Pulp / His 'N' Hers Vinyl reissue

A double vinyl edition of Pulp‘s breakthrough 1994 release, containing the album-proper on the first record and all 13 bonus tracks from the 2006 deluxe CD on the second vinyl record.

Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, with an eight-page booklet with liner notes from Jarvis Cocker. Out on 10 December (in the UK).

Black Sabbath / The Vinyl Collection 1970-1978

Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler are currently back in the studio recording a new Black Sabbath album. While we wait to see what comes of that, the band are releasing a limited edition vinyl set celebrating the classic 1970s ‘Ozzy-era’. Nine albums on 180-gram heavyweight 12-inch, with full reproductions of the original album packaging and inserts. The original master tapes were remastered at a 24-bit/96kHz resolution for this set, so they quality should be superb. This set is released on 12 December 2012.

Officially released next week, here’s a first-peak at the Blow Monkeys reissues from Cherry Red. Each album has a CD of demos and remixes with B-sides and additional mixes appended to the album on disc 1. Booklets are excellent with an interview with “Dr” Robert Howard and lyrics and discography. Full track listings here.

Given the control and protection of The Beatles ‘brand’ these days by Apple Corps, it’s incredible to think in the UK in the 1970s EMI released Beatles albums on cassette and shuffled the running order of the songs for the convenience of the format.

Jethro Tull / Thick As A Brick 40th Anniversary reissueEMI, Ian Anderson, and Steve Wilson have acknowledged that there are three glitches on the 5.1 surround sound DVD that comes as part of the Jethro Tull’s Thick As A Brick 40th Anniversary Deluxe Reissue. This message was recently left on the Jethro Tull Facebook page:

STOP PRESS: AUDIO GLITICHES ON TAAB 40th Special Edition DVD

We have been alerted to the fact that there are three small audio glitches on the 5.1 streams on the DVD part of the Thick As A Brick Special Edition CD/DVD set. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Any new stock going into stores will be amended & for fans who’ve already purchased the set we will be making available a replacement DVD disc for you. More information to follow shortly. This occurred in the very final stage of mastering prior to manufacture of the commercial run of product and was not noticed until attentive early purchasers spotted the digital errors. With our apologies.

Sex Mix Fix: Frankie replacement CD

ZTT Records yesterday posted a message on their Facebook page, on behalf of Salvo Music, informing purchasers of Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘s Sex Mix compilation, how they can go about getting a replacement ‘disc one’ of this set, that corrects the error with the the first five tracks.

As regular readers will be aware, incorrect masters were used for the tracks relating to the original Welcome To The Pleasuredome cassette single (disc one, tracks 1-5) – the audio used had the left-hand channel mirrored on both right and left sides. Not exactly ‘mono’ but not stereo either. Only tracks 1-5 were affected.

Thankfully, the correct masters have now been found and Salvo are offering purchasers of Sex Mix a replacement disc one. Here are the options to get a replacement physical disc:

  • • SEND your current disc one (no packaging or disc two) to Salvo, Union Square Music Ltd, Unit 1.1, Shepherds Studios, Rockley Road, London W14 0DA, United Kingdom. Provide a return address and they will send you a replacement disc by first class post.
  • • SEND a scanned copy of your receipt (or other proof of purchase) to the address above, and provide a return address and they will send you a replacement disc by first class post.
  • • EMAIL a scanned copy of your receipt (or other proof of purchase) to [email protected]. Obviously, provide a return address and they will send you a replacement disc by first class post.

Initially, it looked like you had to send the disc back, but Salvo have relented on that requirement and said it isn’t necessary. The last option (email) is clearly the easiest method, particularly if you are not based in the UK.

It is likely that stores will continue to stock the ‘wrong’ version of Sex Mix for the near future, until stocks get depleted. For your reference, there will be one or other of two codes on the discs featuring the tracks with one channel repeated on both sides, and they are: *053731 and *055114. The code on the new discs is: *056837. These codes can be found on the underside of the disc in the ring around the centre.

In addition, those who bought digital downloads of the album can now download an updated version at the store from which it was originally purchased.

Liza Minnelli‘s classic Results album from 1989 – co-produced (and largely written) by the Pet Shop Boys – is to be reissued as a heavyweight deluxe vinyl edition, with a bonus disc of remixes on 3 December 2012.

The album has been remastered and comes packaged as a hard back book gatefold vinyl with 16-page booklet.

The Jess Roden Anthology / 6CD box set

Fans of 1970s-era British rock music will be delighted to hear that an expansive, career-spanning box set of music from Jess Roden is being released as a limited edition six-CD special edition, presented in a 12-inch hard back book format.

Roden had a distinguished music career through the late ’60s and 1970s, working with some of the very best musicians of the era (on a variety of different projects and bands)  including Allen Toussaint, Steve Winwood, Robbie Kreiger, John Densmore, and Elliot Randall. This project has been three years in development, and has been something of a labour of love for Neil Storey – founder of Hidden Masters, the music archive curation service that is putting this set out as its debut release.

Neil has worked with Jess himself to compile 94 tracks that chronicle Roden’s entire career – from early days fronting The Alan Bown! through his Island Records’ years and, post-Island via Seven Windows and The Humans.

Over half of the tracks on The Anthology are unreleased – it includes never-before-heard demos, alternative mixes, long-thought-lost masters, completed but discarded tracks, alternate takes as well as a wealth of live recordings. All of the selections have been re-mastered in the UK and US from the original 1⁄4”, 1” or 2” analog tapes – the vast majority of which had never before even been digitised.

Jess Roden himself commented, “Like many musicians who are no longer active, I’ve long wondered just what might have survived within the archives. Me and my bands recorded so much back in the day but one also hears these terrible tales of multi-tracks being thrown out and ending up in skips. Neil’s unearthed stuff I couldn’t recall writing let alone recording… and, I have to say… I’m really rather glad he has.”

Vince Clarke and Martyn Ware have collaborated on two albums in the past – Pretentious (1999) and Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle (2001). Both records experimental, atmospheric, ambient works.
