Last week in the SDE Newsletter (subscribe here!) I wrote an exclusive editorial entitled ‘format wars’ which articulated my views on the so-called ‘vinyl revival’ and particularly the marginalisation of the CD format in mainstream music media. This gathered quite a bit of interest and comment, so I’m publishing it here on SDE in an expanded (but not remastered!) version, with some ‘bonus’ thoughts.

A new live set from the late Irish blues guitarist and songwriter Rory Gallagher is on the way in March. Check Shirt Wizard: Live in ’77 is culled from four shows (London, Brighton, Sheffield and Newcastle) and features 20 previously unreleased live performances.

The Allman Brothers Band / Trouble No More: 50th Anniversary Collection

Universal Music will release a 50th anniversary Allman Brothers Band box set in February. Trouble No More – named after the Muddy Waters song the band first jammed to – will be available as a five-CD package or an extravagant 10LP box set.

Sony’s Legacy Recordings will reissue five Bruce Springsteen albums on vinyl next month. These albums were mostly originally released early in the new millennium and the selection includes the two studio albums The Rising (2002) and Devils & Dust (2005).

A new box celebrating Toyah’s career is on its way • Signed set sold out

Toyah’s solo career is to be celebrated in a new box set due next month from Demon.

Toyah Solo mops up the era from 1985 onwards when Willcox signed as a solo turn to Sony’s Portrait Records and then subsequent EG releases, and comprises of seven CDs and a DVD plus a 48 page book. (If you’re a cursory fan and a bit confused and wondering ‘hang on, wasn’t she always solo?’ it transpires that up until then, Toyah was the name of the band she fronted.)

Parlophone announce David Bowie RSD release + streaming rarities
