Eagle Rock will release Paul McCartney‘s Live Kisses on Blu-ray and DVD on 12 November 2012.
Live Kisses showcases McCartney’s performance of songs from his Kisses On The Bottom album (which was released in February 2012) live from the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Paul is joined by a virtuoso group of musicians led by Diana Krall on the piano for renditions of classic songs from the American songbook and his self-penned My Valentine. The DVD and Blu-ray includes interview clips between songs with Paul, Diana Krall and many of those involved in the recording of the Kisses On The Bottom album.
The audio for four of the tracks was made available as a free download to those who purchased the Deluxe Edition of Kisses On The Bottom and nine audio tracks are available as the album “iTunes Live from Capitol Studios”.
The Rolling Stones gig at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, was filmed on 16mm film, and last year the footage was carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes.
This Live In Texas concert was released on an enormous amount of formats last year – a standalone DVD, DVD/CD combo, Blu-ray, Blu-ray/CD combo (all from Eagle Rock) and some footage even made a ‘promotional’ appearance on the rather thin Some GirlsSuper Deluxe Edition, solely to encourage fans who had already paid around £75 for the rather thin set to purchase the full gig.
Not content with all this activity last year, Eagle Rock have come up with a new version of Live In Texas in an attempt to get you to part with your cash. This time the audio has been pressed onto two 180g vinyl records which comes packaged with a CD (repeating the audio) and a DVD of the video. The whole thing comes packaged in a three-panel gatefold sleeve, with the CD and DVD discs inserted into the middle panel. This is due for release on 10 September 2012.
CD and DVD in the middle panel
The extras on the DVD are the same as before – an interview with Mick Jagger in Paris 2011, and performances from Saturday Night Live in October 1978 including Tomorrow featuring Dan Aykroyd & Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones performing Shattered, Respectable & Beast Of Burden. In addition excerpts from an ABC 20/20 Special on Rolling Stones rehearsing for the US tour (Jun 1978) are included as a bonus feature.
There is not a Blu-ray version of this vinyl combo release, forcing those wanting the optimum audio and video quality to forsake the vinyl or buy two formats.
If you can wait until 15 October, a cheap way of picking up the Blu-ray version of Some Girls: Live In Texas is to purchase yet another Eagle-Rock variation. This time it’s a ‘Special Limited Collectors’ Edition’ – a Rolling Stones double pack that brings together the Blu-rays of the Exile On Main Street era Ladies & Gentlemen (filmed in 1972 on the US tour) and Some Girls: Live In Texas. At the time of writing this can be pre-ordered on amazon.co.uk for £11.89.
The Beach Boys continue their 50th anniversary celebrations with a number of significant releases over the next few months.
On 24 September (9 October in the US) Capitol/EMI will issue two new hits collections. The first will be a single disc release, appropriately titled ‘Greatest Hits’ and will take in 20 of their most popular tracks, including recent single That’s Why God Made The Radio. An alternative, broader selection will be offered on a two-CD box – Greatest Hits: Fifty Big Ones. The packaging for this release will be similar to the Smile Sessions 2CD set, with a lift-off lid box and expanded booklet and postcards within. Universal Music will reissue Steve Winwood‘s Arc Of A Diver, on 24 September as a two-CD deluxe edition.
The album was Winwood’s second solo record, and provided him with a US top ten hit (his first) in the form of While You See A Chance. The singer is, of course, a talented multi-instrumentalist and played everything on this album.
The bonus material is slight but well chosen – it includes a BBC Radio 2 documentary about the album and some rare radio edits of the album tracks.
Pre-order Arc Of A Diver Deluxe here (US) or here (UK).
As previously revealed on this blog, The BeatlesMagical MysteryTour film is coming Blu-ray (and DVD) on 8 October (worldwide) and 9 October in North America – the news is now official.
Even better news is that as well as standard releases on DVD and Blu-ray, a special, boxed deluxe edition will also be available with the following contents:
• Set housed in a 10″x10″ box
• Both DVD and Blu-ray included
• 60-page book with background information, photographs and documentation from the production,
• A faithful reproduction of the mono double 7″ vinyl EP of the film’s six new Beatles songs, originally issued in the UK to complement the film’s 1967 release!
This sounds superb, and the set is currently retailing for £59.99 on Apple’s online store.
The film has been fully restored by Paul Rutan Jr. of Eque Inc., the same company that handled the much acclaimed restoration of Yellow Submarine. The soundtrack has been remixed into 5.1 surround! This work was done at Abbey Road Studios by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. This means DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for the Blu-ray!
Tori Amos releases a new album featuring orchestral reworkings of previously released songs on 1 October 2012. Gold Dust will be her thirteenth studio album and was recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley. Continue reading “Tori Amos / Gold Dust”
Deep Purple‘s 1972 Machine Head album gets a 40th anniversary reissue on 8 October which includes a 4CD+DVD box set.
The influential album was the band’s sixth, and would top the chart in the UK. Its most famous song Smoke On The Water described the burning down of Montreux Casino in Switzerland where the band had originally planned to record the album. In a few weeks it will be a year since EMI released a Super Deluxe Edition box set that featured – amongst other things – lossless surround sound album mixes, hi-res stereo, and Blu-ray for video and audio. One year on, and the same label will be shortly releasing another Deluxe Box set for a different artist that has none of the above, but… you guessed it, they are happily charging the same price.
The former was Pink Floyd’s mighty Dark Side Of The Moon ‘Immersion’ box, the later is Peter Gabriel’s flawed So Super Deluxe box set. What is going on, and why are the specifications of some of the most recently announced box sets failing to meet audience expectations? Paul Sinclair examines the issues… Continue reading “Super Deluxe Rip-off featuring “So””
While we wait to see if EMI will continue to release Duran Duran deluxe reissues by tackling 1990’s Liberty and 1993’s Duran Duran (The Wedding Album), Demon Music Group are to about to put out a comprehensive looking 2CD set (under their Music Club Deluxe imprint) which covers the band’s output right up until the point when the Decade hits compilation was originally released (late 1989). ZTT and Salvo release a new Propaganda ‘best of’ on 10 September 2012. Noise and Girls Come Out to Play collects tracks from the records from across their short ZTT career including A Secret Wish, Wishful Thinking, Duel, Do Well, p:Machinery, the Nine Lives of Dr Mabuse and Propaganda’s studio sessions during their years spent taping at Sarm Studios, 1983 to 1986.
Obviously, given the rich vaults of ZTT, they have made things interesting (as usual) by providing previously unreleased variations of certain tracks, so Propaganda fans should take a close look at the track listing below. Previously unreleased tracks highlighted with an asterisk.
Salvo’s expanded Kirsty MacColl reissues are due for release on 8 October. Kite, Electric Landlady and Titanic Days are all two-CD deluxe reissues, with bonus discs full of B-sides, remixes, radio sessions and live tracks, while debut Desperate Character is released on CD for the first time, and comes as a single disc edition without bonus tracks.
Hear Music will release a 2CD/DVD combo entitled Paul Simon Live in New York City on 18 September. The audio and video are taken from the singer-songwriter’s Webster Hall show in NYC last November.
The set will also be available separately on Blu-ray.
Mark Knopfler‘s new album Privateering (due on 3 September) will be issued by Mercury Music in a variety of formats including a standard 2CD package, a Deluxe 3CD edition and a Super Deluxe Box Set.
Peter Gabriel‘s So limited edition box set has been confirmed and officially announced via his website. Interestingly, there is no reference to it being an ‘Immersion’ box (as described on amazon.com) with Gabriel’s site referring to it as a ‘Limited Edition Box Set’ or a ‘Deluxe Box Set’. The now iconic Velvet Underground & Nico album celebrates its 45th anniversary on 30 October 2012 with a multi-format, worldwide release on 29/30 October that includes stereo and mono versions remastered from the original tapes, previously unreleased recordings of the band’s rehearsals in Warhol’s Factory and the subsequent rare April 1966 Scepter Studios recordings captured on acetate which feature early, alternate versions of songs later issued on the album. Continue reading “The Velvet Underground & Nico / Six disc Super Deluxe Edition”
Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings gathers together all eight of the art-rock band’s studio albums and was recently released after numerous delays.
Originally this 10CD set was to be a 12-disc affair, with eight CDs and four hi-res audio DVDs, to appeal to general collectors and audiophiles alike. The DVDs were quietly dropped and the bonus tracks were relocated. Rather than being tacked on the end of each album they were collected together on two bonus CDs. The lack of hi-res audio is a big blow to those looking for a reason to repurchase albums they might own many times over, although having unspoiled albums free of appended bonus audio can be regarded as good thing.
