As we will cover in more detail in the forthcoming SDE Reissue Preview of 2024, John Lennon’s 1973 album Mind Games is set to be reissued this year as a 4CD+2xblu-ray box set, featuring 72 audio tracks.
In what is now a familiar pattern, a special standalone book is being issued to mark this occasion and is already available to pre-order.
The 288-page hardcover tome is published by Thames & Hudson (in the UK) and offers the “definitive exploration – told in revelatory detail – of the writing, recording, and release of John Lennon’s celebrated and magical fourth solo album Mind Games, and the era that inspired it”.
Anyone who has bought the books that were issued around the time of Imagine or the Plastic Ono Band reissues will know how great these are. They are expanded versions of the ones that come in the box sets: extra photos, more detail, bigger pages etc. Well worth having! These do tend to fall in price between announcement and release date, but if you choose to shop at Amazon at least you have ‘locked in’ and will benefit from any price-drops due to the pre-order price guarantee.
As with the Plastic Ono Band book, there looks as if there’s only going to be one version of Mind Games. With Imagine there were three editions: standard, deluxe and Yoko Ono-signed deluxe.
This Mind Games book will be released on 4 June 2024 with the box sets expected some time in July.
Amazing price for the box set edition of Neil Young’s 2023 album Barn. The included blu-ray features a film of the band performing the songs live, directed by Daryl Hannah (aka Mrs Neil Young).

This is a gatefold with RED and GREEN vinyl records and TWO excellent booklets (‘Future’ and ‘Past’). A total STEAL at this price!

OMD will re-release Atmospheric & Greatest Hits in March, a live album of their Royal Albert Hall show in March last year.
The show comprised two sets: the atmospheric (Stanlow, Our System, Statues, Ghost Star) along with some rarities, followed by a second set which was a celebration of their hit singles spanning 40 years.
The 2CD edition is neat by having each set on one disc, whereas the 3LP orange vinyl edition is slightly messier by having three sides of vinyl for each set. The vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve with a booklet.
Atmospheric & Greatest Hits will be released on 29 March 2024.

Religion, Revolution & Railways is a forthcoming archival 7CD box set featuring ‘The Complete Recordings’ of The Dream Academy.
The Dream Academy were a British band that featured singer/guitarist and songwriter Nick Laird-Clowes, multi-instrumentalist Kate St. John, and keyboardist/songwriter Gilbert Gabriel. In I985 the group achieved worldwide success following the release of their first single ‘Life In A Northern Town’ which saw their subsequent debut album going into the American Top 20.
They released two further studio albums and had a close musical association with David Gilmour who co-produced two of those records. Hugh Padgham worked on the second album (Rememberance Days) although Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut (who had been working on Fleetwood Mac’sTango in the Night) helped to produce the cover of the Korgis’ ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime’ that featured on that album. The group disbanded in 1990.
The new box set features their three official albums and includes all official B-sides and remixes along with a few unreleased tracks. The band’s Nick Laird-Clowes has been involved both with overseeing the remastering (by Tony Dixon of Masterpiece Masters) and in terms of searching the Warner Bros archives to find rarities and unreleased tracks. Nick has also written comprehensive sleeve notes for the set and selected photographic material for the booklet.
Religion, Revolution & Railways will be released on 23 February 2024 via Cherry Red Records.
For the last few months we have been trialling having local currencies on the SDE shop to see if it’s something that adds value to our international audience and affords them a better shopping experience.
The general idea is that you can shop in USD, EUR, CAD, etc. which should make life easier for international shoppers inasmuch as they don’t have to do thumbnail currencies conversions in their head when looking at products that are all priced in GBP (UK Pound Sterling). Another aim was to remove currency conversion fees applied by your international card providers when buying a products in a currency that is not the same as your local currency and avoiding your payment providers maybe blocking a transaction because the ‘foreign’ currency purchase looks suspicious.
Shortly after we introduced this, in October 2023, we had some informal feedback from some of you, but the point of this post is to collect data properly and give you the chance to have your say. So below is a poll that we’d love you to complete if you do not live in the UK and have brought a product from on the SDE shop. As we approach Christmas Day I’d like to say thank you for your company in 2023. It has been a very interesting year, even if it was perhaps not a classic in terms of album reissues and box sets.
To be honest, there have been some trends that I have not particularly enjoyed, namely the concept of producing multiple coloured vinyl editions of new albums in order to increase sales figures. Labels know that some fans will have deep enough pockets and not be able to resist collecting them and it has started happening with CDs as well, with artists like Taylor Swift offering different artwork editions of one album.
The other trend I have not enjoyed, which really does ride roughshod over loyal fans, is the special ‘digital deluxe edition‘ which normally gets offered on the Monday after release date. Physical editions get shipped the week before and suddenly a digital deluxe appears with exclusive bonus tracks that could have been included on the vinyl or CD versions (that fans have pre-ordered months before) but have been ‘saved’ for digital marketing purposes. These digital deluxe editions are priced competitively, the idea being that fans who’ve ordered the physical sets will also order the digital deluxe to get the otherwise unavailable bonus audio. The album therefore enjoys one more sale and this helps the release achieve a higher ‘week one’ chart position, in the UK.
On a more positive note I have enjoyed bringing you more SDE exclusives this year than on any other previous 12 month period. We announced 11 titles in the SDE Surround Series of blu-ray audios in 2023 compared to seven last year and I hope to at least match that number in 2024. To everyone who has read a post on SDE, left a comment, ordered something from the SDE shop, engaged with SDE on social media or watched a video or subscribed to our YouTube channel – thank you! SDE has always been about a community of likeminded people coming together and sharing and exchanging views in a friendly and respectful way. This site has grown in terms of readership and influence over time, but it hasn’t fundamentally changed that much, which I’m quite pleased about. It’s not perfect, but it is still totally independent, not ruined by a proliferation of advertising and has retained its focus. Best of all, it’s still here after all this time! Long may it continue…

SDEtv explores the various physical formats (all vinyl) that comprise the 40th anniversary reissue campaign for ABBA’s 1981 album, The Visitors.
The 40th anniversary editions of The Visitors are out now, via UMR/Polydor. The seven-inch box set is only available via ABBA/Universal channels such as The Sound of Vinyl.
A new 4CD set compiling Kim Wilde’s output for RAK Records will be released in February.
Love Blonde: The RAK Years features three studio albums along with a bonus CD of remixes. Those records are Kim Wilde (1981), Select (1982) and Catch as Catch Can (1983), each remastered and expanded with bonus tracks, plus a disc of ‘Special Disco Mixes’.
The bonus tracks don’t include everything previously issued on individual album releases. For example there was a 2CD+DVD deluxe of Kim Wilde in 2020 and the four bonus audio tracks (not including the disc of remixes) were ‘Shane’, ‘Boys’, ‘Water on Glass 7″ Version’ and ‘Tuning In Tuning On 7″ Version’. The two seven-inch versions are missing here, but you do get ‘He Will Be There’. Similarly, ‘Rain On’ is a new bonus track on Catch As Catch Can, but the original 7″ and 12″ Versions of ‘Love Blonde’ and the Nile Rodgers and instrumental mixes of ‘Dancing in the Dark’ are not included. There are new remixes of both songs on CD 4, however.
This final disc includes 10 remixes, none of which were issued at the time and six of which are brand new to this box set including ‘Water On Glass [Project K Soundtrack]’ and ‘House Of Salome [Luke Mornay Mix Of The Seven Veils]’.
The CDs come in a lift-off lid box with each album in this package is housed in a gatefold sleeve with original vinyl artwork. It comes with a 48-page booklet with new sleeve notes written by Kim Wilde expert Marcel Rijs.
Love Blonde: The RAK Years will be released on 1 March 2024 (was 23 February).

A new Rolling Stones seven-inch box set will be released in February next year. 7″ Singles 1966-1971 follows up the 1963-1966 collection from last year (watch the SDEtv unboxing video) and contains 18 vinyl singles and extended play records as originally released by Decca, London Records and ABKCO Records.
This features original packaging, original mono and stereo single mixes and all the hits from this classic era including five number ones. Tracks include ‘Paint It Black’, ‘Have You Seen Your Mother Baby Standing In The Shadow?’, ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’, ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘Street Fighting Man’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, ‘Brown Sugar’, and many other classics.

It also features songs that while recorded between ’66 and ’71 where sometimes issued as singles after that, an example being ‘I Don’t Know Why’, which wasn’t issued until 1975 to promote the Stones rarities album Metamorphosis. A bit more dubiously, the Neptunes and Fat Boy Slim remixes of ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ (issued on SACD in 2003) now get their own seven-inch, although at least the original version is still on disc 17.
All the tracks in this box were remastered by Bob Ludwig, and the discs are manufactured by Third Man Pressing in Detroit. The set also comes with a 32-page book containing extensive liner notes by Nigel Williamson.

40 years ago this very week, one of the most popular albums of the 1980s, Paul Young’s solo debut No Parlez, was number two in the UK album charts while its fourth single, a reissued ‘Love of the Common People’, occupied the same position in the UK singles charts. Released in July 83, the album became a commercial phenomenon, taking up residence in the top 10 where it remained for an astonishing 32 consecutive weeks (baring one seven day spell at #11) until March 1984. During that time, other legendary 80s albums came and went, including Culture Club’sColour by Numbers, Duran Duran’sSeven and the Ragged Tiger and Lionel Richie’sCan’t Slow Down, but No Parlez endured, reaching number one on four separate occasions for a total of five weeks at the summit. In the end, it spent over two years in the top 100!
Now, four decades on, this titan of 80s pop is getting a literal super deluxe treatment with an SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio edition that will surely be the last word on No Parlez, with no fewer than EIGHT different audio mixes, including a brand new immersive Dolby Atmos Mix, a 5.1 mix, a new stereo mix and much more.
Additionally, a new 2CD edition offers the original first UK vinyl pressing on CD for the very first time, along with B-sides and remixes on CD 2. As well as being available in the classic sleeve, an SDE-exclusive edition of the 2CD set comes packaged in the original USA artwork, in deluxe seven-inch packaging!
No Parlez was produced by Laurie Latham (he produced Ian Dury’s 1977 album New Boots and Panties!!) and features the UK number one, ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)’, ‘Come Back And Stay’, ‘Iron Out The Rough Spots’ and the aforementioned ‘Love of the Common People’.
Latham’s signature layered production style – working with a group of very creative musicians (including bassist Pino Palladino, who quickly became one of the most in demand sessions players of the era) and the idiosyncratic backing singers Kim Lesley and Maz Roberts (affectionately nicknamed ‘The Fabulous Weathy Tarts’) – lends itself perfectly to immersive audio, wonderfully showcasing Paul Young’s exceptional voice.
All the original 24-track, two-inch analogue tapes were located, heat-treated (‘baked’) and captured to digital in startling 192 kHz/24-bit clarity. The process sees the album meticulously rebuilt in stereo, with painstaking attention to detail, before the immersive audio Atmos and 5.1 mixes are created. This is detailed and time-consuming work and there is nothing automated about it! Producer and artist David Kosten has undertaken this work (he created the Atmos Mix for Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells) and it’s fair to say that No Parlez will never sound better!
Interestingly, one multi-track tape had been missing for 15 years, but with some SDE sleuthing we located it, transferred it and returned it safely to the Sony archive. Phew!
I have personally worked on three major Paul Young reissue projects over the last decade (Remixes and Rarities, Tomb of Memories: The CBS Years 1982-1993 and The CBS Singles Collection 1982-1994 box set) and in that time Paul has become something of a friend to SDE. So it will come as no surprise to read that this 40th anniversary reissue of what few would argue is his defining work, comes with Paul’s full approval and endorsement.

For the avoidance of doubt, the audio is the same on both 2CD sets, only the design (UK sleeve v US sleeve) is different. The SDE-exclusive is limited to 1000 units worldwide.

Suede’s 2013 ‘comeback’ album Bloodsports is being reissued early next year for its 10th anniversary.
After reformingfor a charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust in 2010, Suede decided to ‘stay together’ and record a new album.
Bloodsports was recorded with Ed Buller, producer of the band’s first three albums and issued in March 2013. it features the singles “It Starts And Ends with You”, “Hit Me” and “For The Strangers”.
The 2CD edition in deluxe seven-inch packaging
There’s two physical editions for this anniversary release. The first is a 2CD set in deluxe seven-inch packaging (the same as for the debut album reissue earlier this year). The attraction with this particular package is all eight non-album tracks collected for the first time on one CD.
Fans may recall that the bonus track situation when this album first came out was a mess, with iTunes bonus tracks via a ‘digital deluxe’, Japan-only bonus tracks, deluxe box sets without promised bonus tracks, and so on. The first time they were all issued on CD was via the now long out-of-print CD singles box set from 2014, but of course for that set they were spread across the four CD singles. This new 2CD brings them all together.
The vinyl version is half-speed mastered and comes in a gatefold sleeve with OBI-strip, four-page insert with lyrics/credits and a poly-lined inner.
Bloodsports will be reissued on 23 February 2024, via Demon Music.
Actually, so good was 1982 that this new 4CD is, in fact, only ‘Part One’. The 48 tracks included are extended, full-length or remixed versions of pop hits of the day, reflecting the move from disco to synth-pop/new wave.
The first disc includes the likes of Duran Duran (‘Rio (Part II)’), Spandau Ballet (‘Instinction (Remix)’), Visage (‘The Damned Don’t Cry (Dance Mix)’), The Human League (‘Mirror Man (Extended Version)’), Japan (‘Life In Tokyo (1982 12″ Extended Remix)’), Gary Numan (‘Music For Chameleons (Extended Version)’) and Tears For Fears (‘Pale Shelter (Long Version)’).
CD 2 kicks off with Carly Simon and the brilliant Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards written and produced hit ‘Why’, before moving on to Rockers Revenge feat. Donnie Calvin with ‘Walking On Sunshine’, and P-Funk from George Clinton with ‘Loopzilla’. Culture Club, Bananarama, The Belle Stars and Bucks Fizz also feature.
CD3 has a disco/funk/soul vibe with hits from Shalamar (‘A Night To Remember’), The Boys Town Gang (‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’), Patrick Cowley feat. Sylvester (the extended remix of ‘Do You Wanna Funk’) and Imagination’s ‘Just An Illusion’ in its full 12-inch glory. Spandau Ballet, Daryl Hall & John Oates and Haircut 100 appear later on.
The final disc is the ‘indie’ selections with classic 12-inches from New Order, Associates, Siouxsie And The Banshees and The Cure. Simple Minds are represented with the German 12” Remix of ‘New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)’ and A Flock Of Seagulls’ ‘Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)’ also features. The set finishes with Thomas Dolby and Soft Cell.

Paul McCartney has announced a third anniversary vinyl reissue of his 2020 album, McCartney III.
The ‘3×3 Edition’ constitutes three tri-colour vinyl pressings that will be allocated randomly to fans who place an order. Each includes a “print handwritten by Paul”, new cover art and an Ed Ruscha sketch poster (Ed’s the guy that designed the cover to ‘Now and Then’).
These records are only available D2C (Direct-to-Consumer via Paul/Universal stores) and you are only allowed to order two copies per customer. On top of that there’s no guarantee you will receive two different variants (i.e. you may get the same vinyl twice). All this means it’s impossible to get all three variants, without getting creative.
At the time of release (December 2020), McCartney III was issued in at least nine different vinyl pressings (includes a ‘333 Edition’ limited to 333 units via Third Man Records). Seven months later the remix-type album McCartney IIIImagined was released, also with multiple vinyl variations. Therefore, it’s very surprising that McCartney has chosen to do this and even that he wants to do this. Give it a rest, why don’t you?
He’s just announced a 50th anniversary reissue of Band on the Run, the third time he’s reissued that particular album in the last 13 years. Paul seems wilfully determined to not address the elephant in the room which is that it has been almost three and a half years since his last Archive Collection Reissue. Fans are waiting for Wings’ London Town and Back to the Egg albums to be properly reissued for the first time ever. He’d do well to concentrate on that rather than giving McCartney III a frankly unwelcome third outing, in 36 months!

It’s already sitting pretty at the top of the UK singles chart but this week Wham!’s 1984 single ‘Last Christmas’ is issued on coloured vinyl seven-inch and as a CD single.
Peter Gabriel’s new album i/o has entered the UK album chart at number one this week! It’s his first UK number one since So back in 1986 and his third in total (Peter Gabriel 3 aka ‘Melt’ also hit the top spot in 1980).
i/o sold a total of 15,647 units made up of 11,178 CDs (that includes the 2CD+blu-ray edition) along with 2320 vinyl albums, 1420 digital downloads and 737 sales equivalent streams. Despite their being two different vinyl editions (Bright-Side and Dark-Side mixes) for chart purposes Realworld would have made sure that these were accepted at the same album and didn’t count separately. A good thing too, because less than 700 sales separated Gabriel from South Korean K-pop boy band Ateez who for most of the week looked like they’d deny PG a number one with their album World EP: Fin, but in the end they fell short with 14,972 sales.
Peter Gabriel almost holds one of those now fashionable ‘longest gap between…’ records. With 37 years between number one studio albums, only ABBA can beat that with the 40 years between The Visitors (1981) and Voyage (2021).
In other album news, Soft Cell’sNon-Stop Erotic Cabaret is a re-entry at number 31, its first chart appearance in the chart for over 40 years. Its number nine in the physical album charts, 13 places ahead of Trevor Horn’sEchoes – Ancient and Modern (which stalled at lowly 81 on the ‘proper’ album chart).
In other chart news, having taken over 36 years to finally get to number one on the UK singles chart, Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ can’t stop getting to the top! Having finally reached the summit in 2021 the song repeated the feat in 2022 and again at the very beginning of this year. So this is now the fourth time! Next week Sony are releasing the festive favourite on CD single and green vinyl seven-inch but they might be wondering if they should have bothered – it doesn’t seem necessary. That said, with no Ladbaby this year (small mercies) they’ll be hoping for ‘Last Christmas’ to be number one on Christmas Day itself (something that hasn’t happened yet) and I could easily see ‘Last Christmas’ dropping a place or two only to reclaim the top spot again. We shall see…
