But what’s this? The US price (ignore the crazy import version) is only $62 or £38!! That’s a real bargain for the double vinyl and 2CD+DVD set.

QUICK LOOK: Alexander O’Neal / “Tabu Anthology” 8CD box set

Out on Monday 18 November is this stylish Alexander O’Neal Tabu Anthology box set. Six studio albums (1985’s Alexander O’Neal to 1993’s Love Makes No Sense) sit alongside two exclusive bonus discs offering seven-inch and twelve-inch remixes. The impressive 40-page booklet offers lots of detail around each record and the very thick, sturdy box is a far cry from some of the cheap card slipcases that come with similar album collections. The Rolling Stones‘ celebration of their 2013 London Hyde Park gigs is out this week.

Sweet Summer Sun: Live At Hyde Park has been issued in an enormous number of formats, but putting vinyl to one side, the pick of the bunch was this deluxe edition which combines two CDs of audio with the flexibility of the show on DVD and Blu-ray. Actually, to be totally accurate the US deluxe edition is the best version since it uniquely adds a DVD of the 1969 Hyde Park gig to make the North American edition a five-disc set.

In January 2014 Charly Records will release Here Come The Nice: The Immediate Years Box Set 1967-1969, a lavish Small Faces package that celebrates the band’s 1960s career on Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate Records label.

This set features every worldwide hit single, A & B side plus EPs and rare and previously unreleased material, unheard recording sessions from Olympic, IBC & Trident Studios, outtakes, early mixes, alternate versions and live material.

The so-called ‘supergroup’ featuring guitarist Peter Frampton and Steve Marriott, actually performed four nights at the New York City venue in November of that year.

PICTURES: The Waterboys / “Fisherman’s Box” Deluxe Edition

The Waterboys‘ Fisherman’s Box 7CD+LP deluxe box set has been out for a few weeks and we thought we’d bring you some photos of the package. A cheaper, smaller clamshell variant (6CDs) has been delayed and is now looking like being released on 18 November.

The deluxe box includes a heavyweight vinyl version of the original Fisherman’s Blues album as well as a large format 12″x 12″ booklet, which includes some great photos and Mike Scott’s track-by-track guide to all 121 songs in this set.

Gene / 2CD reissues on the way

olympian_flat — Gene’s first album “Olympian” is one of five to be reissued by Edsel

Edsel Records will reissue all five of the official studio albums by UK Britpop era band Gene in January 2014.

The albums have all been remastered and these reissues are being issued as two-CD sets, with a large selection of bonus tracks added, including BBC radio sessions and unreleased live performances (see full track listing below). These deluxe editions will be presented in the now familiar casebound book packaging.

Fans left disappointed over errors on Roger Taylor “Lot” box

The Who‘s Tommy is reissued as a Super Deluxe Edition and includes a disc of 25 unheard demos, an unreleased ‘live bootleg’ performance of the rock opera and the whole album in 5.1 surround on Blu-ray ‘Pure Audio’ disc.

The Beatles / On Air Live at the BBC, Vol Two (2CD or 3LP)

19 years after the first BBC Beatles set, comes this 63-track follow up. Just for good measure Apple have remastered the first volume as well and you can even pick both up in a limited ‘collection’ slipcase.

The Rolling Stones / Sweet Summer Sun: Hyde Park Live

This celebration of The Rolling Stones‘ 2013 Hyde Park gigs is available in a bewildering array of formats, but the pick of the bunch is this surprisingly well-priced 4-disc deluxe book package.

Herbie Hancock / The Complete Columbia Album Collection 1972-1988

Hot on the heels of the Dylan Complete Album Collection from last week comes a similar set featuring the work of American keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock. This collection contains 34 remastered CDs, with many getting their debut outside of Japan.

The Pogues / “30 Years” box set

A new Pogues box set, 30 Years, will be released by Rhino in December 2013.

This eight CD collection contains the albums Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Peace and Love, Hell’s Ditch, Waiting For Herb, and Pogue Mahone. A previously unissued live album The Pogues With Joe Strummer Live in London (recorded at The Forum in 1991) is also included.

Guest reviewer and pop enthusiast Anthony Kay takes a look at Edsel’s recent Bananarama 2CD+DVD reissues for SuperDeluxeEdition.

It’s impossible for me to avoid slipping into syrupy nostalgia when re-visiting these six albums by Bananarama…

They shaped my childhood. They have been played more times than I care to remember and I know them pretty much inside and out. It was my babysitter who first introduced me to them as a child, way back in the early 1980s. She bought records, read Smash Hits magazine and recorded The Official Gallup UK Top 40 every Sunday evening, so to me she seemed like the coolest person in the world at the time. It should happen that my babysitter would leave behind one of her magazines one night, and upon poring over the pages with great interest, I was to fall instantly in love with a trio of moody looking girls starring back at me; Keren, Sara and Siobhan, AKA Bananarama. I was particularly drawn to Siobhan, or “Shuv” as they nicknamed her, not least of all because my babysitter seemed to be styling herself in her image, and for the next 30 years or so, I would be quite the loyal fan. As you may well know, there have been numerous Bananarama reissues, compilations and pressings since their heyday, most of which regurgitate the same old material, so the news of yet more album reissues was initially met with mixed feelings.

Released only in Japan in 1997, Sting At The Movies (POCM-1553) is a collection of Sting songs that had featured in films over the years.

Actually, it’s not just Sting, because a few Police tracks do make an appearance, including the opener De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da (used in The Last American Virgin) and the fantastic I Burn For You, from the soundtrack to the 1982 Dennis Potter film Brimstone and Treacle.

David Bowie‘s The Next Day was released this week as The Next Day Extra.

This new limited edition box set edition features the standard 14-track album on one CD and comes with a bonus CD containing two remixes and four previously unreleased tracks. This second disc also includes the four bonus tracks issued around the world as part of the original release. A DVD with the videos for Where Are We Now?, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), The Next Day and Valentine’s Day complete the set.

The package is a lift-off lid box with the three discs (dubbed ‘Tracks’, ‘Extra’ and ‘Light’) packaged in card sleeves. You also get three booklets.
