Listen to Pink Floyd’s new single for Ukraine

Pink Floyd have surprised everyone by releasing new music in support of the people of Ukraine. The song is called ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ and is the sees David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined by long time Pink Floyd bass player Guy Pratt and Nitin Sawhney on keyboards and features an extraordinary vocal performance by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band Boombox.

The track was only recorded on 30 March 2022 and uses Andriy’s vocals taken from his Instagram post of him singing in Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square. The song itself ‘The Red Viburnum In The Meadow’ is a rousing Ukrainian protest song written during the first world war which has been taken up across the world over the past month in protest of the invasion of Ukraine. The title of the Pink Floyd track is taken from the last line of the song which translates as ‘Hey Hey Rise up and rejoice’.

Gilmour explains how he came to know Andriy and his band Boombox. “In 2015, I played a show at Koko in London in support of the Belarus Free Theatre, whose members have been imprisoned. Pussy Riot and the Ukrainian band, Boombox, were also on the bill. They were supposed to do their own set, but their singer Andriy had visa problems, so the rest of the band backed me for my set – we played Wish You Were Here for Andriy that night.Recently I read that Andriy had left his American tour with Boombox, had gone back to Ukraine, and joined up with the Territorial Defense. Then I saw this incredible video on Instagram, where he stands in a square in Kyiv with this beautiful gold-domed church and sings in the silence of a city with no traffic or background noise because of the war. It was a powerful moment that made me want to put it to music.”

While writing the music for the track, David managed to speak with Andriy from his hospital bed in Kyiv where he was recovering from a mortar shrapnel injury. “I played him a little bit of the song down the phone line and he gave me his blessing. We both hope to do something together in person in the future.”

Speaking about the track Gilmour says, “I hope it will receive wide support and publicity. We want to raise funds for humanitarian charities, and raise morale. We want express our support for Ukraine and in that way, show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become.”

The artwork for the track features a painting of the national flower of Ukraine, the sunflower, by the Cuban artist, Yosan Leon. The cover of the single is a direct reference to the woman who was seen around the world giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers and telling them to carry them in their pockets so that when they die, sunflowers will grow.

Obviously, there is no physical version of the song (at least for now). But you can buy the download and all proceeds go to Ukranian Humanitarian Relief.

The next SDE-exclusive blu-ray is Gilbert O’Sullivan’s new album, ‘Driven’

SDE continues to champion spatial/hi-res audio via physical product

SDE has brought you two exclusive blu-ray audio releases so far in 2022, in partnership with artists and labels who share our enthusiasm for bringing you surround sound mixes and hi-res audio on a physical format. The year started with the Tears For Fears’ The Tipping Point, continued with xPropaganda and I’m thrilled to announce that the third in our series will be channeling some classic seventies songwriting vibes via the brand new album from the legendary Irish-born singer and musician, Gilbert O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan’s gifts have been long-established, and his observational style of songwriting, unique blend of melodic craftsmanship and witty wordplay chimed with the public on both sides of the Atlantic early in his career, as songs like ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’, and ‘Clair’ topped the charts in the UK and/or America (in 1972).

The hits continued in the 1970s, even if things were quieter in subsequent decades, but the music endured via regular compilations, ensuing new generation of artists (Paul Weller, Squeeze etc.) expressing their admiration and of course Gilbert’s songs feature regularly in films (such as 1999 family favourite Stuart Little).

That’s not to say there were not new long-players from time to time, and indeed his last outing, 2018’s well-received Gilbert O’Sullivan, was this 19th studio album and reached number 20 in the UK charts.

The new album – Driven – has been produced by Andy Wright (who has worked with Simply Red, Eurythmics, Simple Minds and Echo and The Bunnymen, among others). It’s remarkable, inasmuch as it feels both familiar and fresh at the same time. It bears all the hallmarks of this classic singer-songwriter but mixes the signature piano ballads (‘Blue Anchor Bay’) with some peppier uptempo numbers recorded with a full band at London’s famous RAK Studios (the JJ Cale-esque opener ‘Love Casualty’ being a great example). KT Tunstall duets on the springhtly ‘Take Love’ (the first single) while Mick Hucknall sings beautifully on the mid-paced reflective number ‘Let Bygones Be Bygones’. There’s also a wonderful string-backed ballad, ‘If Only Love Had Ears’ that is ridiculously McCartney-esque (never a bad thing!).

Take Love (featuring KT Tunstall) is the first single from Driven

Driven will be available on CD and vinyl but the SDE-exclusive blu-ray will be the ultimate audio format; the connoisseur’s choice. It will offer the following mixes:

  • Dolby Atmos Mix
  • 5.1 Surround Mix
  • Stereo Mix

Even better, early pre-orderers will snag an edition SIGNED by Gilbert O’Sullivan! These are available while stocks last (the listing will be updated once the signed editions have sold out so you’ll know what you are ordering).

Let’s pause, for the now traditional ‘Reasons you should own this blu-ray’!

  • It’s a great record. Naturally. I wouldn’t do this with an album I didn’t like.
  • It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of Driven via a physical product
  • You don’t have to subscribe to a streaming service like Tidal or Apple Music to hear the Dolby Atmos mix
  • It’s yours to keep forever. You own the product, you are not renting it from a ‘DSP’ (digital service provider)
  • You love ‘Holding the Music in Your Hands‘, so here’s your chance!
  • You ordered the others and want to continue to build your ‘SDE Surround Series’ collection and enjoy the variety artists/eras on offer and quality of the product.
  • The blu-ray audio is a great format for immersive/hi-res audio and you don’t want to see it die off
  • Supporting SDE with these ventures is working – thank you! – and will lead to similar collaborations with labels/artists. I’m sure, like me, you’d love this to continue!

Driven will be released on 22 July 2022, via BMG.

With the blink-and-you’ll-miss situation with Tears For Fears/xPropaganda we have listened to your views and there’s a slightly different approach this time around in terms of pre-ordering. The pre-order window for the limited edition blu-ray audio opens today and will close in 14 days’ time. This is a one-time production run and numbers will be published at a later date, so you will know just how limited this physical product is.

This product is ONLY available via the SDE shop. Pre-order by using this link or the button below. Remember, these are signed while stocks last.

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT.

The Clash / Combat Rock reissue

Sony are to reissue Combat Rock, the last ‘proper’ Clash album, with a bonus disc of rare and early versions of songs.

Originally released in May 1982, Combat Rock is the final album from the Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon line-up. The album features three singles, including ‘Rock The Casbah’ and ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’. The latter got to number 17 in the UK charts but reached number one in 1991, when it was re-released.

This deluxe reissue includes 12 bonus tracks collected under the banner ‘The People’s Hall’. This is a reference to the hall where the band camped up to rehearse and record before heading off on a tour of the East and South East Asia (Pennie Smith captured the album cover photo on this tour when they were in Thailand). The People’s Hall was in the so-called Republic of Frestonia an area of West London which was a creative hub for artists, musicians, writers, actors and activists. Many squatted there (the name came from Freston Road) and the residents eventually set up a housing trust with the local council.

The 3LP set of Combat Rock/The People’s Hall (click image to enlarge)

The tracks on ‘The People’s Hall’ chart the period from what was their last single ‘This Is Radio Clash’ right up to the release of Combat Rock, and includes unheard, rare and early versions of tracks. Broadly speaking we are talking about late 1981 and early ’82.

The bonus cuts include a new version of ‘Know Your Rights’ and the previously unreleased instrumental ‘He Who Dares Or Is Tired’. Other tracks include ‘Futura 2000’, an unreleased original mix of ‘The Escapades of Futura 2000’, Mikey Dread’s ‘Radio One’, and the outtakes ‘The Fulham Connection’, previously known as ‘The Beautiful People Are Ugly Too’ as well as ‘Idle in Kangaroo Court’.

Combat Rock/The People’s Hall in its 2CD guise (click image to enlarge)

This deluxe edition of Combat Rock is a 2CD set or a 3LP vinyl package (with The People’s Hall requiring two LPs, although side D contains no music so it’s either etched, or just blank). Both editions come with a poster.

Combat Rock/The People’s Hall will be released on 20 May 2022 by Sony Music. The label have also decided to release a seven-inch single of The Clash + the late Ranking Roger versions of ‘Rock the Casbah’ and ‘Red Angel Dragnet’. This comes out on the same day.

George Michael’s Older reissue: Formats confirmed

The reissue of George Michael’s 1996 album Older has been officially confirmed today.

The remastered album is being reissued on 2LP black vinyl with white and green vinyl exclusives available from Amazon UK and the indie community respectively.

The Older super deluxe includes 3LPs and five CDs (click image to enlarge)

Its also available on CD but, surprisingly, there is no CD-only deluxe, the sole box set is the 3LP+5CD super deluxe. That set has the following content:

  • Older 2LP vinyl
  • Upper vinyl LP
  • Older CD
  • Upper CD
  • Mixes One CD
  • Mixes Two CD
  • Mixes Three CD

Sony highlight one previously unreleased track – the 6.38 Jon Douglas Remix of ‘Spinning The Wheel’ – but this appears to be a mistake, since it was included on the ‘Dance Mixes’ CD of that third single. Aside from a smattering of promo-only radio edits, everything in the Older super deluxe box set was issued on the CD singles or vinyl 12-inches back in the day. The box set includes art prints and a 12”x12” 48 page book ‘The Story of Older’.

Older is finally back on vinyl. Amazon-exclusive 2LP white vinyl likely to prove popular

Older will be reissued on 30 September 2022 (was 16 September, and before that 12 August and 8 July) via Sony Music. I’d encourage you to use the rating mechanism at the top of this page to give box set feedback to the label and let fellow fans know what you think.

Cult classic Toy Matinee back on vinyl

Short-lived American band Toy Matinee’s self-titled 1990 album is being made available on limited edition coloured vinyl in a small production run.

The band had an incredible pedigree and featured songwriter and producer Pat Leonard (who co-wrote half of Madonna’s True Blue album and most of Like A Prayer and would go on to work with Bryan Ferry and Roger Waters, amongst others), singer-songwriter Kevin Gilbert (who contributed significantly to Sheryl Crow’s 1993 album Tuesday Night Music Club), and heavyweight session bassist Guy Pratt, who played on Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’, Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’, toured extensively with Pink Floyd and most recently was in Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets. Other contributors included Bill Bottrell (Sheryl Crow, Michael Jackson), drummer Brian MacLeod and Tim Pierce on guitar. Julian Lennon sings backing vocals on two tracks.

With Bill Bottrell at the helm, the album has a crisp, satisfying early 90s rock/pop production and is full of brilliant tracks sung by Kevin Gilbert and mostly co-written by Patrick Leonard and Gilbert (Guy Pratt contributes to four numbers)

Tim Pierce tells the story of Toy Matinee

This lost classic of an album has been unavailable on vinyl since its original release in 1990 and regularly sells for over £100 on Discogs. This new vinyl pressing is from Music On Vinyl and sees the Toy Matinee album pressed on 180g limited blue vinyl. And it really is limited. There are only 1000 numbered copies being pressed for the world with just 200 allocated for the UK! These are already sold out at the label/distributors.

I’m personally a very big fan of this record and would urge you to give it a go. It is not one you want to miss out on – you will not be disappointed. Check out guitarist Tim Pierce’s great YouTube film above and take a listen to a few tracks from the album, below.

Toy Matinee is released on blue vinyl on 8 April 2022. Place your order from the SDE shop using this link or the button below. We have a guaranteed allocation and shipping starts in a few days.

EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT.

Pavement / Terror Twilight (reissue)

Matador Records reissue Pavement’s fifth and final album, the Nigel Godrich-produced Terror Twilight. The reissue is available on 2CD or 4LP vinyl and compiles the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, era-appropriate live recordings, and even the rough tracks from Pavement’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. Altogether, it features 28 unreleased tracks and 45 tracks in total.

Tool / Fear Inoculum (5LP vinyl box set)

Limited edition vinyl package of Tool’s critically acclaimed album, Fear Inoculum. The package features five black vinyl records with album tracks featured on Side A, and etchings on Side B. The records are packaged in a hard shell box with new album art, and a bound casebook holding the vinyl along with previously unseen imagery. Amazing or absurd? You decide!

Tin Machine / Tin Machine II (crystal clear / turquoise vinyl)

The second and final Tin Machine album is a bit more ‘Bowie’ than the first, with a quirky production and some great songs including ‘Shopping For Girls’, ‘Goodbye Mr Ed’, ‘You Belong in Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and the Roxy Music cover ‘If There Is Something’. It’s not perfect – the Hunt Sales-sung ‘Stateside’ is probably the low point – but the Edward Bell artwork (he did Scary Monsters) lifts what is a more ‘artier’ outing that the first album. You can pick up this limited edition repress atvia the SDE shop, using this link or the button below, although beware that stock is now very limited.

Saturday Deluxe / 2 April 2022

“Loads” of a-ha reissues in the pipeline, including Hunting High and Low.

In a Q&A posted on the band’s website, a-ha manager Harald Wiik confirms extensive reissue plans. Fan Joanna Kowalska asked Wiik if there are “any plans for more deluxe editions of past albums (Analogue, Foot of the Mountain)” and the manager responded as follows:

“Yes. Loads. A vinyl box of the first 5 albums as well as a 6 album super deluxe Hunting High and Low is in the works. We are also working on deluxe editions of Analogue and Foot of the Mountain.”

Wiik also confirmed that there will be vinyl reissues of Memorial Beach and Analogue. While he didn’t mention 1990’s East of the Sun West of the Moon specifically, it is highly likely that album will be reissued on vinyl at the same time as Memorial Beach since, for unknown reasons, those two did not get the vinyl treatment when the CD deluxe editions came out in 2015.

It is surprising to hear that a super deluxe of Hunting High and Low is in the works. A very good 2CD deluxe was issued in 2010 and a 30th anniversary 4CD+DVD super deluxe edition in 2015 felt like the last word on that album with a tremendous amount of mixes, demos and video material. SDE spoke to Bill Inglot at the time, the veteran consultant who helped to put that set together.

No timeline was shared for these reissues and later this year the band will release their 11th studio album, True North.

John Lydon says new Sex Pistols best of is “substandard”

Unhappy with Danny Boyle’s plans to use the Sex Pistols music in the forthcoming Pistol dramatisation on Hulu/Disney+, John Lydon sued his old bandmates and lost.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he’s also not thrilled with The Original Recordings, a companion ‘best of’ which was announced this week, and he has turned his ire on Universal Music. His official twitter account had the following to say:

A follow up tweet also added that Lydon “and his team were not involved in producing this compilation and consider it substandard compared to previous Universal releases since 2012”.

You can read more about The Original Recordings here.

George Michael’s ‘Younger’

If you follow SDE on twitter or Facebook, you may have seen a post yesterday where we reported that “the forthcoming Older reissue will feature a themed collection of unheard George Michael demos, collected under the ‘Younger’ moniker”.

Sadly, as I’m sure you probably worked out all by yourself, this was an April Fools jape, although if Sony ever want to pinch the idea, they are welcome to it!

Read about Older reissue speculation here.

I’m pleased to confirm that this CD single is limited to just 500 copies, so if you are interested then head over to the SDE shop via this link or just use the button below to place your order directly!

ABBA / Album Box Set

A new ‘complete’ ABBA albums box set will be issued in May with both CD and vinyl formats available. This 10-disc package has been updated to include their chart-topping Voyage album and also features a bonus disc of non-album singles and B-sides.

There’s a 10LP black vinyl edition and a 10CD set. The 180g vinyl edition is said to “mirror the spec” of the previously released The Studio Albums vinyl box, although that was an 8LP set (no bonus album or, of course, Voyage) and was coloured vinyl rather than black, so it mirrors the spec apart from when it doesn’t.

The ‘Vinyl Album Box Set’ contains 10 vinyl records – All the albums & a bonus disc

There are no extra tracks on the albums themselves and the actual 10-track bonus disc is not a comprehensive round-up, constricted no doubt by the running time of the vinyl record. The 2008 The Albums CD box set had a 17-track bonus disc, by comparison.

The CD box set comes with a 40-page booklet while the vinyl box doesn’t include any booklet, despite its £190 price tag in the UK! All the albums are also being issued on vinyl picture disc, although they are only available via Universal/ABBA channels (Sound of Vinyl etc.).

Both CD and vinyl boxes are issued on May 27 2022 via Polydor/UMC.

Prince and the Revolution Live / new official box set

Prince and The Revolution’s 30 March 1985 live concert from the Carrier Dome, Syracuse – which was part of his 1985 Purple Rain tour – will be issued as a standalone release in June.

The spectacular two-hour set was beamed into millions of homes via satellite at the time and features a ridiculously great setlist, including classic hits such as ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘1999’, ‘Little Red Corvette’, ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Purple Rain’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’; superb B-sides like ‘Irresistible Bitch’ and ‘How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore’; and choice album cuts. In fact, Prince plays the whole of Purple Rain, with the concert ending with side two of that 1984 in sequence.

This performance was issued, in full, on DVD as part of Warner Music’s four-disc deluxe edition of Purple Rain in 2017. That previous edition only offered stereo sound and reasonable, but not outstanding, visuals. Sony (who now have the rights) have gone to town on the new editions.

The 2CD+blu-ray edition of Prince and the Revolution Live is a large format package (click image to enlarge)

The two formats are 2CD+blu-ray and a 3LP vinyl edition. The audio for both has been entirely remixed from the original two-inch multi-tracks. Obviously, the triple vinyl offers the newly remixed sound just in stereo but the blu-ray additionally delivers both Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound.

For the blu-ray, the picture is said to have been “newly restored” although since this wasn’t shot on film it remains to be seen how good this will actually look.

After the initially extortionate price-tag (in the UK, at least) on the Welcome 2 America box, it’s good to see some sensible pricing with this new release. The 2CD+blu-ray a tad over £20 in the UK and even the 3LP vinyl set a not unreasonable £42. Not including a blu-ray with the vinyl set is a bit strange though, it has to be said.

Prince and The Revolution: Live will be available on 3 June 2022, via Sony Music Catalog.

The Associates / Sulk 40th anniversary deluxe with SDE-exclusive CD single

In July, BMG will issue a special large format 3CD+vinyl LP 40th anniversary deluxe edition of The Associates‘ 1982 album Sulk.

Formed in Dundee, Scotland in 1979, The Associates were comprised of vocalist Billy Mackenzie and multi-instrumentalist Alan Rankine. Built on an eclectic mix of influences and interests ranging from art rock to glam and disco, the duo found early success with their debut record The Affectionate Punch in 1981.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGtw9_XeIss

Sulk was the band’s second studio album and was the last to feature Rankine and Mackenzie. It peaked at number 10 in the UK album charts and featured both of The Associates’ two British top 20 hits: ‘Party Fears Two’ and ‘Club Country’. It is regarded as the group’s definitive statement and the album was voted the album of the year by Melody Maker at the time. Billy Mackenzie recalled before his death in 1997, “Sulk was a real liberation. It had the essence of what I’m about. I realised I could create my own sunshine”.

The forthcoming deluxe celebration of Sulk is a large format (12″x12″) ‘book pack’ which features three CDs and a blue vinyl LP. The three CDs include the original album (2016 remaster), out-takes, monitor mixes, rarities, Peel sessions plus a previously unheard live show from Gigant in the Netherlands from 1981. The set also includes the original album remastered on 140g blue vinyl. In total, the new deluxe offers 13 previously unreleased tracks.

This deluxe reissue features exclusive sleeve notes from Simon Reynolds with interviews from Alan Rankine, Michael Dempsey, Mike Hedges & Martha Ladly plus previously unseen photography by Derek Reid, Tom Sheehan & Eveline Dröge.

Exclusively for SDE, and available only from the SDE shop, all orders of this Sulk 40th anniversary deluxe edition come with a limited edition FREE 6-track CD single of the classic ‘Party Fears Two‘. This is the first time this song has been issued as a physical CD single and the track listing is as follows:

  1. Party Fears Two (7″)
  2. Party Fears Two (Album Version)
  3. Party Fears Two (Remix)
  4. Party Fears Two (Instrumental)
  5. I Never Will (Demo)
  6. It’s Better This Way (original B-side version)
All orders of the Sulk deluxe via the SDE shop come with an exclusive ‘Party Fears Two’ CD single!

The Sulk 40th anniversary deluxe edition will be released on 15 July 2022 (was 13 May). You can pre-order the exclusive edition with the CD single only via the SDE shop using this link or the button below. A blue vinyl edition is also available (not via SDE) and the official artist store is offering a special gold cassette with the deluxe edition.

Sex Pistols / The Original Recordings

Universal Music Catalogue (UMC) will issue The Original Recordings, a new Sex Pistols compilation, in May.

The ‘best of’ ties in with Danny Boyle’s dramatisation Pistol, which is based on Steve Jones’s memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol and comes to Hulu/Disney+ on 31 May, four days after The Original Recordings is released.

Pistol has of course already proved very controversial, with drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones having to sue John Lydon in order to allow Boyle the right to use the Sex Pistols music. Lydon lost the case, with the judge ruling that Jones and Cook were allowed to overrule him using a majority rule which was part of a longstanding band agreement.

The Original Recordings issued on CD, vinyl and cassette. Their are five tapes with different cover designs (click image to enlarge)

The forthcoming compilation features 20 of the Sex Pistol’s recordings from 1976 to 1978, including ‘Anarchy In The UK’, ‘God Save The Queen’, ‘Pretty Vacant’ and ‘Holidays In The Sun’. It also features some B-sides and ends with Sid Vicious’ attempt at ‘My Way’ from The Great Rock & Roll Swindle soundtrack album.

It will be released on CD, double black vinyl with five (count ’em) cassettes available via D2C (direct-to-consumer) channels. There are also two different coloured vinyl editions (green and yellow).

The Original Recordings will be released on 27 May 2022.

Neil Young to issue three Official Bootleg Series releases

There’s no sign of any let up in Neil Young’s current reissue/release productivity, with the announcement of three new albums in his ‘Official Bootleg Series’.

These are Royce Hall, 1971, a solo acoustic gig which was recorded on 30 January of that year on the UCLA (University of California) campus; Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971, another solo acoustic performance and the last US show of his 1971 solo tour; and, perhaps most excitingly, Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line), an On The Beach-heavy set from New York City, 1974.

‘Revolution Blues’ from Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line)

If you are wondering about the audio quality, the message from the label is that “where analogue tape exists in Young’s archive, these concerts have been mixed properly, providing much higher quality recordings than have previously existed”.

This is the case for both Royce Hall and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 1971 (i.e. they are both from the original analogue masters). If no tape exists, the original bootleg has been restored and remastered to make it sound as good as possible. This as is the case with Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line). Songs from all three releases are on this post.

‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ from Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971

The original bootleg artwork has also been replicated wherever possible, offering a bit of amateurish authenticity which conjures the era they were first created in. These either looks really cool or a bit rubbish, depending on your point of view…

All three albums will be released on vinyl and CD on 6 May 2022 via Reprise Records.

‘Journey Through The Past’ from Royce Hall, 1971

George Michael ‘Older’ reissue details emerge

A listing on Rough Trade’s online shop in the USA confirms that the reissue of George Michael’s 1996 album Older is definitely happening this year and also offers some specifics.

Team GM told the world last May to expect something “very special” in 2021, regarding Older. We waited, but nothing happened. Then on 1 January 2022, the official George Michael account tweeted that “2022 marks an exciting year for George and his music and we can’t wait to share it all with you”.

Yesterday, two product listings appeared for the Older reissue on Rough Trade in the USA. They are as follows:

  • A “limited super deluxe edition” box set of Older that includes five CDs, three vinyl LPs, three 12-inch art prints and a 12-inch 48-page book called The Story of Older which has “contributions from key people who helped make the album”.
  • A 2LP vinyl edition of Older. This is a gatefold edition pressed on 180g vinyl, with the audio “beautifully remastered from the original tapes”.
The 8-disc Older super deluxe edition is listed on Rough Trade US at $233

There are no other formats listed, although clearly there will be other formats, which are likely to include a single CD remaster, and a vinyl-free, multi-disc CD package.

Let’s talk about that big super deluxe edition box set. For the first time, the album is pressed across two vinyl records which makes a lot of sense when you consider it’s only a minute or so short of a one hour running time. The third vinyl record in the box set is Upper, the bonus disc from the 2CD Older & Upper special edition that was released in December 1997, a full 19 months after the original album. Upper is only a six-track offering; it includes two non-album tracks – ‘You Know That I Want To’ and ‘Safe’ – radio versions of ‘Star People ’97’ and ‘The Strangest Thing ’97’ plus remixes of ‘Fastlove’ and ‘Spinning The Wheel’. It only has a running time of 28 minutes so it’s more like an EP, if we are being honest, so there would be scope to expand it, although I have a feeling that won’t be the case. The original CD had “interactive elements” which were very much a product of the time (lo res music videos, weblinks etc.).

What is more curious is the content on the five CDs in the box set. If we assume Older & Upper make up two of them, that still leaves three CDs for other content. While there were plenty of remixes at the time (particularly of Star People ’97) there definitely isn’t enough to fill three-and-a-half CDs worth. The Unplugged concert would have been perfect for this reissue but George inexplicably included that with the 2017 Listen Without Prejudice reissue which rules it out for Older. Fans will be hoping that George’s Estate have sanctioned some unreleased material (demos, alternative takes etc.) but that remains be to seen. It’s possible that one of the ‘CDs’ could well be a DVD or blu-ray (featuring promos, TV appearances, etc.) and is simply listed incorrectly on Rough Trade.

The 2LP vinyl edition is likely to be very popular

Even if the box does include a DVD or blu-ray element, I’d be very surprised if a surround sound edition of the album is offered in the big box. George had showed zero interest in ‘spatial audio’ with both Faith and LIsten Without Prejudice. The other point to make is that because the limited super deluxe edition has appeared on Rough Trade, we can conclude that it is not going to be exclusive to any George Michael online shop.

The super deluxe edition box set is listed at $233 in the USA – £177 at today’s exchange rate. That’s more than three times more expensive that the priciest edition (3CD+DVD) of Listen Without Prejudice. I’m still expecting a product that hits the £50-£70 price point (deluxe CD set, for example).

The fact that these details for Older have leaked, suggests an announcement is highly likely within the next week or so. There are no pre-order links available at this time except for the Rough Trade US listing for the 2LP set (the super deluxe is listed as ‘sold out’ which clearly isn’t the case, but there you go). Best advice is probably to wait until other retailers have this listed, when it’s officially announced, before committing to anything.

The Older reissue is slated for 8 July 2022, but that could well change. More information when we have it.

The Rolling Stones / El Mocambo 1977

The Rolling Stones‘ secret gig at Toronto’s El Mocambo club in March 1977 is to be released officially for the first time next month.

The band played two shows in the tiny 300-capacity venue on the 4th and 5th of March ’77 and the audio is being issued across a 2CD set and as a 4LP vinyl package. Both formats feature the whole performance from the second date, with three bonus tracks from the 4 March gig, all newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain.

The 23 tracks include Muddy Waters’ ‘Mannish Boy,’ Bo Diddley’s ‘Crackin’ Up’, ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’, ‘Tumbling Dice’, Willie Dixon’s ‘Little Red Rooster’, the live debut of ‘Worried About You’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, ‘Hot Stuff’ and many more.

The release date for El Mocambo is 13 May 2022. The vinyl set is pretty expensive although Amazon France is significantly cheaper than most.
