Close Up with Suzanne Vega

Around 10 years ago, Suzanne Vega’s Close-Up Series saw the singer-songwriter re-record swathes of her back catalogue and release newly-curated volumes of re-interpretations stripped of their original productions. Four volumes were issued: Love Songs and People and Places (both in 2010), States of Being (2011) and Songs of Family (2012). These were primarily CD releases, although limited black vinyl pressings were issued at the time.

Today, a special coloured vinyl 4LP vinyl deluxe set is released and SDE recently caught up with Suzanne to ask her about the initiative.

SDE: What was your original thinking behind starting the Close-Up series? Was it financial, artistic, or was it just about getting some control back over over your songs?

Suzanne Vega: It was all three of those. And it had a lot to do with the timing. Because my relationship with A&M had come to an end in the early 2000s, which I sort of knew would happen. But I had been enjoying what turned out to be a very short-lived relationship with Blue Note Records. I loved Blue Note, I love being part of Blue Note – I had a great time there. But I had an album, one album [with them], that came out and won a Grammy and then I was dropped! [laughs]. I mean, this was after [just] two years, which was a shock. I think that happened in 2008. So I was left there and didn’t really have the heart to go hunting around for a new major label deal. At that point, I think Facebook had just gotten started and I wasn’t in the mood to write a bunch of new songs and try and figure out where the audience was, so I thought if I start my own label and re-record the older songs, this will give me a bit of a catalogue for the new label. My goal at that point was 100,000 people on Facebook that I could market to and get to know through social media. And now we’ve far surpassed all of that. Amanuensis [the name of the Suzanne’s label], has been up and running, I think, since 2011. And it’s doing great every year, there’s a profit and I’m very happy with it.

What were the challenges, when it came to starting your own label? Obviously, there’s a lot of things involved in doing that. Did you get to grips with it quite easily?

I got the gist of it quite easily, because I had a manager who had done it before. I had been watching Aimee Mann’s career, and Michael Hausman, who was my manager then, helped her to set up her label. I saw how well it worked, so I knew he would be able to do that for me. And so that worked out pretty well. No, the only difficult thing, I suppose, was the actual re-recording. I found myself just getting a cold sometimes, you know, that sort of thing. And [Irish guitarist and former Bowie MD] Gerry Leonard and I worked out the newer, more intimate, more acoustic arrangements. But all that was a pleasure, really. And it was great finding a theme for each CD. That was a lot of fun. And so overall, it was terrific.

But did you have any hesitation, because you are unpicking the original art, if you like, which is a sequenced album where you wrote the songs, you chose the order of the songs on the record, a record which tells some kind of a story. In effect, with this Close-Up series of releases, you’re kind of unravelling that. Did you think much about that in terms of the relationship between the original and the re-recordings and how fans might view one against the other?

Yes, I thought a lot about it, actually. In fact, I was thinking of it again, recently, when Taylor Swift made the choice to re-record all of her albums. I really felt there was no point in trying to re-record the albums as we had done them.

I really felt there was no point trying to re-record the albums as we had done them

Suzanne Vega

First of all, my career is very long. I mean, I have decades of work to look back on. And not only that, but the some of the work that I’ve done with the various producers has been very idiosyncratic. The work I did with Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake [1992’s 99.9F°], have all kinds of odd sounds, breaths, double tracking, you know, odd moments that just happen spontaneously, so there was no way I was going to be able to re-record that. Not to mention that we had all these musicians… We used musicians from The Attractions on 99.9, and also Jerry Marotta, who had worked with Peter Gabriel. So I didn’t want to recreate all of that; I felt that all of that existed, and that was great. I really wanted to introduce people to the newer material, because people gravitate towards the first two albums. Therefore, for the Close-Up Vol 2 album, you get ‘Luka’ and you get ‘Tom’s Diner’, but you get a lot of other newer material too. It really meant a lot to me to have the fans hear the new newer material as well as the old.

I have the CD box and you say in the notes that these re-recordings are a “gift to fans”. What did you mean by that?

I meant, for example, that it’s obvious that these are not meant for mainstream airplay, or they’re not going to go top 10 or top 40. These are reinterpretations that are very intimate. And it’s it’s not just that the songs are intimate and that the arrangements are intimate. The way Joe Blaney engineered the music – especially if you listen to it through earbuds or airpods – you feel as though I’m singing into your ear directly. So I really am there in the room with you. And to me, it’s what I always got from Leonard Cohen’s recordings, the sense of intimacy and the sense that he was singing to me, alone. Leonard Cohen is not a guy who had top 40 hits here in America, but that never mattered to me. So that’s what I meant by a gift to the fans… The sense of intimacy and the sense of ‘this is for you’. I am now singing to you and to you alone in your room.

John Lennon once said he wanted to re-record all The Beatles songs over again, and I think that’s very much an artistic trait. People sometimes look back at their work and wish they’d done it slightly differently. Did you enjoy the process of having a second stab certain songs, and maybe taking some of the production away? Perhaps removing an era-specific element to the sound and making them a bit more timeless?

Yeah, I suppose there’s an element that I enjoyed, but I also have to say, I really stand by the original recordings, as well. I think that ‘Luka’ as a hit single really works on the Solitude Standing album, but it also really works as a more intimate, folkier song. So I didn’t mean it as a correction. A song like ‘Blood Makes Noise’, I think the original is is just a unique piece of production that we couldn’t recreate, even if we had tried. The one song I thought really came into its own was a newer song called ‘Bound’ from the Beauty and Crime album. That one had a lot of production on it, and when you strip it down to just the guitar, it’s very poignant, I think, and very kind of haunting. That’s one where I feel the production being stripped away really revealed the song.

The Close-Up version of ‘Luka’

Regardless of the nature your relationship was with A&M, I noticed that they weren’t really doing anything with your catalogue. Were you unhappy that they weren’t working it and putting out expanded boxsets and the like, or did you not want that to happen in the first place?

I saw the writing on the wall. A lot of it is the backstage politics. You know, once [co-founder] Jerry Moss had sold A&M, it really wasn’t A&M anymore. The logo still existed, but it wasn’t Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert [anymore]. Once they were gone, I had to work with Jimmy Iovine, and he is a completely different guy with different tastes, different values. So I saw the writing on the wall, and I knew that I would be dropped, sooner or later. Not that he was a bad guy, but he wasn’t going to promote anything I did. That wasn’t his priority. So that’s how I felt. A&M in its prime was a great label, and it was really an artist’s label. When I got dropped from A&M, I contacted Jerry Moss and I said, “I just want to say thank you for the years that I spent on your label”. I got to do exactly what I wanted, whenever I wanted to and it was great. We had a great lunch where I got to express thanks. And we left it at that.

But even 15 or 20 years later, they weren’t really doing anything with your back catalogue. The original albums are all still in print, I think, on CD, but they weren’t releasing anniversary editions, which would have been the obvious thing to do…

I noticed that, but I also noticed that whenever I came out with something on my own label, sometimes they would put out a rival product, and I was like, you know, why can’t we work together? If you’ll help me, I’ll help you. If you put out a product, I’ll help you. If you give me an advance, I’ll do some promotion for you. But they didn’t even want to talk about it. So that put me in the weird position of having to rival myself. And my old product. So I thought that was a bit silly, and I still think it is a bit silly. It’s such a changing world, because I know now that people are trying to get their masters back and I’m trying to figure out if I should try and fight them to get my masters back? Or do I just take the pittance that they throw at you to make you go away? [laughs]. I’m at that moment now where I’m trying to decide which way to go.

A&M don’t want to work together. They’ve made that clear.

Suzanne Vega

Reissues and back catalogue is quite big business now, so it’s an obvious thing to do, to work with them to put out some box sets and things, I guess.

Yeah, but they don’t really want to work together. They’ve sort of made that clear. So it’s either I get my masters back and then do what I want with them, or take the money that they offer and relinquish any say in the matter. Many of the really big names have there masters one way or the other, but most of us don’t. And they had language in the contract at the time of signing, that it was “work for hire”, foreseeing this day, when 35 years would have gone by. So they made it very difficult even back then. But you know, we’ll see. Times are changing. I sometimes think that the world is more artist-friendly now. And people are starting to understand the issues behind these things.

I’ve worked on a few projects for Universal Music and even though they often don’t have to, they do seem to try to get the artists involved, when when they can, which is quite a positive thing, I suppose.

Yeah, I think it is. So maybe that would work. But it’s all in flux – the whole business world is in flux in a way I never had imagined. Back in the mid-80s, when I signed my record deal, I thought there were rules and laws and things were done a specific way. It’s really more that things change and the laws change to accommodate the times. No one could have foreseen that the the advent of the MP3 for example, which kind of brought down the whole industry. No one saw that coming. And so the laws have changed, because the laws have to change and maybe they’ll continue to change in the artist’s favour.

I wanted to ask you, Suzanne, about life on a major label, because you were commercially very successful in the early part of your career. You’ve experienced both things: major label, global success and now obviously you’ve now got your own label, which is a smaller operation. One of the things that people always say, is that “I may have been earning more money in those days, but I would never swap it for the kind of freedom that I’ve got today”. You know, “I might sell less records, but I’m happier’. Does that apply to you?

Yeah, I’d say that a lot of that is true. I mean, I loved being successful. It was a thrill. And it was great being successful in that way. You know, I sold five million albums before I was 30 years old, which I can’t deny, was thrilling. And I liked my relationship with A&M. But at the same time, I wasn’t attached to the lifestyle. I love performing, I love touring and I like playing to big audiences. And I also love playing to small audiences. I think I always knew that I wasn’t really cut out to be a top 40 artist – that was never my goal. The goal was to write songs; to write the kinds of songs that I like to write; to make my living doing it; and to find an audience that like me for who I was. And sometimes the audience is big, and sometimes it’s small. So that’s how I see it. And to be honest, I’m very happy with with my career, I do I have total freedom, and I can do what I like.

Back to Close-Up. When you first started, had you mapped out all the themes for the four albums, or did you just do one record and think, let’s see how it goes?

No, I had a spreadsheet for the four albums. I had laid it all out from the very beginning.

And did you have any ‘rules’? Some of them are quite acoustic, while others –  I’m thinking of ‘Ironbound/Fancy Poultry’ on Vol 2 – have more sophisticated arrangements. Did you have any hard and fast rules or were you just adapting it to how each song needs to be arranged?

I adapted it according to how each song needed to be arranged. ‘Ironbound’ is a very difficult song for me to play, personally, on the guitar. So there were days where it was just easier to have Gerry [Leonard] do everything [laughs]. Because ‘Ironbound’ was written with a sort of ‘F’ chord shape, with the syncopation, and I just couldn’t always get it together to do that. And Gerry’s got a great range. You know, he can play folky acoustic music, he’s very Irish in that way. But he can also rock out and really do whatever is needed. So I just I tried to keep the mood intimate, even if the actual production wasn’t always just acoustic guitar.

I’m guessing the more ‘produced’ some of the songs became, maybe the less fun it was, because the whole point was to kind of keep it relatively simple?

No, no, the other ones were fun too. ‘Blood Makes Noise’ was fun. And I think even the sort of quasi remix version of ‘Tom’s Diner’ was fun. All of it was fun. It was all really cool.

The Close-Up version of Blood Makes Noise is on Vol 3

I’ve seen you a live a few times and your voice is in great shape. I’m assuming you didn’t really have too many issues, singing songs that you recorded, in some cases, over 25 years ago?

Well, interestingly, I’m a person whose voice gets better the more I tour, so I’m pretty good at the beginning of a tour, but I’m even better in the middle of it, or near the end. The problem I had was that I kept getting colds, for some reason. And so that sometimes made it difficult sing. I think there’s a couple of spots… I can’t remember if it’s ‘In Liverpool’ where I clearly have a cold and we kept the vocal anyway [laughs]. So that was the only issue. I could sing great, as long as I wasn’t having the dreaded cold.

Obviously, these all came out on CD originally. It probably would have been really expensive to do vinyl on your own fledgling label back then, and there wasn’t the ‘vinyl revival’ at that time anyway. But what do you what do you make of vinyl? Is this a preferred medium for you? Or are you just giving the marketplace what it wants at this moment in time?

Well, it’s not really a preferred medium for me. I grew up with vinyl but I’m not really picky about my choice of how I listen to music. I listened to vinyl back in the day, but I also had a transistor radio when I was eight or nine and thought that was the coolest thing ever. And it was totally compressed and probably sounded like garbage to most people. But you know, you could get the lyrics, you can get the rhythm, and back then there was nothing cooler than to walk down the street with holding it up to your ear. So I’m not one of these people who needs like all my components and the subwoofers and the tweeters and everything to be perfect. I just grab it where I can get it [laughs], basically.

That’s a good quote! [laughs] Do you still buy physical music? Do you still think physical music is important? Or do you not think the medium is that important?

I do. I still think that the medium is important. I still like CDs. I still like albums. If I really love someone, I’ll buy the CD because I’ll always have some kind of CD player around that I can listen to it [on]. I think it’s important not just listen to someone’s singles, but to figure out what what the larger statement is.

What do you make of the vinyl revival then? In many ways, it’s quite positive, isn’t it? Because in some cases you’ve got kids that might have illegally downloaded or may have been happy to listen to music on YouTube…They’re now going out buying the physical product.

I love it. I think it’s great. I remember when my daughter was in college hearing that people were having listening parties where you would get together and actually enact the ritual of putting the vinyl on and listening to the first side and then turning it over and listening to the second side. And to me, that’s that’s pretty cool.

I went on Spotify and had a look at Luka, and compared how many plays the Close-Up version has had versus the original version. The original’s got 40 million, which is very impressive, but the Close-Up version has had 25 million, which is also very impressive.

That’s great.

Now I’m the record label owner, I get a significantly bigger percentage

Suzanne Vega

I’m not expecting you to give me detail or anything, but what difference does that make to you? Your new version, the one you own, that has 25 million plays. If it didn’t exist then you wouldn’t have got your extra cut, whatever it is. Is that meaningful? Because everyone always says with Spotify you get 0.00 whatever percent it may be, per play?

First of all, I’m just happy spiritually, to know that 25 million people listened to my [new] version of it, you know, I’m just happy to have made that connection, I think that’s really great. That’s much more than I had expected when I recorded it. I was thinking of it as something smaller. But the other thing that affects the bank account is that now I’m the record label owner, so I get a significantly bigger percentage. I think I get up to 60%. I don’t get whatever you get if you’re just the artist. I shouldn’t really talk without knowing my facts, but I don’t know the actual percentages. But I do know if you’re the record label, you get a lot more than just what you get as the artist. So there is some of that money is trickling its way to me in some form. So for that I’m thankful.

What’s next for you?

Oh, a couple of things. One is that I made a film of the play that I wrote about the life and work of Carson McCullers. So I am having a world premiere at South by Southwest. So that’s kind of the immediate thing that I’m all wrapped up in, I’ve been helping to design the poster for that. And then after that, I want to write a bunch of songs and come out with a new album –  hopefully sometime next year. That’s what I’m aiming for and hoping for.

Is the Close-Up series finished? Is that now a closed book?

No, no, I always had intended to reinterpret it, maybe continue with different volumes, so I don’t think of it as a closed issue. But in the meantime, I’m also doing new material and releasing that. And then, you know, maybe at some point, I could do re-releases. Yeah, it’ll be a fun project, pretty much for the rest of my life, the way I see it.

Suzanne Vega was talking to Paul Sinclair for SDE. The Close-Up 4LP coloured vinyl box set is out today. It’s sold out in the UK but is still available internationally.

The Who / My Generation & A Quick One half-speed mastered vinyl

The Who’s first two albums are to be reissued as half-speed mastered vinyl editions.

Their debut, My Generation, peaked at number five in the UK charts and launched the band with songs like the title track, ‘The Kids are Alright’ and ‘The Ox’.

A Quick One was The Who’s second album and was issued in 1966

The follow up, A Quick One, came out in 1966, and includes ‘Boris The Spider’, ‘Don’t Look Away’ and ‘A Quick One While He’s Away’ (which was performed at the Rolling Stones’ Rock N Roll Circus).

The mastering is by long time Who engineer Jon Astley, but the half-speeds have been cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road. As usual, these come with original artwork, an OBI-strip and certificate of authenticity.

Both titles are released on 6 May 2022.

Purple Zone is written by Soft Cell and produced by the Pet Shop Boys and Dave Ball. Neil Tennant contributes vocals and both him and Chris Lowe feature in the video.

The good news is that physical formats have been announced. There’s a four-track CD single and a four-track 12-inch vinyl. The latter has two Pet Shop Boys remixes not available on the CD. The bad news – that might elicit a Purple Groan – is that there is a glacial wait, until November, for these to be released. Not just the vinyl, CD fans still have to wait as well, even though the delay is of course largely to do with vinyl production logjams. These physical formats don’t appear to be available via standard retail channels, by the way.

Purple Zone is released on 11 November 2022, six months after the album which is out on 6 May!

Trevor Horn remixes Seal’s debut

Trevor Horn has created a Dolby Atmos mix of Seal’s 1991 eponymous debut album.

Seal was a major success, reaching number one in the UK charts and delivering Seal a transatlantic top 10 hit in ‘Crazy’. A US-only CD+DVD set was re-released in 2005, which includes a 5.1 mix. Unfortunately, this isn’t easy to get hold of and is never cheap. A ‘proper’ reissue is long overdue.

The Dolby Atmos remix was created at PMC Studio London at the invitation of Heff Moraes, the studio’s manager. Horn said the biggest issue was locating the original multi-track tapes

When it came to remixing the Seal album, Trevor is quoted as saying that the biggest problem was getting hold of the original multitrack recordings. “It took a lot of time to track down the original tapes,” he said. “We eventually found most of them, and what we didn’t have we worked around by using 5.1 mixes or live recordings.”

This is a curious statement, because the multi-tracks must have been digitised in 2005 for the 5.1 mix and it would be surprising if these digital files had gone missing completely. The other question is which ‘version’ of the album has been remixed for spatial audio? As many fans are aware, the original mix of the album that was put out into the marketplace in early 1991 (generally known as the ‘premix’ edition) was quickly superseded by a version that offered different mixes/edits of ‘Wild’, ‘Violet’ and ‘Crazy’. There is no way to tell the difference between these other than by playing them.

The bigger question is whether this work signals a major physical reissue, which has been rumoured for some time. The article about this remix in Music Radar ends by saying “The Dolby Atmos version of Seal will be available soon through streaming services” but makes no mention of a physical reissue. May 2022 is actually the 31st anniversary of the long-player.

Of course, one would hope that any CD box set would include a blu-ray with the Dolby Atmos mix, but stranger things have happened…

The Tipping Point / Blu-ray Audio

Tears For Fears / The Tipping Point blu-ray

As you may have seen, we have managed to make available an extra 500 copies of the xPropaganda The Heart Is Strange blu-ray audio available before we go to production. I was gratified to see a very positive reaction to this.

As a result, quite a few of you have asked if we might be able to make more copies of the Tears For Fears The Tipping Point blu-ray available, which is not an unreasonable question, given the original sold out in 24 hours. The most straightforward answer to that question – at the moment – is ‘I don’t know’. There are a number of issues involved. The most fundamental question is do the record label and the band want to sign off on making some more. But also, since this was marketed as a limited edition of 2,000 units, would it be fair just to produce some more?

So I would like to ask you, SDE readers, Tears For Fears fans and blu-ray purchasers, a question. What do YOU think the best solution is? And I’m asking this question both to people who missed out and people who bought the Tears For Fears blu-ray the first time around. If we assume SDE would be allowed to sell some more, I think there are two main paths:

  1. Simply produce some more copies, due to ‘unprecedented demand’, of the blu-ray, which is identical in every way to the original
  2. Create a new version of the blu-ray which includes Steven Wilson’s tremendous Dolby Atmos Mix but doesn’t include the 5.1 mix, thereby giving original blu-ray purchasers something unique. Perhaps we could enhance this second edition by including a stereo mix this time (which for various reasons we couldn’t do originally) and maybe even something like an instrumental version of the album (or some/all of the bonus tracks)

I would like to stress that this is not confirmation that ANYTHING will happen, but if we do get the opportunity then I’d be silly not to ask you, the audience. Please give your feedback using the poll below, which is a binary choice, but you can of course contribute more nuanced feedback via the comments (but complete the poll as well). Thanks! Paul.

Bonus audio stream included on the xPropaganda The Heart Is Strange blu-ray

When we announced the SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio of xPropaganda’s forthcoming album The Heart Is Strange, we confirmed two audio streams: a Stephen Lipson Dolby Atmos mix and a PCM Stereo version. I am now pleased to confirm that the blu-ray will also feature a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix!

Although the Dolby Atmos mix will fold down extremely well to 5.1 on receivers/amps that don’t feature Dolby Atmos decoding, having a dedicated 5.1 mix is definitely a very good thing and like the Atmos mix this has been creaated by Stephen Lipson. It is also exclusive to this physical blu-ray audio.

The reason this wasn’t mentioned at the time the blu-ray was announced was simply because we weren’t sure if Stephen Lipson was going to have time to do it. Thankfully, he did!

While this is great news for those who managed to pre-order the blu-ray, I’m aware plenty missed out since this was limited to just 1000 copies worldwide and many of you have been messaging me asking if we could make some more available. This hasn’t quite gone into production yet, so I have spoken to the powers that be at ZTT and UMC and have negotiated an extra 500 units. Let me stress this is not a second pressing, we are simply going to make an extra 500 to satisfying demand so that people don’t have to spend silly money on eBay listings like this one. This is still a highly limited product and this extra quantity will be despatched on or around the release date of 20 May 2022, just like the original 1000. We will endeavour to get yours to you as close to the day of release as possible (although that’s not a guarantee).

These are available exclusively via the SDE shop using this link or the buttons below – while stocks last! After Tears For Fears feedback, all postage is tracked, so expect to pay a little more for that service. In the spirit of fairness, these are limited to a maximum of two units per order (orders for more than two will be cancelled) and apologies but we cannot combine orders, so if you have placed a previous order it will be sent separately.

The Heart Is Strange is released on 20 May 2022. SDE currently has a competition running for you to win a ticket to a special xPropaganda playback event, in London, at the end of next week.

Neil Young / Official Release Series Vol 4

Next month, Neil Young will release Volume 4 of his occasional ‘Official Release Series’ box sets. The ORS series sees original albums remastered and reissued and this forthcoming box contains discs 13, 14, 20 & 21.

Those discs equate to the following albums from the 1980s: Hawks & Doves (1980), Re•ac•tor (1981), and This Note’s for You (1988), and the Eldorado EP (1989). The three albums are very different and fairly well known, although the Eldorado EP was only issued in Japan & Australia and sees Young backed by The Restless (Chad Cromwell and Rick Rosas) and features two tracks – ‘Cocaine Eyes’ and ‘Heavy Love’ – unavailable on any other album.

This box set is available as a 4LP vinyl set or as a 4CD package. SDE is expecting the latter to match the card wallet/vinyl replica packaging used for boxes two and three (and used for a limited edition version of volume one).

Official Release Series Vol 4 (Discs 13, 14, 20 & 21) will be released on 29 April 2022. We are making these boxes available to order via the SDE shop. Use this link or the buttons below, to pre-order. If you’re in the EU then be aware that be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK.

Arcade Fire / WE

Arcade Fire will release WE, their sixth studio, album in May.

The album was produced by Nigel Godrich, Win Butler and Régine Chassagne and was recorded in multiple locations, including New Orleans, El Paso and Mount Desert Island.

According to Win, it’s “the longest we’ve ever spent writing, uninterrupted, probably ever” and we are told that the 40-minute album is “as much about the forces that threaten to pull us away from the people we love, as it is inspired by the urgent need to overcome them”.

It’s an album of seven songs and two halves. Side 1 is dubbed “I” and channels “the fear and loneliness of isolation”. The flipside (“WE”) expresses “the joy and power of reconnection”.

The first single, ‘The Lightning I, II’ starts the “WE” side of the album and signals a return to form. You can listen to it and watch the video (directed by Emily Kai Bock), above.

The album’s cover is a photograph of a human eye by the artist JR evokes Sagittarius A*, and has been airbrush colour-tinted by Terry Pastor (who did the same thing for David Bowie’s Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust covers).

The WE album is available on CD and vinyl. Amazon have an exclusive marbled brown vinyl edition and indie stores get white vinyl (including JPC in Germany).

WE will be released on 6 May 2022 via Columbia Records.

Def Leppard / Diamond Star Halos

Def Leppard release a brand new album, Diamond Star Halos, in May.

Their first record since 2015’s Def Leppard, Diamond Star Halos is the band’s 12th studio long-player was recorded in the last two years with Ronan McHugh co-producing. The 15-track album includes singles new single ‘Kick’, future single ‘Fire It Up’ and features guest vocals from Alison Krauss on two tracks: ‘This Guitar’ and ‘Lifeless’.

The title name checks a lyric from T. Rex’s ‘Bang a Gong (Get It On)’ which is perhaps a hint that there are nods to not only T. Rex, but David Bowie, Mott The Hoople across the album. This is evident from ‘Kick’, which you can preview below.

In terms of formats, let’s start with the CD. You can opt for a standard jewel case with a black and white cover, although best to upgrade to the deluxe which comes in a proper gatefold card sleeve and a vibrant colour cover image with further illustrations within the gatefold. More importantly, the deluxe CD offers two bonus tracks: ‘Goodbye For Good This Time (Avant-garde Mix)’ and ‘Lifeless (Joe Only version)’. Note: there are two Japanese SHM-CD editions. One in the gatefold card sleeve (coloured cover) which has the same bonus tracks as above, but the other version is in a jewel case (black and white cover) and has two different – and exclusive – bonus tracks. They are: ‘Angels (Can’t Help You Now) – Stripped Version’ and ‘This Guitar – Joe Only Version’. You can’t get these two tracks anywhere else (the Target version in the USA has the same bonus tracks as the standard EU deluxe).

The deluxe CD edition of Diamond Star Halos (click image to enlarge)

Since it’s a fairly long record, it will come as no surprise to hear that on vinyl this is a 2LP set. The double vinyl opts for the black and white version of the cover used on the standard CD. A double clear vinyl edition is available 2LP picture disc version, boasting a die cut sleeve will also be available via D2C channels such as the official Def Leppard shop (they also have a cassette). Target in the USA have a red/yellow vinyl offering, which is repeated in the UK for HMV.

Diamond Star Halos will be released on 27 May 2022, a few weeks before Def Leppard kick of an enormous 36-date US stadium tour.

Howard Jones vinyl reissues

When Howard Jones’ first two albums – Human’s Lib and Dream into Action – were reissued by Cherry Red back in November 2018, the only copies available on LP were standalone coloured vinyl pressings (very limited at 1000 units each) and picture discs that were only available inside the super deluxe edition box sets.

Given that both box sets and the coloured vinyl are long out-of-print, the label have decided to reissue both albums on black vinyl, next month.

These will use the same remastered audio and are 140g pressings. They come with an inner sleeve containing rare photos plus notes and track-by-track annotation about each album as told to writer Anil Prasad.

You Might Like

Human’s Lib (1984) and Dream into Action (1985) were by far Jones’ most successful albums and delivered six out of seven of his UK top 10 hits (the one we’re not counting is ‘Like To Get To Know You Well’ which did reach the top 10 but was technically a non-album track in the UK, although it did turn up as a bonus track on the original CD of Dream into Action). LTGTKYW was on the album-proper in the USA which was quite different, losing ‘Speciality’ and also adding ‘Bounce Right Back’. As you’d expect the vinyl reissues stick to the UK version of the running order.

For some reason, these new vinyl pressings are currently very pricey on Amazon in the UK but I have a feeling those prices will come right down before release date.

Human’s Lib and Dream into Action are reissued on black vinyl on 29 April 2022.

Bill Bruford / Making a Song and Dance: A Complete Career Collection

Making a Song and Dance is a new 6CD box set highlighting the considerable career achievements of legendary drummer Bill Bruford.

A young Bruford came to prominence in the late ’60s with Yes, before joining King Crimson in the early 1970s and then going on to play live with a Gabriel-free Genesis in 1976. The period from 1975 to the early 80s saw albums by his band Bruford, a record with prog-rock supergroup U.K., and various collaborations, including with Swiss keyboardist Patrick Moraz and Chris Squire

Bill was back with King Crimson in the 1980s (he’d return for a third spell in the ’90s) and later in that same decade started the jazz fusion band Earthworks, who would go on to record five studio albums (three between 1987 and 1991).

There have been numerous appearances on other people’s records, including Roy Harper, Akira Inoue, Kazumi Watanabe, Steve Howe & many more.

Bill Bruford / Making a Song and Dance: A Complete Career Collection is a 6CD box (click image to enlarge)

The new box set tries to make sense of all this by offered themed CDs. So the first two are dubbed ‘The Collaborator’ and largely concern Bruford’s work with Yes and King Crimson. CDs 3 and 4 are titled ‘The Composing Leader’ (Bruford, Earthworks etc.) and CD 5 is called ‘The Special Guest’ and features some of those aforementioned appearances on other people’s albums. The sixth and final disc is ‘The Improviser’ and includes some of the Moraz-Bruford compositions and work with David Torn.

Bill Bruford himself has written a detailed biography which, along with rare photos, is featured in the booklet within the box. The outer box artwork, gatefold CDs and booklet have been designed by graphic designer Dave McKean.

Making a Song and Dance: A Complete Career Collection is released on 29 April via BMG. Very good price in Germany, right now.

Next batch of Roxy Music half-speed mastered vinyl

As revealed back in February, UMC/Virgin is issuing all eight Roxy Music albums as half-speed mastered pressings. The debut and For Your Pleasure are due at the beginning of April and now the next pair, 1973’s Stranded and Country Life from 1974, are available to pre-order, as well.

The former gave the band their first number one in the UK and features ‘Street Life’ and ‘Song For Europe’. The latter was the first Roxy Music album to break into the US top 40 and it includes ‘The Thrill Of It All’.

These new 2022 pressings are brand new half-speed versions cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road and the artwork for these has been ‘revised’ with lyrics and a “deluxe gloss laminated finish”.

Stranded and Country Life will both be reissued on 13 May 2022.

The Police Around The World product details confirmed

The format details for the previously advised The Police Around The World documentary reissue can now be confirmed. The film, previously only available on VHS and Laserdisc, follows the band on their first world tour in 1979 & 1980 offers a jovial glimpse of the band as they travel around the world and spotlights their visits to local sights between performances.

The reissue presents Around The World with restored picture and remastered audio and is available on three physical formats. The Blu-ray+CD edition offers the best picture quality (full HD) and the documentary offers complete performances of four songs as bonus features. There is also a DVD+CD edition with the same content for those that don’t want the visuals to look quite a good. Audio on the video formats is confirmed as stereo, 5.1 surround and DTS.

The blu-ray+CD combo of Around The World is likely to prove the most popular format.

There is a vinyl version which is actually paired with the DVD, rather than the blu-ray, and is this DVD+LP set with the vinyl record pressed on silver vinyl for North American, and blue for the rest of the world.

The audio on the CD and vinyl are live tracks recorded in Japan, Hong Kong & England during this world tour. There are nine on the vinyl record and 12 on the CD.

These three physical formats of Around The World will be released on 20 May 2022.

Sheryl Crow / Sheryl: Music From The Feature Documentary

Last week, Sheryl, a new feature-length documentary about Sheryl Crow by director Amy Scott premiered at SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin, Texas. The film is said to be “an intimate story of song and sacrifice… [that] navigates an iconic yet arduous musical career while the artist battles sexism, ageism, depression, cancer, and the price of fame, before harnessing the power of her gift”.

Sheryl is soon be shown on the Showtime network in the US and will undoubtedly end up elsewhere via Sky Atlantic/NowTV, Netflix or similar.

‘A Change Would Do You Good’ is one of 35 tracks on Sheryl: Music From The Feature Documentary

Universal haven’t missed the opportunity to release a companion album called Sheryl: Music From The Feature Documentary which features Crow’s biggest hits, including ‘If It Makes You Happy’, ‘Soak Up The Sun’, ‘All I Wanna Do’, ‘Every Day Is A Winding Road’, My Favorite Mistake’ and many more. In addition to the odd ‘deep cut’ and a few collaborations this new compilation includes three newly recorded songs: ‘Forever’, ‘Still The Same’ and ‘Live With Me’.

Physically, this new release is only available as a 2CD set. The lack of vinyl is undoubtedly due to vinyl production lead times, although record execs seem to hate releasing Sheryl Crow albums on vinyl, regardless. She’s released 11 studio albums and only four have ever been put out on vinyl (the 2018 Black Friday RSD blue vinyl of Tuesday Night Music Club, Be Myself, Home For Christmas and Threads). It’s crazy that the massively popular Sheryl Crow album from ’96 has never been issued on the format (or reissued, outside of the original era).

Sheryl: Music From The Feature Documentary will be released on 13 May 2022 (was 6 May).

T. Rex / Electric Warrior half-speed mastered vinyl

T. Rex’s classic 1971 album Electric Warrior is being reissued next month as a half-speed mastered vinyl pressing for a late in the day 50th anniversary celebration.

Released in September 1971, this album contains the singles ‘Get It On’ (#1 in the UK in July 1971) and ‘Jeepster’ (#2 in the UK in November ‘71). It was, of course, produced by Tony Visconti and was very much the beginning of Marc Bolan and T. Rex’s ‘imperial’ phase and 1972 would deliver two further number ones and The Slider album (see the details of Demon’s forthcoming box for more on 1972).

The half-speed mastered vinyl edition of Electric Warrior (click image to enlarge)

For the reissue the album has been half-speed mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road. It’s pressed on 180g vinyl and has been pressed at 33RPM so it’s still only one vinyl record. It comes with the usual Abbey Road-branded OBI strip and certificate.

This is a limited edition pressing. Don’t know what it is limited to, but the only reason we are not selling on the SDE shop is simply because Universal were unable to supply anything like a decent quantity. Buyer beware.

The Electric Warrior half-speed vinyl is released on 29 April 2021.
