2012 Reissue wish list / Day 6 / Madonna: Erotica

Madonna / Erotica / Super Deluxe EditionApart from her three greatest hits, Madonna has not shown much interest in repackaging and expanding her back catalogue.

Her first three records were remastered and reissued back in 2001, but it was a rather haphazard affair, with a simple 1CD re-release with two or three remixes bolted on to the albums proper. Some bizarre decisions were made, such as not even including Into The Groove as a bonus track on Like A Virgin when many European fans knew it as part of the album (it became track six on the 1985 reissue for most of the world).

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 5 / Fleetwood Mac: Tango In The Night

Fleetwood Mac / Tango In The Night / 25th Anniversary EditionFleetwood Mac’s Tango In The Night is 25 years old in April 2012, and becomes the fifth album in my reissue wish list for next year.

Maybe it’s not the connoisseur’s choice, with it’s ‘80s production sheen, but the album sold massively well on the back of a never ending stream of singles, a few of which hit the top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact remarkably, Tango In The Night is the second best selling Fleetwood Mac album after Rumours.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 4 / Kate Bush: The Dreaming

Kate Bush / The Dreaming / 30th Anniversary EditionKate Bush’s The Dreaming album from 1982 is my choice for day four of the 2012 reissue wish list.

I’m well aware that a 30th anniversary deluxe release of this rather misunderstood album, is probably a hope in vain. With the exception of Director’s Cut from this year, Kate isn’t particularly interested in her past. There were rumours of EMI planning a deluxe reissue campaign in the 12 ‘quiet’ years between The Red Shoes and Aerial, but they came to naught.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 3 / INXS Welcome To Wherever You Are

INXS / Welcome To Wherever You Are / 20th Anniversary EditionAlthough 1987’s Kick could be a likely contender for a 25th Anniversary Edition in 2012 (a two disc deluxe was released in 2002) INXS’s 1992 Album, Welcome To Wherever You Are is my preferred choice for reissue next year.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 2 / Paul McCartney: Tug Of War

Much had changed for Paul McCartney in late 1980, as he set about recording what would be only his third solo album since The Beatles’ split in 1970 (Ram was credited to Paul and Linda).

Doors: L.A. Woman 5-disc Super Deluxe Edition cancelled

Doors / L.A. Woman 40th Anniversary EditionThe 5-disc Super Deluxe Edition of the Doors’ L.A. Woman will no longer be released.

The title was initially announced back in September, by Doors’ Manager Jeff Jampol, and since then an initial, somewhat optimistic, release date of 24 November has come and gone and a new release date of the end of January 2012 was announced. In fact, despite the band taking hundreds of pre-orders (with payment up-front) it seems that Rhino Records has decided that it is not a commercially viable project.

REM / Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011

R.E.M. Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011When drummer Bill Berry left R.E.M. in 1997, Michael Stipe was bullish and said “I guess a three-legged dog is still a dog. It just has to learn to run differently”. True enough, but the band themselves have now decided that the time has come to have this limping dog put to sleep (humanely, of course). R.E.M. are no more. Paul McCartney to release new album My Valentine in Feb 2012

Paul McCartney / New album / My Valentine / NewsPaul McCartney’s next studio album will be entitled My Valentine and is expected to be released on Feb 6th 2012.

Speaking to French radio station RTL, McCartney described the forthcoming album as “old-fashioned”. He said: “This will sound like the years between 1920-1940, the time when my father was 20. These are songs I heard. My family, my uncles, everybody sang. And there will be pieces I wrote, but in this style. ”

Phil Harding / Club Mixes of the 80s

Phil Harding / Club Mixes of the 80s / 2CD ReviewFans of pop music from the 1980s, and in particular students of the Stock-Aitken-Waterman ‘hit factory’ era of 1985-1990 will be excited by the release of a new compilation from Cherry Red called Phil Harding Club Mixes of the 80s.

Kate Bush / 50 Words For Snow / Review

In 1985 Kate Bush released The Ninth Wave which was the name given to side two of her fifth album Hounds of Love. This was a collection of songs around one theme, in this instance someone lost at sea, floating in the water through the night with their mind wandering, contemplating, amongst other things, their own death. 20 years later, disc two of Aerial (A Sky of Honey) similarly, was a song-cycle celebrating the elements of the sun, the sky and the sea in a 24 hour period.
