Paul Weller / 66

Paul Weller will release a new studio album in May called, simply, 66.

The 12 songs on 66 were worked up in Weller’s Black Barn studio over the course of three years with various guest musicians, including Dr Robert, Richard Hawley, Steve Brooks and Max Beesley

There are lyrical contributions from Suggs, Noel Gallagher and Bobby Gillespie (‘Ship Of Fools’, ‘Jumble Queen’ and ‘Soul Wondering’ respectively) and Weller shares production duties on a few tracks with Christophe Vaillant, White Label and Charles Rees. String arrangements are by Hannah Peel.

You can preview ‘Soul Wandering’, above, although apparently “the first proper single” will be ‘Rise Up Singing’ which will be made available on 5 April.

As well as vinyl and CD there’s a 2CD set packaged in deluxe hardcover book format, with four extra tracks on the second disc. As you’d expect there’s various coloured vinyl editions which all come with a 12-page booklet and foldout poster.

66 will be released on 24 May 2024, via Polydor.

Madonna / Celebration 4LP repress

Celebration, Madonna’s 2009 ‘best of’ is having a limited repress, as a 4LP vinyl set, next month.

The collection was originally released as an 18-track single CD, a 36-track 2CD set and there was also a 2xDVD edition with 47 videos. The original 4LP version was issued in America and Europe and featured the same 36 tracks on the double-CD edition (see full tracklisting below).

The vinyl repress is actually being released very quickly, it’s out on 1 March 2024 via Rhino. There’s no indication as how many are being made but it’s described as “limited”. Bat For Lashes / The Dream of Delphi

Natasha Khan’s Bat For Lashes releases a sixth studio album, The Dream of Delphi, in May.

Described as an “ode to motherhood” the record was created in LA during COVID-19 when Khan had given birth to her daughter Delphi.

The record weaves together 10 song poems, “documenting the polarity of navigating both an exterior world what was seemingly turning upside down, whilst also experiencing the profoundly personal and transformational early moments of mothering Delphi, named after the Greek Oracle, the ancient future teller”.

A couple of tracks from this record were debuted live last summer (notably at Christine and the Queens‘ Meltdown Festival at the Southbank – SDE was there!) and we are told the songs have a personal intimacy and a diary-like quality to these compositions from ‘The Midwives Have Left‘  to writing a ‘Letter To My Daughter‘ and ‘Waking Up‘. You can preview the title track, above.

Natasha has worked with Brad Oberhofer, Mary Lattimore and Jack Falby on this album which will be available on 31 May 2024, via Decca. Unlike the previous two Bat For Lashes albums (Lost Girls and The Bride), there is no box set edition of The Dream of Delphi, but some coloured vinyl editions are available.

Portishead / Roseland NYC Live

Portishead’s Roseland NYC Live concert – recorded and filmed at New York’s Roseland Ballroom with a 28-piece orchestra back in 1997 – is being reissued on CD and coloured vinyl.

The album, which was issued originally in 1998, has been “newly remastered” and also expanded; the tracklisting now includes ‘Undenied’ and ‘Numb’ from the concert film, and the full length performance of ‘Western Eyes’, which was played in part over the credits of the film. Also, ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads’ are also now the actual Roseland versions, since previously these were substituted on the album release with recordings from other performances. All five of these tracks will be on CD and vinyl for the first time.

Gatefold 2LP red vinyl with poster and backstage pass

The 2LP edition is pressed on red vinyl, comes in a gatefold sleeve and includes a recreation of the sticky backstage pass used for the concert. The CD edition also comes with this pass and has a 12-page booklet.

These two physical 25th anniversary editions of Roseland NYC Live are released on 26 April 2024, via UMR/Island.

Buzzcocks / Singles: Going Steady coloured vinyl

Domino will release the Buzzcocks’ compilation Singles: Going Steady on coloured vinyl next month.

Originally released in 1979 in the USA on the cusp of the band’s first American tour this collection got an official release in the UK in 1981 (and later CD).

This album was reissued only five years ago on black and indie-exclusive violet vinyl and one presumes this new edition uses the same “restored and re-mastered” audio from the original quarter-inch tapes.

The 45th anniversary orange vinyl edition is a “one-off” pressing and it comes with a numbered sticker and an 8-page booklet. It is limited to 2,000 units.

Singles Going Steady will be released on vinyl on 8 March 2024 via Domino Recordings.

SDEtv takes a look at the recent 50th anniversary reissue of Paul McCartney and Wings’ 1973 album Band on the Run. This is the 2LP deluxe set which comprises the half-speed mastered version of the original album and a vinyl LP of the ‘Underdubbed Mix’.

The 50th anniversary of Band on the Run is out now via MPL/UMe. The 2LP is D2C only, but that is not the case for the 2CD and the standalone half-speed vinyl.

Air’s Moon Safari deluxe tracklisting officially confirmed

After much speculation, the tracklisting of the 2CD+blu-ray 25th anniversary reissue of Air’s 1998 album Moon Safari – specifically the content of CD 2 – has been confirmed by the record label.

The second disc will feature the following tracks:

The first thing to make clear is that it is not the same as the second CD in the previously released 10th anniversary edition, although there is some overlap, namely the three BBC live tracks and the David Whitaker version of ‘Remember’. In terms of the other selections, the Air remix of Neneh Cherry’s Kootchi was previously featured on CD 3 of the Twentyears deluxe edition in 2016, as was the ‘La Femme D’Argent Mix’ of Crustation’s ‘Purple’. The demos appear to be previously unreleased and the Extended Version of ‘Kelly Watch The Stars’ has never been issued on CD before.

The other new info is that David Whitaker’s version of ‘Remember’ is also available in Dolby Atmos on the blu-ray as a bonus track. Also, the hi-res stereo version of the album on the blu-ray, along with that bonus track, is in super high resolution: 192 kHz / 24 bit.

ABBA / Waterloo 50th anniversary reissue

A 50th anniversary celebration of ABBA’s second album Waterloo will be released in April.

The formats follow the familiar pattern of a 2LP 45RPM half-speed mastered vinyl edition, a seven-inch box set with three coloured vinyl singles (‘Honey Honey’, ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Waterloo (Swedish Version)’) and then the same three singles available as individual seven-inch picture discs.

There is an additional physical product this time around, however; a special 10-inch single of ‘Waterloo’ that features alll four versions of the song: Swedish, English, German and French language versions. A picture disc version of the album is also available.

Waterloo will be reissued on 5 April 2024 via UMR/Polydor.

Keane / Hopes and Fears 20

Keane’s 2004 debut Hopes and Fears will be reissued for its 20th anniversary in May.

The album features three UK top 10 singles in ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘Bedshaped’ and was a massive success. It has since gone on to sell more than 2.7m copies in the UK alone.

Founding band member and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley said: “When I think about these songs, I still picture us playing them in little rooms in pubs around the UK. I remember how exciting it was watching the crowds start to grow. Those songs opened the door to another dimension for us; everything that has happened in our lives since then was born out of that moment. It’s an incredible privilege for us that people are still listening after all this time.”

The reissue is available as a 3CD deluxe set which offers B-sides, rarities and a host of unreleased demos and an expanded 2LP coloured vinyl delivers the remastered album on LP 1 and B-sides and rarities on LP 2. There’s also a single ‘galaxy’ coloured vinyl LP which is album-only and a D2C box set that includes the 3CD, a seven-inch single and a whole load of ‘stuff’ (numbered commemorative ticket, Hopes And Fears notebook, postcards etc).

Hopes and Fears 20 will be released on 20 May 2024 via UMR/Island.

David Bowie / Diamond Dogs 50th anniversary vinyl editions

David Bowie’s 1974 album Diamond Dogs will be reissued for its 50th anniversary as two different vinyl pressings.

The conceptual album features the single ‘Rebel Rebel’ and highlights include the ‘Sweet Thing / Candidate / Sweet Thing (Reprise)’ sequence on side one and ‘1984’ and ‘Big Brother’ on side two (Bowie had plans – subsequently scrapped – for a musical based on George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four).

The album was notable for being produced by Bowie, who also handled lead guitar duties. Tony Visconti returned for string arrangements and to help mix the long-player.

Consistent with previous Bowie 50th anniversary celebrations, there’s two vinyl editions: a half-speed mastered black vinyl version and a picture disc LP with poster.

Diamond Dogs will be reissued on 24 May 2024, via Parlophone.

Crowded House / Gravity Stairs

Crowded House will release Gravity Stairs, their new studio album in May.

Produced by the band with Steven Schram, the 11-track long-player follows 2021’s Dreamers are Waiting and is the second with the current line-up of Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, Mitchell Froom and Neil’s sons Elroy and Liam Finn.

The title ‘Gravity Stairs’ was inspired by a heavy stone staircase near where Finn goes on holiday: “It’s a metaphor for getting a little older and becoming aware of your own mortality, your own physicality,” Finn explains. “Things are getting a little harder, and there’s more determination needed to get to the top, but there’s still the same compulsion to climb them.”

The album features the new single ‘Oh Hi’ and the cover art is, of course, a pastiche of The Beatles‘ Revolver. Signed prints come free with a well-priced CD+blue vinyl bundle on the band’s shop.

Gravity Stairs will be released on 31 May 2024, via BMG.

Tina Turner / What’s Love Got To Do With It reissue

What’s Love Got To Do With It was the 1993 Tina Turner soundtrack to the biographical film of the same name and it will be reissued across three physical editions, in April.

The album featured five new songs, including ‘I Don’t Wanna Fight’ (co-written by Lulu), along with old songs such as ‘Private Dancer’, a remixed version of ‘I Might Have Been Queen’ and Turner’s cover of The Trammps’ disco classic ‘Disco Inferno’.

Top of the range is a 4CD+DVD edition of What’s Love Got To Do With It that includes various remixes, edits, instrumental and acapella versions along with Tina’s live show from the Blockbuster Pavillion which is offered across two CDs and on DVD. The packaging looks similar to Turner’s previous deluxe editions and includes a poster and a 24-page booklet.

The 2CD version simply features the first two discs from the box, so you get all 16 of those edits/remixes from CD 2. A single vinyl LP edition is also available.

What’s Love Got To Do With It will be reissued on 26 April 2024 via Rhino.

Pearl Jam / Dark Matter

Pearl Jam have announced Dark Matter their 12th full length studio album.

The album has been produced by Andrew Watt and was recorded in 2023 in Shangri-La Studios in Malibu during a productive three week period.

Dark Matter’s artwork features light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov. The album cover art was crafted using a large self-made kaleidoscope. Each letter visible on the cover was individually captured and handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. 

The 12-track album is available in a variety of formats, including coloured vinyl etc. but notable is a is CD+blu-ray combo that features an immersive Dolby Atmos Mix on the blu-ray element along with hi-res stereo audio (the Atmos Mix is by Nick Rives and Josh Evans).

Dark Matter is released on 19 April 2024 via EMI. This isn’t an SDE-exclusive but it is available via the SDE shop should you choose to support SDE. Use this link or the button below, if you want to do that.

Garbage / Bleed Like Me reissue

Garbage will reissue their 2005 album Bleed Like Me in April.

This was the last album issued before the band’s hiatus and features the UK top 10 hit ‘Why Do You Love Me’. The album has been remastered and is reissued across three formats: 2CD with a selection of B-sides, remixes and demos on the second disc, a 2LP red vinyl edition with 10 B-sides/extra tracks on LP 2 and then a silver single vinyl LP which features just the remastered album.

The 2CD and 2LP sets also features the none-album single ‘Tell Me Where It Hurts’ (from 2007) and its two B-sides, ‘Betcha’ and ‘All That Is Good In This Life’.

This album was never actually issued on vinyl back in 2005, so the single LP and 2LP editions are its official debut on the format.

Status Quo / The Early Years 1966-1969

The Early Years 1966-69 is a new 5CD box set that spotlights the early era of Status Quo.

This collection features songs from the pre-Quo days, as the first iterations of the bands that developed into Status Quo found their feet – and their sound – as well the first two Status Quo albums.

CD 1 starts with remastered mono versions of Quo’s first two albums, Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo and Spare Parts, from 1968 and 1969 respectively, remastered in both mono, while the second disc offers the same selection in remastered stereo.

CD 3 is dubbed ‘Before Quo’ and boasts recordings from The Spectres, who then became Traffic Jam, including A-sides, B-sides and BBC sessions. The fourth disc delivers a generous selection of A-Sides, B-Sides, demos and outtakes before the fifth and final disc completes the story of this era with 18 further tracks from various BBC radio sessions.

The discs are presented in a clamshell box and come with a 40-page booklet with extensive sleevenotes and loads of images of memorabilia from this era, drawn from the band’s own archive.

The Cure / Paris reissue

Following last year’s Show reissue, The Cure will re-release their other 1993 live album, Paris, in March.

The album was recorded in October 1992 at Le Zénith de Paris, during the band’s Wish tour, and was released a year later, only a few weeks after Show, with the latter being the more poppier, commercial offering.

This 30th anniversary reissue of Paris has been newly remastered (by Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios) and it features two previously unreleased live tracks ‘Shake Dog Shake’ (originally the opening track of 1984’s The Top and ‘Hot Hot Hot!!! (from 1987’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me). The band played 26 tracks on each of the three nights in Paris but even in expanded form this reissue offers just 14.

Paris is being reissued on 2LP black vinyl and on CD. It’s out on 22 March 2024 via Polydor/UMC.
