In September 1977 the Sex Pistols released their only album with Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) on vocals. It was preceded by three singles and a career’s worth of notoriety. The Pistols had become front page news overnight when they appeared on the Today programme in December 1976, and had sworn at host Bill Grundy after he drunkenly goaded them on air.

Last week saw the release of a number of the ever-popular ‘original album’ box sets. For the uninitiated, these are boxes which collect together full album releases by one artist – normally five albums per box, but sometimes less.
These sets are aggressively priced (between £10-15), so the packaging is cheap and cheerful, rather than luxurious and indulgent. Sony collect these under the ‘Original Album Classics’ banner, while Warner Music, for example, opt for ‘Original Album Series’. You get the idea. Both of these labels package the albums in the same way, using simple card sleeves, that normally replicate the original vinyl design. There are no booklets and no credits, other than what might appear on the album sleeve itself (assuming it’s readable).

Rhino will release Chicago: The Studio Albums ’69-’78, a new ten-disc box set, on 29 October. Like the forthcoming Joni Mitchell set (with an almost identical time-span) this will come in the form of a clamshell box with the CDs housed in the familiar card sleeve mini-jackets.

Donald Fagen will release his first album of new material for six and a half years on 15 October 2012 (16th in the US).
Sunken Condos sees the Steely Dan co-founder work with producer Michael Leonhart, and contains nine new tracks. The album will be released on CD and as 180g double vinyl set.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation has announced the release of a box set, Amy Winehouse at the BBC which will feature the late soul singer’s earliest BBC Radio sessions, first-ever TV performances, candid interviews, and live versions of her songs from the albums Frank and Back To Black.
The set is spread over three DVDs and one CD and includes a video of her performance at Porchester Hall, London, recorded in 2007 as well as a documentary, Amy Winehouse: The Day She Came To Dingle, which recently aired in the UK on BBC Four.
Amy Winehouse at the BBC comes in book-style packaging with illustrated booklet featuring rare photographs and extensive sleeve notes. It is set for release on 12 Nov (Amazon incorrectly show 15 Oct) with record royalties going to The Amy Winehouse foundation.

Neil Young will release a second album in less than a year on 30 October 2012.
A double-CD and triple-vinyl, Psychedelic Pill was recorded with Crazy Horse right after Americana (released in June). Like that album, videos have been made for each of the songs on Psychedelic Pill release and a high resolution 24/192 hi-res version of the album will be released on Blu-ray and will include all the videos. The iTunes downloads will also be accompanied by videos.

Led Zeppelin‘s December 2007 tribute concert to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun – now known as Celebration Day – will be released on 19 November 2012 across a large number of formats including an AUDIO ONLY Blu-ray version featuring high-resolution 48Khz/ 24 bit PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.
In addition there will be two deluxe editions, a 2CD+DVD set and a 2CD+Blu-ray+DVD package. Both will feature audio and video of the concert, plus bonus material, including footage of the full dress rehearsal at Shepperton Studios.
There will also be a standard 2CD+DVD and a 2CD+Blu-ray release which omit the video bonus material on the deluxe editions, as well as a music-only 2CD edition.
On December 10th will come a 3LP release on 180g heavyweight vinyl.

As mentioned last month, Michael Jackson‘s Bad 25 reissue is available at Target stores in North America in a special three-disc edition. The standard 2CD set comes with an exclusive bonus DVD of all the promo videos from Bad.
Having got our hands on a copy, we can reveal a few more details. The DVD itself is an NTSC all region disc and comes in a card sleeve glued to the back of the standard 2CD package (thankfully easy to remove without any damage).
The videos (listed below) are all the short versions with the exception of The Way You Make Me Feel (9.20) and Speed Demon (9.59). Sound is stereo, with no surround option.
Walmart are also doing their own exclusive, with a T-shirt rather than the bonus DVD.

Michael Jackson‘s Bad album is 25 years old. Rather like unwanted remixes (Blue Monday ’88) or possibly a movie ‘franchise’ gone out of control, marketing bods and record labels have now taken to appending the age, in years, to the album name.
So Bad is now “Bad 25”. Peter Gabriel‘s So reissue is being referred to as “So 25” (technically incorrect, it’s actually “So 26”). This doesn’t work for all albums. Should George Harrison’s hit album from 1987 squeeze onto the schedules before Christmas, we can look forward to “Cloud Nine 25” which sounds something akin to a radio breakfast show, weather update and time check.

The Kinks Live at the BBC is a six disc box set released by Sanctuary/Universal in August. The set is collated from all of the BBC-owned Kinks recordings that still exist in the archive – in total 131 tracks. Also included is a DVD with appearances on Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, as well as concerts from throughout the band’s career. This limited edition set appears to have sold out as it is already commanding high prices on amazon.

Queen will release a concert film Hungarian Rhapsody – Live In Budapest on 5 November.
Originally filmed in 1986 as part of the Magic Tour, Hungarian Rhapsody has been re-mastered in high definition and presented in 5.1 surround sound. There are a multitude of configurations, including standalone DVD and standalone Blu-ray, as well as a 2CD/DVD Deluxe Edition and a 2CD/Blu-ray Deluxe Edition.
