Universal prep Kim Wilde reissue

Kim Wilde / Close reissue being prepped by Universal
‘Close’ contains three UK top 10 hit singles

Universal Music have chosen not to licence out Kim Wilde‘s 1988 album Close and are planning to put out a 25th anniversary deluxe reissue at some point this year.

Cherry Red Records hoped to release this album on their Cherry Pop imprint as a 2CD deluxe edition – as they had done for Wilde’s first five albums released in the 1980s –  but Universal apparently see enough appeal for Close to keep it for themselves. The album contains four top 40 UK hit singles, three of which (You Came, Never Trust A Stranger, Four Letter Word) reached the top 10. You Came also broke into the US top 50.

Kim Wilde tweeted the following last month: “Great to hear various Close re-mixes for Mey Mr Heartache, You Came, Never trust a strange, Four Letter Word, Love In A Natural Way” so it is clear she is involved in the process.

If Universal are feeling lazy they can just re-use the track listing submitted by Cherry Red two years ago (see below). The reissue seems unlikely to be anything other than a two-CD deluxe edition, after all, and what was suggested by Cherry Red looks comprehensive enough.

How a Close deluxe edition might look:
Below is the track listing that Cherry Red were hoping to release. Time will tell if this becomes the final track listing of the Universal release.

Breathe / All That Jazz 2CD deluxe

Breathe / All That Jazz deluxe edition

British pop band Breathe‘s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it career is all thanks to the success of the singles from their 1988 debut All That Jazz.

Hands To Heaven almost went to number one in the US (peaking at number two), and the follow-up single How Can I Fall? also went top five Stateside. A further US top ten hit from the album seemed to suggest a solid foundation for a successful career, but unfortunately for the band, sales of their second album Peace Of Mind (1990) were poor and they split soon after.

Cherry Pop are reissuing their debut as a 2CD deluxe edition, adding a selection of seven inch remixes, B-sides and extended versions. The track count is actually tripled to a generous 33 in total, and the reissue is due for release on 25 February 2013.

Julia Fordham / Porcelain and Swept deluxe editions on the way

Julian Fordham / Porcelain and Swept Deluxe Reissues

Julia Fordham‘s second album, 1989’s Porcelain, and its follow-up Swept, from 1991, are both to be reissued by Cherry Red Records as two-CD deluxe editions in May 2013.

The British singer-songwriter is probably best-known for her 1988 UK single Happy Ever After, a memorable, but modest hit, taken from her self-titled debut (planned for reissue later in 2013).

Her second album Porcelain was issued in 1989 and actually outperformed its predecessor in the UK, a situation echoed in the US where it remains Julia Fordham’s most successful album. There were some variations of track listings with this record, notably Manhattan Skyline was not present on the UK issue.

It has to be said that in terms of singles, Fordham was only an occasional botherer of the UK top 40, but (Love Moves In) Mysterious Ways from third album Swept did reach no. 19 in 1991. The success of this song, led to the reissue of the previous single I Thought It Was You.

Between them, these deluxe reissues blow the dust off a generous selection of seven-inch mixes, B-sides, promo edits and extended remixes, looking to provide a comprehensive overview of the period in question. It is also worth noting that the original master tapes are being used for this reissue.

Pepe Deluxe / Queen of the Wave deluxe edition to be won!

Basia / Time And Tide Deluxe Edition

Basia / Time And Tide 2CD Deluxe Edition

Polish-born Basia Trzetrzelewska (pronounced Basha Chechelevska) came to prominence as part of Matt Bianco in the early 1980s, and together with Mark Reilly and Danny White, contributed to the success of the band’s debut album Whose Side Are You On?

Basia and White both left Matt Bianco in 1985, and spent two years writing and recording her debut solo album Time And Tide. Released in 1987, the record was a success, especially in America where the title track was a top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In the end, six singles were released from the 10-track LP (the CD had a bonus track) across various territories. This resulted in a plethora of remixes, seven-inch edits and the odd B-side. The record became a solid foundation for a successful solo career, and only two years later in 1989, Basia had similar success, particularly in the US, with her follow-up album London Warsaw New York.

A new deluxe reissue of Time And Tide is due for release in May 2013 by Cherry Red Records, and adds 19 bonus tracks to the original album, as issued on CD. See the track listing below.

The album’s liner notes come complete with a specially commissioned interview with Colin.

Paul Hardcastle / Interview

Paul Hardcastle / Electrofied 80s

Paul Hardcastle is a artist, songwriter and producer who has been making music for the last 30 years. He started out in the electro/dance sphere, and in recent decades, his musical journey has led to him more of an ambient, smooth jazz sound, evident on last year’s 19 Below Zero album.

There have been plenty of diversions and collaborations along the way, with Hardcastle often recording under aliases, to avoid contractual problems. He is best known outside the US for his enormous hit single 19, which reflected on the plight of veterans who served in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. It would reach number one in 13 different countries around the world.

Demon Music Group through their Music Deluxe imprint, released Electrofied 80s: Essential Paul Hardcastle at the end of last month. This two-CD retrospective highlights some of Hardcastle’s best work with much focus on the music produced in the 1980s-era.

We recently caught up with Paul and spoke to him about this new release…

SuperDeluxeEdition: How did the new compilation come about?

Paul Hardcastle: Demon Music contacted me to say they were interested in getting together a compilation of my old electro and ’80s type of stuff, and to be honest with you, I thought that’s would be great, because number one I’d have a CD of all my stuff (laughs).
