The Art of Pink Floyd The Wall is a new book collecting Gerald Scarfe‘s iconic work for Pink Floyd‘s 1979 album.
This large-ish (258mm high x 359mm wide) landscape-format book is presented in a “stunning slipcase” designed by Scarfe and across its 288 pages are photos, drawings and designs which will incorporate the iconic imagery of The Wall, alongside new and previously unseen material.
The Art of Pink Floyd The Wall is published by Little Brown (in the UK) on 9 December 2021 (was 25 November) (was 4 November).
This November, Acid Jazz will release Gather Up, a career-spanning box set of music by comedic actor and musician Matt Berry. Available as a four-CD set or signed 5LP vinyl package, Gather Up is part ‘best of’ and part rarities collection and has been compiled by Berry himself.
Over 10 years with Acid Jazz Records Matt Berry has released nine incredibly diverse albums, including the tangled-folk rock thickets of Witchazel and Kill The Wolf, the out-there explorations of Music For Insomniacs, TV Themes’ retro-kitsch delights, the twilight grooves of The Small Hours, the classic pedal-steel songwriting of Phantom Birds and the psychedelic sounds on The Blue Elephant.
The four-CD and 5LP vinyl boxes contain the same audio, the only different being that the 21-track career-spanning ‘best of’ requires two records compared to one CD, incidentally single CD and 2LP releases of this selection are also available.

The third LP (or CD 2) is a selection of rare and never heard before outtakes. It includes cuts from Berry’s 2010 Myspace EP ‘Summer Sun’; outtakes from the Witchazel and The Blue Elephant albums; the ‘Catch Me In Time’ track featuring soul legend Geno Washington; a live radio session version of ‘Take My Hand’ featuring Cecilia Fage; embryonic versions of album tracks, and much more.
LP four (or CD 3), Phantom First, comprises demo recordings of some songs which did and did not evolve into the Phantom Birds album. Many of these involve different track titles and completely different lyrics with familiar melodies wrong-footing the listener.
Finally, Live At A Festivalwhich is LP 5 (or CD 4) features five songs recorded over three festivals in 2015, including The Green Man Festival in the Brecon Beacons.

The vinyl set comes with two original Matt Berry artwork prints, a 64-page hardcover book with sleeve notes and an exclusive photographic archive of Matt’s 10 years with Acid Jazz. It also includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Berry.
The CD deluxe set is the casebound book format and features a 24-page book with sleeve notes and photos.
Gather Up will be released on 26 November 2021. The 2LP edition is a gatefold edition and is pressed on red vinyl. Nice.

Studio Canal are reissuing James Cameron’s classic 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgement Day for its 30th anniversary and are marketing a bundle which features three blu-ray discs and a 2LP coloured vinyl set.
The blu-ray element features three discs: 4K UHD, Blu-Ray & Blu-Ray 3D (all-region discs) and the 2LP set of course features Brad Fiedel’s soundtrack pressed on grey vinyl and comes with a lenticular print of the front cover.

There’s plenty of extras on the blu-rays, as you’d imagine, including all three versions of the film (theatrical, special edition, extended special edition).
Although there’s been numerous editions of both film and soundtrack over the years, given the cost of even a single vinyl pressing these days, £60 for this doesn’t feel too bad, especially if you’re yet to pick up the 4K version.
This 30th anniversary Terminator 2: Judgement Day set is released on 6 December 2021.

Are Two’/’Same Make New Mission’/’Building The Perfect Arnold
Music On Vinyl/CD will release The MissionCollected in October a new compilation of some of group’s best songs. What is on offer is a 48-track triple-CD package or a limited edition 3LP vinyl set.
The latter is quite interesting, because it adds a bonus LP of remixes which is exclusive to this first pressing (limited to 2000 numbered copies worldwide). The vinyl is a 31-track offering but all future pressings will be 2LP and not include the six extended remixes.

The vinyl edition comes in a high quality PVC protective sleeve and includes a four-page insert with sleeve notes and a foreword by Wayne Hussey.

This November, Radiohead will reissue their studio albums Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001) together as one package called KID A MNESIA
The reissue will be available as a 3LP vinyl set or a triple-CD package, both of which offer a third disc dubbed ‘KID AMNESIAE’. This is comprised of unearthed material culled from the Kid A / Amnesiac sessions along with alternate versions and elements of album tracks and B-sides. This bonus disc features the never-before-heard ‘If You Say The Word’ and a previously unreleased studio recording of ‘Follow Me Around’.
The three-CD set comes in a three-pocket gatefold package while the 3LP vinyl features two half-speed cut pressings of the albums and a 12-inch of the bonus disc. The indie-exclusive 3LP red vinyl edition is available at Rough Trade in the UK.
The band’s official store are offering a double-cassette version (!), a 3LP cream vinyl edition and an art book (on top of the standard editions).
Elbow will release their new album, Flying Dream 1, in November and fans in the UK can secure a signed CD or a vinyl copy with a signed print.
The band’s ninth studio album was written remotely in their home studios before Elbow came together to record the songs (at the empty Brighton Theatre Royal).

WithABBA-mania in full flow – 80,000 album pre-orders in the UK and counting! – SDE wants to report on a few formats that may be of interest that are now more widely available.
The ABBA shop had CD singles of both ‘I Still Have Faith In You‘ and ‘Don’t Shut Me Down‘ which were both presumed to be exclusive to the band’s channel, but in fact are not. They have turned up on Amazon. They are only one-track CDs but hey, they’re CD singles and SDE always saves a gold star and a ‘well done’ to artists and labels who support CD singles!
The other thing to mention is that there is a Japanese SHM-CDthat comes with two DVDs.
The two DVDs feature the ABBA in Japan TV special from 1978 and two documentaries about their 1978 and 1980 visits to Japan. There is also an ‘ABBA in Japan’ photo gallery and a Japanese Single & Album sleeve gallery. This two-DVD set was issued as a standalone commercial product in 2009 but is now bundled with the Japanese exclusive of Voyage.
With this Japanese set, UK fans can either pay more (quite a bit more) for the easy option and order it via Amazon in the UK, or chose to order from Amazon Japan or CDJapan. With the latter you will almost certainly get stung for import duties, whereas Amazon Japan takes care of that in advance. Bear in mind CD Japan are calling this product “extremely limited”.
There’s also actually a second SHM-CD release in Japan, and this one is bundled with ABBA Gold. You may have heard of that compilation.
Saint Etienne return with their 10th album. I’ve Been Trying To Tell You uses sounds and samples from 1997 to 2001, evoking the folk memory of the period by using and twisting recordings from the time, re-working them into new songs. “They’re all by people you’d have heard on daytime Radio 1 or 2 at the time,” Bob clarifies, “not Boards of Canada or anything”. Rough Trade in the UK have an exclusive 2CD set with bonus remixes and an exclusive ‘powder blue’ vinyl edition.
Physical release of Jean-Michel Jarre’s New Year’s Eve live performance which combined life-like concert visuals in VR with a real live studio performance. The performance includes tracks from Electronica, as well as new reworked versions of his classics from Oxygène and Equinoxe. This CD+blu-ray edition includes various surround mixes (such as DTS HD 5.0) and downloads for “binaural headphone mix” and a QR code to visit UBISOFT 360 degree version of Notre-Dame de Paris.
An international cast of Latin rock and pop artists from around the globe interpret Elvis Costello and The Attractions’ album, This Year’s Model. The Spanish-language adaptations are set to the band’s classic studio performances, culled from the original master recordings, which have been newly mixed. I haven’t heard this yet, but possibly one to file under ‘just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do it’. A 2021 remaster of the original album is also issued this week on CD and vinyl.
I picked the wrong week to try and have a few days of a semi-break up in Yorkshire visiting my mum. What you don’t want to happen when you are trying to not do too much work is for ABBA TO REFORM!
It’s fair to say that the announcement on Thursday evening exceeded all expectations and not only are we getting the ABBA-tar live experience but also a new album! And it’s the new material that I’m most interested in.
In that interview on Thursday, Zoe Ball at one point asked what ‘team’ and producers Benny and Bjorn had been working with. They looked shocked at the question and simply answered “It’s just us”.
And there is the strength encapsulated in one simple comment. ABBA do not need anyone else and moreover they do not want to be anyone else. Unlike, say Duran Duran, they don’t yearn to stay ‘relevant’ and do not need to bring in outside producers, new musicians, or collaborate with other singers to keep things interesting (for them). There are no songs on the Voyage album “featuring Ed Sheeran” or “featuring Dua Lipa” or, heaven forbid, “featuring Elton John”.
Bjorn said that “no imagination could dream up” the position that they are in, in terms of putting out a new album after 40 years and still be “the best of friends”. It’s hard to disagree, so what do we make of the new songs?
I Still Have Faith In You
This song expresses what Bjorn was talking about (one of the lines is “how inconceivable it is to reach this far“) and it is an ABBA 2021 mission statement, of sorts. It’s an openly sentimental number about friendship, doubt, faith, togetherness and longevity. Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frida tick every single box when it comes to relationships (friends, lovers, wives/husbands, parents, workmates, ex-wives/husbands) and so their feelings towards each other must be deep, layered, complex and rich.
This song could easily have been a simple and straightforward piano ballad, but with ABBA there is always musical ambition, construction, building blocks and different elements to keep you interested. The first two minutes are about rumination. I still have faith in you but “do I have it in me?” And then at around the two minute mark the questions are answered with a triumphant ‘chorus’ section: “We do have it in us / New spirit has arrived / The joy and the sorrow / We have a story / And it survived“. Things calm down at the end and we are back to Frida, piano and some strings.
One gets the feeling that this was a song that they needed to sing. It sounds like ABBA, which is obviously important, and there’s plenty to enjoy including Frida’s superb lead vocal, some strong melodies and even a hint of ‘Fernando’ drums at one point. The triumphant – somewhat bombastic – section is probably the weakest part of the song but it’s hard not to be moved by the sentiment, which declares “We alive, we’re back and we’re ABBA!”
Don’t Shut Me Down
If you had any doubts about ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ these are banished with ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’. This Agnetha-led first person narrative starts beautifully with some wonderful words describing our protagonist hanging around in the park waiting to go and confront her man. There are rich strings, a harp, some ‘ooh, oohs’ and just before you start to wonder if this is another ballad, a Benny piano glissando and some vaudeville-style saxophone transform ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’ into a wonderful perky mid-paced pop song which has the bounce of The Visitors‘ ‘Head Over Heels’ and the knowing lyric of ‘The Day Before You Came’.
‘Don’t Shut Me Down’ is brilliant and doesn’t put a foot wrong, most noticeably in the extremely catchy chorus which combines words and melody beautifully. It’s a great idea to put the women in the position to challenge and confront the man. She goes to his flat and says “And now you see another me, I’ve been reloaded, yeah / I’m fired up, don’t shut me down“. The next line rather suggests Bjorn was a fan of Christopher Nolan’s 2010 film Inception: “I’m like a dream within a dream that’s been decoded“.
The song flows effortlessly from that preface in the park, to the verses as the narrator confronts who we presume is her ex, to the defiant choruses (“I’m fired up, I’m hot, don’t shut me down“). There’s a skilful post-chorus section which brings things down and eases us gently back to the verses via that swaggering sax and some strings.
The whole thing is classic ABBA and I’m convinced if this was a single from Super Trouper or The Visitors it would have been a major hit. And let’s be clear, it sounds a lot like ABBA from 1980/81, which in itself is a remarkable achievement. Because they’ve managed to do it with such aplomb, it’s easy to take for granted, but it’s like Paul McCartney producing an album in 2021 that sounds like – and is as good as – Tug of War.
Whether ABBA can maintain this quality for a whole album is the big question. On the face of it, it would seem unlikely. For me, ABBA only ever produced one truly great album and that was The Visitors. But I’m not writing them off or shutting them down just yet. They’re fired up (and so are we).
ABBA’s Voyage album will be released on 5 November 2021.
This October, Simply Red will release Remixed Vol. 1 (1985-2000) a two-CD collection of their hit singles in remixed form from the band’s first 15 years.
The 22-song selection works through Simply Red’s catalogue and mixes period mixes of the time with some rarer selections. In fact, there are seven unreleased remixes in total including the ‘David Morales Radio Mix’ of ‘Something Got Me Started’ and the ‘United City Mix’ of ‘Money’s Too Tight To Mention’.
Some kind of Simply Red rarities collection was long overdue and while what is on offer here is not comprehensive and also fairly narrow in its remit, it’s better than nothing! If volume two simply carries on post-2000 it’s fair to say it won’t be as appealing as this double-CD package.
Remixed Vol. 1 (1985-2000) will be released on 22 October 2021.
ABBA will release a brand new studio album called Voyage in November! The group have reunited and recorded a ten-track album which features all new material, including ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ and ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’.
Voyage was recorded at Benny’s studio Riksmixningsverket in Stockholm, and will be available on CD, vinyl, Amazon exclusive orange vinyl, a CD box set with exclusive poster, art cards & sticker sheets. There is no format with any extra audio. ABBA also have their own store with various editions.
The other news, as expected, is that a revolutionary new ABBA concert will debut next year that will see Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid performing digitally with a live 10-piece band, in a purpose-built arena in London. This will start on 27 May 2022.
The ‘Remixed & Updated’ version of Pink Floyd‘s 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason – first included in 2019’s The Later Years box set – is being made available on separately on CD and vinyl and two ‘combo’ box sets offering CD+DVD or CD+blu–ray.
The changes made to the album included returning to some of Richard Wright’s original keyboard takes, and re-recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason. The producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin felt that they restored “a better creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members”.
Now available outside of that massive box set, the new edition showcases new and updated artwork with a previously unused image from the original photo shoot featuring the iconic beds on the beach.

Stereo versions are available on CD and 2LP vinyl while the CD+DVD editions go much further with the video discs also providing 5.1 surround mixes, music videos, concert screen films, a documentary and some bonus live tracks. The surround mix on the DVD is 5.1 Dolby Digital (48/16) and DTS (48/16). On blu-ray it’s 5.1 DTS Master Audio (96/24). Both include hi-res stereo.
Both box sets come with a 40-page booklet and an envelope containing six exclusive stickers designed by Peter Curzon from StormStudios.
The Remixed & Updated edition of A Momentary Lapse of Reason will be released on 29 October 2021.
L.A. Woman, The Doors last studio album with Jim Morrison will be reissued as a 50th anniversary 3CD+vinyl LP 50th anniversary deluxe edition later this year.
The album was recorded over six days at the Workshop, the band’s rehearsal space on Santa Monica Boulevard in November 1970 and received critical and commercial acclaim when released in April the following year. L.A. Woman is home to the brilliant title track, ‘Love Her Madly’, ‘Riders on the Storm’ and seven other songs.
For the 50th anniversary edition, the album has been ‘newly remastered’ (again) by The Doors’ longtime engineer and mixer Bruce Botnick. This is included on CD 1 and the vinyl LP.
CDs two and three feature unreleased studio outtakes including the previously unheard original demo of ‘Riders on the Storm’ which was recently discovered in the band’s vault, having been assumed lost for decades. The demo recording was done with producer Paul A. Rothchild, who famously referred to it as “cocktail music”. This led to Rothchild departing the project, with the band opting to co-produce the album with Botnick.
Botnick has also created a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original album but instead of including it with this physical deluxe edition, Rhino are – for the time being – only making available via streaming. This is a concerning development that I hope does not become a trend amongst major labels.
The two bonus CDs offer more than two hours of unreleased recordings taken from the sessions for L.A. Woman, with CD2 offering “serial takes” of ‘The Changeling,’ ‘Love Her Madly,’ ‘Riders On The Storm,’ and ‘L.A. Woman’. An early demo of ‘Hyacinth House’ recorded at Robby Krieger’s home studio in 1969 is also included (appended to the album on CD 1 alongside that ‘Riders on the Storm’ demo).

Amongst the outtakes on CD 3 are takes of Junior Parker’s ‘Mystery Train’, John Lee Hooker’s ‘Crawling King Snake’, Big Joe Williams’ ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ and Lee Dorsey’s ‘Get Out Of My Life Woman’.
In 2011, at the time of the 40th anniversary of this album, Doors manager Jeff Jampol announced a five-CD super deluxe of L.A. Woman. This was eventually cancelled, with Jampol blaming Rhino for getting cold feet and worrying about the “market” for such a product. Ten years later, this new edition (which features David Fricke sleeve notes) will go some way towards making up for that product’s non-appearance.
The L.A. Woman 50th anniversary edition will be released on 3 December 2021.
Five years after 57th & 9th, Sting has announced The Bridge, a studio album of brand new material.
In what has become a familiar story amongst songwriters and musicians, The Bridge was written and recorded in a year of global pandemic and finds Sting ruminating on personal loss, separation, disruption, lockdown, and social and political turmoil.
Sting explains his approach: “These songs are between one place and another, between one state of mind and another, between life and death, between relationships. Between pandemics, and between eras – politically, socially and psychologically, all of us are stuck in the middle of something. We need a bridge.”

The album is said to be “eclectic” and draw inspiration “from genres including rock n’ roll, jazz, classical music and folk”. Contributing musicians include Dominic Miller (guitar), Josh Freese & Manu Katché (drums), Branford Marsalis (saxophone) and Martin Kierszenbaum & Fred Renaudin (keyboards). The Bridge is mostly produced by Sting and Martin Kierszenbaum.
In standard CD and vinyl editionsThe Bridge is a ten-track album although the deluxe CD adds three bonus tracks (one of which is ‘(Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay’) and a Japanese SHM-CD+DVD adds one more (another cover, this time Nilsson’s ‘I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City’) making that a 14-track offering.
The SHM-CD comes in seven-inch deluxe packaging and also includes with a DVD featuring a interview, two promo videos and a track-by-track commentary from Sting. Unusually, the SHM-CD+DVD is being marketed directly from Sting’s own store
There is also a deluxe 2LP black vinyl which appears to be ‘reserved’ for indie retail (and is in Target in America). This adds the three deluxe CD bonus tracks. Sting is offering an exclusive white vinyl version via his store.

Paul McCartney‘s Press to Play was released in the UK exactly 35 years ago today! The 1986 album was co-produced with Hugh Padgham and saw Paul embrace a more ‘modern’, and at times, experimental approach to his music.
Opinion is divided on the creative merits of the album but it was not a commercial success. It spent one solitary week in the top ten of the UK album charts (at number eight), peaked a a lowly number 30 in America and delivered zero top 20 hit singles on either side of the Atlantic. In short, the public were not enamoured with Paul’s new music.
Press to Play at 35 is a new SDE-exclusive 32-page ‘keepsake’ booklet that features a satisfying ‘deep dive’ exploration of the album. It includes an exclusive, and very candid, interview with Hugh Padgham who goes into some detail about how he got the job and what it was like working with an artist of Paul McCartney’s stature. Cherry Red are to reissue American singer-songwriter Debbie Gibson‘s first album, Out of the Blue, as a 3CD+DVD deluxe edition.
The 1987 long-player was an enormous success, especially in America, where it peaked at number seven and spawned four top five singles, including the chart-topping ‘Foolish Beat’. The singles did well in the UK as well, with two top ten hits ‘Shake Your Love’ and ‘Foolish Beat’ and the almost top ten single ‘Only In My Dreams’ (#11 in the UK, #4 in the US).

An expanded Out of the Blue was part of Demon Music’s massive 13-disc We Could Be Together deluxe set from 2017 but this is the first opportunity to get it as a standalone product, and it looks fairly extensive. Everything Out of the Blue-related from that previous package is included on this new expanded set, except for ‘Shake Your Love [Luke Mornay Remix]’ and ‘Only In My Dreams ’98 [Club Mix]’ – but since neither of those were remixes from the original era, this is unlikely to be a problem for most.
The good news is this new 3CD+DVD package offers a lot more. There’s an enormous amount of original remixes, including dubs, bonus beats, ‘percapella’ etc. It looks pretty comprehensive, but will wait for SDE Debbie Gibson aficionados to either confirm or deny!

The DVD (NTSC, region-free) offers all five promo videos, Out Of The Blue: Live In Concert (the 1989 video release which looks like a repeat of what was on the second DVD in the Demon set) and Up Close And Personal an ‘interview special’.
More good news in that this is packaged as a digi-pak (like the Howard Jones sets) and not one of those insubstantial ‘capacity wallets’. The booklet includes a 2021 introduction written by Debbie. The label say that this is “the first in a series of Debbie Gibson reissues” so it’s looking like we can expect more like this, especially for Out of the Blue follow-up Electric Youth which was actually a bigger hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

Van Der Graaf Generator/The Charisma YearsCD, Box Set, Blu-ray
English prog rock band Van Der Graaf‘s entire recorded work for Charisma Records is being released in a 17CD+3 x blu-ray box set. This package features remastered albums, bonus tracks, BBC sessions, rare video footage, new stereo remixes and 5.1 surround versions.
Iron Maiden release their 17th studio album. Senjutsu was recorded in Paris with longstanding producer Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Steve Harris. The box set features “CD, Blu Ray and exclusive memorabilia (art cards/ poster/ lenticular poster/ origami sheet) plus 28-page booklet.
Limited edition yellow and black splatter coloured vinyl edition of Slade‘s chart-topping third studio album. Features the UK number one ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’ and ‘Gudbuy T’Jane’ (which reached number two).
Reissue of Steven Wilson’s prog band Porcupine Tree‘s 10th (and final) album from 2009. The Incident is notable for its title ‘track’ which is a 55-minute song cycle with 14 songs (four further tracks complete the album). Unlike the original issue this comes on one single CD for the reissue but the 2LP vinyl echoes the original.
Space‘s debut album was issued in September 1996 and features the hit single ‘Female of the Species’. This 25th anniversary LP is pressed on 180g translucent yellow vinyl.
A copy of the deluxe edition of Prince‘s Welcome 2 America will be won by one lucky SDE reader. Recorded in 2010, this ‘lost’ album is very good indeed and the box set is beautifully packaged, containing the album on CD, 2LP vinyl (with etched fourth side) and a blu-ray of a live concert. There is also an excellent large format booklet and plenty of replica memorabilia.
