This John Martyn Island Years box set contains 17 CDs featuring the 12 key studio albums (recorded for Island between 1967 and 1987) with previously unreleased mixes, outtakes, unheard songs and two complete, previously unreleased live solo concerts from 1972 and 1977 and the complete demos for The Apprentice, the last album Martyn delivered to Island. Add to that a DVD with loads of TV performances, a large hardback book and you have an amazing set.

#RSD14 / Art of Noise: Live at the End of a Century picture disc

Never got around to showing this video last week before Record Store Day… so belatedly, here is what the Art Of Noise Live at the End of a Century 12-inch picture disc looks like. Featured on the record are three live tracks from the 1999 Coachella Festival (namely Out of this World, Born On A Sunday and Moments in Love). For the purposes of this video we have used a small segment of the Radio One Moments in Love live session (as featured on the Who’s Afraid deluxe from 2011).

Perhaps surprisingly, you can buy this picture disc relatively cheaply from Amazon.

In May, Universal Music will release Extended 80s a three-CD compilation of classic extended remixes from pop’s classic era.

The selection is notable for including a few relative rarities, even if they are not as “sought after” as the blurb describes. John “Tokes” Potoker’s superb ‘Dance Mix’ of Peter Gabriel‘s Sledgehammer (famously absent from the So deluxe box) gets its first proper mainstream CD reissue and the ‘US Dub Mix’ of Tears For Fears‘ Shout is not commonly used on remix compilations.

WORLD PREMIERE: Listen to the full 10-minute Blank & Jones so80s Reconstruction version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘s 1986 single Rage Hard.

The track is one of 13 brand new remixes that have been created only using audio from the original ZTT Records‘ master tapes and compiled on the forthcoming two-CD release so80s presents ZTT which is out on Monday 28 April (full track listing here).

“Purple Rain” deluxe due as Prince and Warners sign new agreement

Prince will release a remastered deluxe edition of his 1984 album Purple Rain in 2014 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the breakthrough album.

Warner Bros. Records revealed the reissue plans today when they announced a new agreement with the star which will, to quote the press release, “see the release of long-awaited, previously unheard material, while giving the artist ownership of the master recordings of his classic, global hits.”
