Tom Waits / Night On Earth / Original SoundtrackNight On Earth is a Jim Jarmusch film from 1991. It’s actually five shorts, each centred around a passenger taking a ride in a cab.

We start off in Los Angeles in the evening (with Winona Ryder) and work our way through to New York, Paris (Beatrice Dalle), Rome with the film ending with the sun rising in Helsinki. Continue reading “2012 Reissue wish list / Day 11 / Tom Waits: Night On Earth OST”

2012 Reissue wishlist / Day 10 / Alexander O’Neal / Hearsay

Alexander O'Neal / Hearsay / 25th Anniversary EditionHearsay was released in 1987 and was an R&B and pop phenomenon, particularly in the UK, where the four hit singles (Fake, Criticize, Never Knew Love Like This and The Lovers) were all over the airwaves and played in clubs for the best part of 12 months. The Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced album was so successful, that three further singles (Hearsay ’89, What Can I Say To Make You Love Me, and Sunshine) were released almost two years later and all charted. 2012 Reissue wish list / Day 9 / Lou Reed: Magic And Loss

Lou Reed / Magic and Loss / 20th Anniversary EditionMagic and Loss was Lou Reed’s third album in as many years.

After the critically acclaimed New York album of 1989, the ex-Velvet Underground man teamed up with his old band mate, John Cale, to celebrate Andy Warhol’s life with Songs For Drella (1990).

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 8 / Bruce Springsteen: Tunnel Of Love

Bruce Springsteen / Tunnel Of Love / 25th Anniversary EditionAfter the stadium bombast and Arthur Baker remixes of Born In The USA, Bruce Springsteen released a very different record, three years later in October 1987.

His marriage to Julianne Phillips (they wed in 1985) was falling apart – denied at the time of release – and the songs on new album Tunnel Of Love would reflect this with meditations on love, self-doubt and disappointment.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 7 / Prince: Sign O’ The Times

Prince / Sign O' The Times / 25th Anniversary EditionAlthough Prince might disagree, Warner Bros. actually did him a big favour by refusing to release his proposed three record set, Crystal Ball, as the follow-up to 1986’s Parade, and requesting that he limit himself to the double album format that would result in Sign O’ The Times.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 6 / Madonna: Erotica

Madonna / Erotica / Super Deluxe EditionApart from her three greatest hits, Madonna has not shown much interest in repackaging and expanding her back catalogue.

Her first three records were remastered and reissued back in 2001, but it was a rather haphazard affair, with a simple 1CD re-release with two or three remixes bolted on to the albums proper. Some bizarre decisions were made, such as not even including Into The Groove as a bonus track on Like A Virgin when many European fans knew it as part of the album (it became track six on the 1985 reissue for most of the world).

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 5 / Fleetwood Mac: Tango In The Night

Fleetwood Mac / Tango In The Night / 25th Anniversary EditionFleetwood Mac’s Tango In The Night is 25 years old in April 2012, and becomes the fifth album in my reissue wish list for next year.

Maybe it’s not the connoisseur’s choice, with it’s ‘80s production sheen, but the album sold massively well on the back of a never ending stream of singles, a few of which hit the top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact remarkably, Tango In The Night is the second best selling Fleetwood Mac album after Rumours.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 4 / Kate Bush: The Dreaming

Kate Bush / The Dreaming / 30th Anniversary EditionKate Bush’s The Dreaming album from 1982 is my choice for day four of the 2012 reissue wish list.

I’m well aware that a 30th anniversary deluxe release of this rather misunderstood album, is probably a hope in vain. With the exception of Director’s Cut from this year, Kate isn’t particularly interested in her past. There were rumours of EMI planning a deluxe reissue campaign in the 12 ‘quiet’ years between The Red Shoes and Aerial, but they came to naught.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 3 / INXS Welcome To Wherever You Are

INXS / Welcome To Wherever You Are / 20th Anniversary EditionAlthough 1987’s Kick could be a likely contender for a 25th Anniversary Edition in 2012 (a two disc deluxe was released in 2002) INXS’s 1992 Album, Welcome To Wherever You Are is my preferred choice for reissue next year.

2012 Reissue wish list / Day 2 / Paul McCartney: Tug Of War

Much had changed for Paul McCartney in late 1980, as he set about recording what would be only his third solo album since The Beatles’ split in 1970 (Ram was credited to Paul and Linda).

Doors: L.A. Woman 5-disc Super Deluxe Edition cancelled

Doors / L.A. Woman 40th Anniversary EditionThe 5-disc Super Deluxe Edition of the Doors’ L.A. Woman will no longer be released.

The title was initially announced back in September, by Doors’ Manager Jeff Jampol, and since then an initial, somewhat optimistic, release date of 24 November has come and gone and a new release date of the end of January 2012 was announced. In fact, despite the band taking hundreds of pre-orders (with payment up-front) it seems that Rhino Records has decided that it is not a commercially viable project.
