Warner Music/Rhino are to release 80s Symphonic next month, a new ’80s compilation that features 80s original recordings combined with orchestral arrangements.

The album features songs like David Bowie‘s ‘Let’s Dance’, a-ha‘s ‘Take On Me’, Simple Minds‘ ‘Alive and Kicking’, Echo & the Bunnymen‘s ‘The Killing Moon’ and many more eighties classics.

Family at the BBC / 8-disc deluxe set

British rock band Family‘s recordings for the BBC are brought together for a special eight-disc deluxe set to mark 50 years since the band’s first album.

Family released seven studio albums between 1968 and 1973 and had a sound that evolved into a unique mix of blues, folk, jazz, psychedelia and high energy rock ‘n’ roll, built around the distinctive vocals of frontman Roger Chapman, Charlie Whitney’s innovative guitar playing and Rob Townsend’s intelligent drumming.

During that time the band recorded many sessions for the BBC including for programmes such as “Top Gear,” “Saturday Club,” “Colour Me Pop,” “In Concert” and various John Peel and Bob Harris shows.

National Album Day

It’s national album day today. I’m not sure who decided it was national album day, but chances are it was the same industry that has delivered Spotify and other streaming platforms that encourage people to listen to theme-based playlists and just sample ‘the best’ tracks from albums and quickly move on.

I’m not going to do anything gimmicky to ‘celebrate’ national album day, because I guess like many of you, EVERY DAY is an ‘album day’ for me. I love listening to music and love albums.

With the American Treasure box now out (at least on CD) news reaches SDE of another Tom Petty collection that’s due next month. As the title suggests, The Best of Everything: The Definitive Career Spanning Hits Collection 1976-2016 is more focussed on ‘hits’ than rarities, although inevitably the record label has added a couple of unreleased tracks.
