Elvis / 20 Original Albums box set

The Perfect Elvis Presley Collection / 20 Original Albums box set

Sony/RCA recently released this new Elvis box set which is being marketed as The Perfect Elvis Presley Collection although there is no reference to this at all on the packaging, which simply refers to “Elvis: 20 Original Albums”.

Whatever it is called, the box consists of a decent selection of Elvis albums, kicking off with debut Elvis Presley in 1956 and ending, at the end, with Moody Blue in 1977. In between, the selection consists largely of studio albums along with the odd compilation and live set. We are thankfully spared all the movie soundtracks, but less happily also miss out on the ’68 Comeback Special and the other ’56 album, Elvis.

All the albums are packaged in the now familiar vinyl replica card wallets. Artwork reproduction is good (not outstanding) and the bespoke designed discs slot neatly inside the wallets without inner sleeves. The box is very attractively designed and is made from thick thick card with a lift-off lid.

The Perfect Elvis Presley Collection / 20 Original Albums box setThe set does come with an excellent, perfect-bound 36-page booklet and has some really informative, refreshingly honest, sleeve notes for each album in this set. 1971’s Love Letters From Elvis is described as “a bunch of leftovers” and Elvis Now from 1972 lacks “any real sense of cohesion”. It is nice to be treated as an intelligent adult by the (uncredited) author.

The albums themselves, being packaged as vinyl replicas, only list the original tracks on the back, but the booklet reveals that some contain plenty of bonus tracks as per separate releases. So Elvis Presley comes with six significant extra songs, including Heartbreak Hotel, Lawdy Miss Clawdy and I Want You, I Need You, I Love You and From Elvis In Memphis gets another half dozen tracks, including Suspicious Minds and Mama Liked The Roses.

With a seemingly endless amount of Elvis compilations and collections, it is refreshing to see his albums highlighted in this great value set. Only a fool would pretend they are all excellent, and the original design and presentation of the records in the seventies is truly abysmal. But for the serious music fan who might lack much from The King in his or her collection, The Perfect Elvis Presley Collection box set feels like a much more interesting way to investigate the man and his music than buying one CD with 20 number ones on it, and at around £35 / $67 for twenty albums, price is not a barrier.

Joni Mitchell / The Studio Albums 1968-1979 / 10CD box set

Joni Mitchell / The Studio Albums 1968-1979 box set

Rhino will release a Joni Mitchell box set on 29 October 2012.

The Studio Albums 1968-1979 gathers together Joni’s ten albums from that period, including all the classics such as 1971’s Blue and the acclaimed The Hissing Of Summer Lawns from 1975.

Expect the albums to be housed in simple card sleeves and held in a lift-off lid box. The design of the packaging is likely to be very similar to the Madonna Complete Studio Albums box that came from the same label a few months back (that box held 11 discs). Indeed, the graphic design for the top of this Joni box with the ‘grid’ of album covers is not dissimilar to Madonna’s box.

Albums included in this Joni Mitchell box set are listed below:

  • • Song To A Seagull (1968)
  • • Clouds (1969)
  • • Ladies of the Canyon (1970)
  • • Blue (1971)
  • • For The Roses (1972)
  • • Court and Spark (1974)
  • • The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1975)
  • • Hejira (1976)
  • • Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter (1977)
  • • Mingus (1979)

Nico / The End / 2CD Deluxe Edition

Nico / The End 2CD Deluxe

Nico‘s 1974 album, The End will be issued as a 2CD Deluxe Edition on 1 October 2012.

The 1973 album was her fourth solo release – another collaboration with John Cale – and was recorded in 1973 in London. Cale chose Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music to work on the album with him; between them they provided the entire instrumental framework for Nico and her harmonium.

This issue of The End is remastered here for the first time, and comes with a bonus disc of tracks including The End and a previously unreleased version of Das Lied der Deutschen performed live at London’s Rainbow Theatre on June 1, 1974, and some John Peel session tracks which are either unreleased or new to CD.

Georges Lang / La Collection volume two / 4CD box set

Georges Lang / La Collection Volume 2Rhino France continue to put together some excellent box sets, which can fall under the radar, largely due to not being promoted internationally and often only being available as imports outside France.

2011 brought us a generous helping of West Coast jazz-pop with Michael Franks‘ superb The Dream 1973-2011 box set, and last year the Warner Music France imprint also released a four-disc “Georges Lang Collection”. Lang is a legendary French DJ who has worked the late night shift (Les Noctures) on the RTL radio station for many decades and that box was a selection of his favourite early R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, doo wop, soul and ‘adult contemporary’ songs – mainly American classics.

Peter Gabriel responds to ‘open letter’ about the “So” Deluxe Box Set

So Deluxe Box / Peter Gabriel

>>Follow SuperDeluxeEdition on twitter

Peter Gabriel has this afternoon personally responded my open letter about the forthcoming So Deluxe Box Set. In the letter he admits “we got this wrong” by not including Live In Athens on Blu-ray and adds that “there are no plans, at present, for a stand-alone version” (of Live In Athens). In response to the letter and fan feedback, the download included with the box will now include “a selection of tracks in 720p” which Gabriel acknowledges is “not perfect” but is “the best we can do in the circumstances”.

The Rolling Stones / Brussels Affair Limited Edition Numbered Box Sets

The Rolling Stones / Brussels Affair Box Sets

Last November The Rolling Stones made their much bootlegged 1973 gig recorded at the Forest National in Belgium available for download, via their new stonesarchive.com website. The Brussels Affair was available in MP3 or FLAC format, for under $10 but was not given a physical release.

On 17 November, almost exactly one year on, the band will be making available three limited edition box sets of The Brussels Affair which start at an eye-watering $750 rising to a dizzy $1500 for the most expensive variant.

All three sets feature a 180-gram triple-vinyl set of the complete Brussels concert, a ’70s-era “Tongue & Lips” Watch with Japan Seiko movement and stainless steel face with brass dial and a 200 page Limited-Edition Book, numbered and hand-signed by Mick Jagger, Michael Putland and Nick Kent.

The “Art Edition” is the most expensive box ($1500) and also features a Limited-Edition Silver Gelatin Print, hand-signed by the photographer, Michael Putland. Only 73 of these sets are being made available.

The cheapest “Collector’s Edition” still has a production run of only 1,727 and comes with a 1973 Tour Lithograph, while the mid-range “Platinum Edition” replaces this standard litho with a Limited-Edition Tour Litho of 173 pieces, hand-signed by Mick Jagger, with only 173 units available.

Despite the high costs, it is interesting to note that none of The Brussels Affair Box Sets include the concert on CD or in a hi-res format.

All the sets can be ordered direct from the Brussels Affair Box Set Shop.

The Who Live In Texas 1975 / DVD

The Who Live In Texas 1975 / DVDEagle Rock are due to release The Who Live In Texas ’75 on DVD in early October 2012.

The gig was filmed in Houston, Texas on 20 November 1975, right at the start of a massive tour of the U.S. to promote The Who By Numbers, their seventh album

The 117-minute 25-song set has previously only available as a bootleg and the audio and video has been restored by longtime Who collaborator Jon Astley. However, it is still interesting to note that there does not appear to be a Blu-ray option, which might suggest something other than pristine footage. The audio will be available in Dolby Digital Stereo sound, so there will be no surround option.

PRE-ORDER The Who Live In Texas ’75 here (UK) or here (US).

Real World shrugs its shoulders at Peter Gabriel “So” box criticism

Peter Gabriel / So Super Deluxe EditionOur criticism of Peter Gabriel‘s So Deluxe Box received an unprecedented response from fans, with record breaking hits and an enormous amount of you leaving comments to tell us that you were in complete agreement.

This open letter sought to draw some kind of response from Gabriel or his management team and late last week, things looked positive, when EMI informed us that having drawn their attention to the storm of criticism, Real World and PG Management were ‘constructing a response to your letter’.

Michael Jackson / Bad 25 Target exclusive with bonus DVD

Michael Jackson / Bad 25 / 3CD+DVD

Sony chose not to put any of the videos for the Bad singles on the Deluxe 3CD+DVD reissue of Michael Jackson’s 1987 album. It seemed rather strange to ignore these, but on the other hand it was strange to ignore all the period twelve-inch remixes that could have been included too.

Well, it turns out that US superstore Target has an exclusive version of the two-CD Bad reissue that does include all the Bad videos. This unique three-disc version has a DVD as part of the package with the following exclusive content:

Bonus DVD including the following videos:

  • • Bad
  • • The Way You Make Me Feel
  • • Speed Demon
  • • Liberian Girl
  • • Another Part of Me
  • • Man In The Mirror
  • • Dirty Diana
  • • Smooth Criminal
  • • Leave Me Alone

It is not clear whether these videos include the ‘short film’ versions of tracks like Bad, or whether any 5.1 surround audio is present, but either way, it rankles that you only get this if you live in North America and choose to shop at Target.

Earlier this summer, the I Just Can’t Stop Loving You physical CD single was a Wal-Mart-only exclusive in North America.

What do you think of Record Labels increasingly offering these ‘exclusives’ to stores such as Target? Leave a comment with your views.

Deacon Blue / multi-disc reissues

Deacon Blue to reissue all their albums

Demon Music Group are set to release some of the most comprehensive deluxe reissues seen for a long time this October, when what looks like Deacon Blue‘s entire commercial studio output is issued via imprint Edsel Records, largely in 2CD+DVD and 3CD+DVD variants.

All five studio albums will come in the luxurious ‘case-bound book’ packaging used on the recent Everything But The Girl reissues and have been produced with the full cooperation of Ricky Ross, who has contributed notes in the booklets, all the lyrics to his songs, and ephemera and photos from his own collection.

In addition, a brand new compilation called The Rest will round-up tracks not naturally associated with specific records. These include the new tracks from the 1999 semi-studio album Walking Back Home, the Four Bacharach and David Songs EP and new tracks included on the 1994 Our Town greatest hits album.

Raintown, When The World Knows Your Name, Fellow Hoodlums and Whatever You Say, Say Nothing are all released on 8 October, followed by Homesick on the 15 October and The Rest on 29 October.
