Sade / The Ultimate Collection / 2CD+DVD Deluxe Edition / Review

Sade The Ultimate Collection 2CD+DVD Front Cover

There is something about the 1980s. Artists who were very successful in that decade often became victims of their own success and ended up trapped forever with an image they might have not wanted in the first place.

Duran Duran are a good example. Once the ’80s were over the public at large were – with the exception of 1993’s ‘Wedding Album’ – just not interested. Liberty, Medazzaland, Pop Trash – all albums by the group that died a lonely death while Grunge, Britpop and the Spice Girls – in that order – dominated the pop landscape.

The USA in particular, during the 1980s, was a land of false hope for many artists from all over the world. Bands looking for a long, steady relationship with the US record-buying public, ended up with a one-night-stand. A-ha, Pet Shop Boys, Paul Young, Crowded House and even Kylie Minogue all graced the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 once or twice (normally very early in their careers) and then quickly returned to relative obscurity, the American dream quickly turning into a bit of a nightmare.

Special Feature / Paul McCartney: Raider of the Lost Archive

The received wisdom is that artists don’t make money on record sales anymore, touring is where the money is. What often gets forgotten is that to put on a successful tour that will attract the numbers needed to earn mega-bucks, you need a decent back catalogue with which to draw in the public. Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Metallica, The Eagles, Roger Waters and Sir Paul himself, were all amongst the top ten music tour earners in 2010. All those artists have had the longevity and the success required to deliver two hours of hits and/or career highlights with which to entertain their fans. It’s safe to say that only the minority would be in attendance to hear tracks off the ‘new album’.

ABBA / Super Trouper deluxe edition reviewed

As we approach the 40th anniversary of ABBA, they seem in danger of being known for two things above all else – ABBA Gold and Mamma Mia! (the musical). Both have come to totally dominate the ABBA landscape, and being ‘hits’ collections, they reinforce the notion that ABBA were only a singles band.

A-ha / Ending on a High Note-The Final Concert / 2CD+DVD Deluxe

a-ha / Ending on a High Note / 2CD+DVD Deluxe Edition Review

“Let’s stay friends forever…”

So a-ha bid farewell to the fickle world of pop. The bonds which tied them for so many years have loosened and Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Pål Waaktaar-Savoy are going their own separate ways. To commemorate the occasion they have released their very last concert from 4th December 2010 at the Olso Spektrum, in their home town of Norway, on CD, 2CD+DVD and Blu-ray. Full details on configurations can be found here.

EXCLUSIVE: Ian Peel, ZTT curator and archivist talks to Superdeluxeedition

Into Battle Sticker
The sticker incorrectly claims 18 previously unreleased tracks

Ian Peel, the architect and archivist behind much of the recent output from ZTT records, has been in touch to respond to our criticism regarding Into Battle with the Art of Noise.

In our review of April 19 we claimed that the ’18 previously unreleased tracks’ sticker was simply untrue since many of these tracks appeared on the And What Have You Done With My Body, God? Box Set from 2008. Here’s what Ian  had to say…

Duran Duran / All You Need Is Now / Review

Duran Duran All You Need Is Now

In 1987 Elvis Costello persuaded Paul McCartney to get out  his old Hoffner ‘violin’ bass out for the first time in decades, and encouraged him to use it for recordings that would end up on 1989’s Flowers in the Dirt. Elvis thought this would channel some Beatle vibes into the recordings and indeed, one of the resulting tracks, My Brave Face – which he co-wrote with McCartney – does have a very Beatles-y feel to it.

In the same way producer Mark Ronson has encouraged Duran Duran to ‘sound like Duran Duran’ again while working with them on their new album All You Need Is Now. They’ve dusted down their old analogue synths and dug deep into the Duran Duran Sample Library™ to produce a record that spends much time flirting with their past.

Into Battle with the Art of Noise / Review

Into Battle with the Art of NoiseFor a while back in the early ’80s Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, Gary Langan and J.J. Jeczalik were just another group of musicians messing around with ideas in the studio. When journalist and copywriter Paul Morley (working with their record company ZTT at the time) presented an eight page manifesto defining the band and their guiding principles, The Art of Noise was born.

Howard Jones / The 12″ Album & Action Replay Box Set / Review

Howard Jones 12" Album / Action Replay Box Set
Howard Jones has remastered and reissued his 1984 remix album The 12″ Album and the 1986 US-only mini-LP Action Replay. Available from early April 2011 on his own Dtox label, the two CDs are can be purchased individually or together as a strictly limited edition numbered box set which comes with an additional bonus CD of extended remixes.

The 12″ Album has been out-of-print for years and the hard-to-find original CD commands sizeable prices on ebay. Action Replay was only ever issued on vinyl and cassette making this it’s CD debut 25 years after the original release.

George Michael / Faith / 2CD+DVD

It seems almost from the start of his career with Wham!, George Michael was planning for the day he would “go solo”.

Of course, he didn’t bother waiting until Wham! split – Careless Whisper was a George Michael solo single, which also appeared as a Wham! track on their second album, Make It Big (in the US the song was credited to Wham! featuring George Michael).

By the time his second solo single, A Different Corner, was released in early 1986, Wham! had already announced that they would break-up that summer, leaving George a year to write and record his first solo album.

Abba / Super Trouper Deluxe Edition / Coming Soon

Abba Super Trouper Deluxe Edition

Abba continue with their ongoing 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition campaign, with Super Trouper which is issued on 9th May 2011 as a CD+DVD set.

The album has been newly remastered (from the original master tapes) for this release and includes five bonus audio tracks. Of particular interest to fans is a stereo mix of the original, full length version of On And On And On, previously only available in mono.

The DVD looks interesting with lots of TV appearances, videos synced to remastered audio, and a new featurette called Somewhere In The Crowd There’s You – On Location With ABBA which contains archive video footage of the album cover shoot.

Coming Soon: Suede 2CD+DVD / Deluxe Editions for all 5 albums / Full details

Exciting news for Suede fans. This summer, every album is being re-issued as a remastered Deluxe 2CD+DVD edition through Edsel Records.

Their 1993 debut album Suede kicks things off on 30th May, followed by the acclaimed Dog Man Star (6th June), Coming Up (13th June), Head Music (20th June) with A New Morning the series finishing things off on 27th June.

Looking at the track listings (below) it is clear much thought has gone into these reissues. Even if you have religiously purchased every CD single and 7″ vinyl, there is plenty of material you will not have heard before ranging from home demos, outtakes, unedited versions of album tracks and newly discovered concert footage.

The DVDs for each release have promo videos and lots of live footage. Dog Man Star looks very exciting in this respect, because it includes footage of the band at the Casino de Paris, playing Dog Man Star songs before the album recording sessions. Yes, with Bernard Butler!

Look out for in-depth reviews nearer the time, but please click below to reveal full details and tracklisting for each album.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood / Welcome to the Pleasuredome

If 1984 was the most ‘eighties’ year of that decade, then Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH or Frankie) were the most ‘eighties’ of bands. The year and band collided dramatically, resulting in an explosion of 12inch vinyl, remixes, cassette singles and 15 weeks at number one in the UK chart.

Resistance was futile – they would get you in the end. No teenager was without a Frankie 12inch come December 1984 and it’s hard to convey the fun, danger and excitement of FGTH in the cold light of 2011. Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford with Peter Gill, Mark O’Toole and Brian Nash (“The Lads”) created something visceral, real and far removed from the sanitised pop that dominates the charts today.

Relax and Two Tribes have secured their place in pop history. Instantly recognisable, and instantly capable of transporting any listener a few years either side of forty back to the heady days of 1984, Top of the Pops and Our Price record shops.
