Review: Todd Rundgren / At the BBC 1972-1982: 4-disc box set

toddrungren

Brent Keefe reviews the new Rundgren box set At the BBC 1972-1982.

When Esoteric announced they would be plundering the Todd Rundgren archive, promising some unreleased nuggets from the vaults, there was much excitement amongst Rundgren fans. However, the initial offerings, the reissue of the previously available (in Japan) and only marginally interesting Disco Jets, along with the Live At The Electric Ballroom 1978 show (which sounds like the compressed, pre-mixed radio broadcast that it is) were welcome, but somewhat disappointing. Only the excellent Live At The Warfield 1990 offset the disappointment.

Review: Wham! / The Final: Japanese K2HD mastered edition

Japan_wham

As reported a few months back, amongst some recent releases in Japan comes this K2HD remastering of Wham!’s classic 1986 compilation The Final.

Although the album was effectively a greatest hits (released in May ’86 after just two studio long-players Fantastic and Make It Big) The Final has over the years been accorded almost a de facto ‘proper album’ status thanks to the inclusion of the duo’s last three singles; Last Christmas (late ’84), I’m Your Man (September ’85) and The Edge of Heaven (June 1986). None of those tracks had been on an official Wham! studio album at that point and the addition of new tracks Battlestations (the clearest indication which direction George would move with Faith) and Was (Not Was) cover Where Did Your Heart Go? only increased the appeal.

Review: KISS / Love Gun deluxe

Graeme Piper reviews the Love Gun two-CD deluxe reissue from Kiss.

US clown white make-up icons, Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees and larger than life rock titans, KISS, are big business these days. Hitting their 40th Anniversary this year, playing in excess of 2,000 live shows and selling over 100m albums worldwide, they are currently ripping Las Vegas a new one in a month long residency at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino with their trademark bombastic live show. Not too shabby by any stretch of the studded codpiece.

Continuing to celebrate in style, Universal Music have just issued a Deluxe Edition of their multi-platinum album Love Gun. Originally released in 1977 when, after three years solid touring and recording, KISS had made themselves into larger than life superheroes and become the biggest rock band in America.
