The Rolling Stones will release their much teased new album, Hackney Diamonds in October.
The album marks the band’s first studio album of original material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang (2016’s Blue and Lonesome being made up of cover versions).
The album has been produced by Andrew Watt and features contributions from former Stones bass player Bill Wyman, new drummer Steve Jordan, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.
Angry by The Rolling Stones
There’s two CD versions of the 12-track offering (jewel case and digipak), various coloured vinyl versions and perhaps most of interest to SDE readers, a CD+blu-ray edition with a Dolby Atmos Mix and a 24/96 hi-res stereo version. That’s the good news. The bad news is that these discs come wrapped up in a box set with a 64-page book and a lenticular sleeve, so it’s not cheap. If you wish to support SDE you can pre-order this edition from the SDE shop.
No track listings has been officially released yet although you can preview the first single, ‘Angry’, above. Hackney Diamonds will be released on 20 October 2023, via Polydor.

Arther Baker’sDance Masters series continues in November, as the spotlight turns to another remix legend, one of the originators of the form, John Luongo.
Hailing from Boston, John ‘TC’ Luongo is widely seen as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of the Disco era. For over a decade, until he stepped away from mixing, almost everything he touched was a hit, including classics such as Jackie Moore’s ‘This Time Baby’, ‘Vertigo / Relight My Fire’ by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle’s ‘Music Is My Way Of Life’. He also worked on music outside the disco genre, which is why these new sets include artists such as ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Tina Turner, Cabaret Voltaire, ABC, Wang Chung, Soft Cell, Level 42 and many more.

The Cranberries’ third album To The Faithful Departed will be reissued as expanded CD and vinyl editions in October.
The 1996 album features the singles ‘Salvation’, ‘Free to Decide’ and ‘When You’re Gone’. The original CD ran for nearly an hour and featured 15 tracks, while in the USA, a slightly shorter 13-track version omitted ‘Intermission’ and ‘Cordell’. This same 13-track version was released on vinyl at the time (1LP set).
To The Faithful Departed was a significant success and lead single ‘Salvation’ topped Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks alternative chart, just as ‘Zombie’ had a couple of years earlier.
The reissue offers the record as single vinyl set (as per the original) or as a 2LP package which delivers the 15-track version over three sides, with five bonus tracks on side four. These extra tracks included three previously unreleased album demos recorded with Tim Palmer in Paris.
Drummer Fergal Lawler recalls: “When we were on tour for our second album No Need to Argue, we began discussions about recording the next album. We had spoken to Island Records about the possibility of trying a new producer and they suggested Tim Palmer who had worked with Tears for Fears. So we decided to demo some new songs with him. We had a few days off in Paris and we recorded When You’re Gone, Free to Decide and I Just Shot John Lennon. Tim was a lovely guy and the recordings sounded great but we felt he was a little similar in style to Stephen Street and we wanted to try something different. We had been touring a lot and wanted more of a live sound.”
How the 3CD deluxe looks when it’s opened up! (click image to enlarge)
Bruce Fairbairn (best known for working with rock bands such as Aerosmith, AC/DC and Van Halen) was eventually chosen as the producer and gave The Cranberries the “big, live sound” they were looking for.
The 3CD deluxe edition offers the same Paris demos plus unreleased outtakes and early mixes and and 12 live tracks recorded on the band’s 1996 Free to Decide tour. This comes with an extensive booklet about the making of the album based on interviews with the remaining members of the band.
To The Faithful Departed will be reissued on 13 October 2023 via UMR/Island.
The Doors / Live at the Matrix 1967: The Original Masters
Very early on in their career, The Doors played at a small, hole-in-the-wall San Francisco club called The Matrix, which was co-owned by Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin. The band’s two shows – March 7 and March 10, 1967 – were taped and these saw official release back in 2008, however in what you can only call a ‘cake and eat it’ scenario, Rhino say it was discovered after release that they were taken from third-generation tapes of the recordings, which is why this new release has the subtitle ‘The Original Masters’. It’s available as a 3CD or 5LP set which are limited to 21,000 or 14,000 copies worldwide.
Duran Duran’sAndy Taylor isn’t letting his stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis stop him from making music. Not only does he play guitar on most of Duran’s forthcoming new album but this week sees the release of Man’s A Wolf ToMan, his first solo album in over 30 years.
I’m pleased to update fans with the news that the SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio of Duran Duran’s new album Danse Macabre will now also include a 5.1 surround mix, in addition to the Dolby Atmos and hi-res stereo mixes.
The 5.1 mix is derived from Bob Clearmountain’s Atmos Mix and sounds fantastic. Technically, you would still have heard this mix on a non-Atmos set-up anyway, since the Atmos mix would have ‘folded down’ but having the mix on the blu-ray as a option that you can select and play is good and avoids anyl receiver/amp quirks causing potential issues.
So the Danse Macabre blu-ray now features:
Dolby Atmos Mix (by Bob Clearmountain)
DTS-HD Master Audio 5. 1 mix (48/24)
Hi-Res Stereo Mix (96/24)
The pre-order window for the Danse Macabre blu-ray closes in 4 days, on 6 September 2023 – don’t miss out! It will be released on 27 October 2023, via BMG.
Order the SDE-exclusive blu-ray edition via the SDE shop using this link or via the button below (‘pre-order’). Note:There are no longer any extra charges for shipping to the EU.
TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
The Sex Pistolsthird single, ‘Pretty Vacant’, is being made available on coloured vinyl for the first time, for another limited production run.
Back in July 1977, this release followed ‘God Save The Queen’ into the UK top 10 and saw the band perform on Top of the Pops for the first time. The single features a cover of The Stooges ‘No Fun’ on the B-side

The single reissue replicates Jamie Reid’s (RIP) iconic UK artwork and there will be 4577 copies of this limited edition pressed on red vinyl. They are all numbered.

Duran Duran return in October with a brand new studio album called Danse Macabre!
This record sees the original line-up back together for many of the tracks as Nick Rhodes, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor, John Taylor, and Simon Le Bon reunite for the first time since 2004’s Astronaut! Fans of ’90s-era Duran will be further delighted to see the return of guitarist Warren Cuccurullo who guests on a couple of songs (including the title track), making this the first Duran Duran album since 1986’s Notorious to feature the guitar playing of both Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo.
Inspired by the band’s one-off, 2022 Halloween show at the Encore Theater at Wynn in Las Vegas, Danse Macabre is a spooky, ghoul-inspired 13-song collection which features three brand new songs, covers of classic tracks from artists such as Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones and Siouxsie and the Banshees and new versions of numbers from Duran Duran’s back catalogue, including debut album track ‘Night Boat’, ‘Union of the Snake’ B-side ‘Secret Oktober’ (now ‘Secret Oktober 31st’), a re-spelt ‘Love Voudou’ from The Wedding Album, and Rio’s ‘Lonely in Your Nightmare’, which is mashed up with with a cover of Rick James’ ‘Super Freak’ for a song called ‘Super Lonely Freak’. In total, nine of the album’s 13 tracks were performed for last year’s Halloween show.
The title track of Danse Macabre features Warren Cuccurullo on guitar
Other guests on the album include longtime friend and collaborator Nile Rodgers along with Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin. The artwork features images adapted from a collection of authentic vintage séance photos that band member Nick Rhodes sourced at auction.
I am delighted to confirm that Danse Macabre has been mixed for spatial audio and a Dolby Atmos Mix will be available physically only via an SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio, No 13 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series! The Atmos Mix has been created by the legend that is Bob Clearmountain and this is the first time a Duran Duran album has been mixed for Atmos and released as a physical product and only the second time since the Astronaut Dualdisc/SACD that any of their albums has been available physically in surround sound. The blu-ray features:
Dolby Atmos Mix (by Bob Clearmountain)
5.1 Surround Mix (48/24)
Hi-Res Stereo Mix (96/24)
The SDE-exclusive limited edition blu-ray audio of Danse Macabre
Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why the blu-ray is highly recommended:
It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of the album via a physical product
You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
The Atmos Mix on the Blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
The Blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
Supporting SDE with these initiatives is leading to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future!
This exclusive blu-ray pre-order for Danse Macabre closes in 4 days, on 6 September 2023 – don’t miss out! It will be released on 27 October 2023, via BMG.
Order the SDE-exclusive blu-ray edition via the SDE shop using this link or via the button below (‘pre-order’). Note: There are no longer any extra charges for shipping to the EU.
Other formats of Danse Macabre are available from the official Duran Duran shop (US fans should head here) include:
Soft Cell’s debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret will be reissued in October across a number of formats including a 6CD box set with many previously unreleased tracks.
Initially released in November 1981, the 10-track song cycle, in the words of Marc Almond, “Tells a story of a bored ordinary bloke seething with his life wanting more and looking for excitement and adventure in a red neon lit Soho world of red-light cabarets, prostitutes and sex dwarves, looking back at his youth and wondering what happened.” The album was massively influential and paved the way for countless synth-based music duos, notably the Pet Shop Boys. It contains three top five singles in ‘Tainted Love’ (a No 1 and the best-selling UK single of 1981), ‘Bedsitter’ and ‘Say Hello Wave Goodbye’.
“The album was the other side of the coin of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain: I never felt it was political at the time, but it seems it now. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was the secret seedy life that went on behind the mask of Conservative Britain” Marc Almond
Marc Almond
The 6CD box set offers 96 tracks in total, 40 of which are previously unreleased. Content includes new and old 12-inch mixes (including Dave Ball’s 2018 studio reworkings), BBC Radio One sessions, early versions (including a Daniel Miller-produced version of ‘Tainted Love’), instrumentals and live performances including from the band’s O2 show in 2021.
The 6CD box set edition of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
The box set is presented as al 10” x 10” package and includes an essay on the story of the album by Adrian Thrills, including new interviews with Marc and Dave, album and single sleeve scans and more.
Additionally, there’s a 2LP vinyl version (in black and coloured variants) which adds a bonus LP of single versions (A-sides and B-sides).
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret will be reissued on 1 December 2023 (was 20 October, then 10 November) via UMR/EMI.
Pink Floyd have announced ‘breakout’ versions of the 50th anniversary edition of The Dark Side Of The Moon, including a blu-ray audio with the new Dolby Atmos Mix.
New CD and vinyl editions are also available, but it’s the blu-ray that will be most of interest to audiophile fans since the Dolby Atmos Mix is finally ‘unlocked’ from the expensive box set released earlier this year.
In fact, arguably, the standalone product is an improvement on what is in the box, since it brings together Dolby Atmos, 5.1 mix (24/96) and the (very) hi-res stereo mix (24/192). In the super deluxe edition these were split across two discs.

This blu-ray audio (no video) features the following audio streams:

The spatial audio mixes are by James Guthrie. This is presented in a softpack die-cut gatefold with yet another variation of the famous front cover. Commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet are included.

The Harmony Codex, Steven Wilson’s seventh album, will be released in September.
Described as “a genre-spanning collection that opens up like a musical puzzle box” the 10-track album runs for over 60 minutes and sees Wilson deliver lengthier, and perhaps more musically complex songs than on his previous album, The Future Bites, with four of the numbers clocking in at between seven and 11 minutes. While not technically a concept album (there’s no obvious overriding narrative arc) it has that kind of vibe.
The 2CD+blu-ray hardcover book deluxe edition
The album will be released across the usual formats, the best of which is the 3-disc deluxe edition which returns to the 100-page hardcover book format last seen on 2017’s To The Bone. This 2CD+blu-ray set offers a second CD which offers a a 77-minute “reimagining” of the album, including contributions from the likes of Tears For Fears‘ Roland Orzabal, Manic Street Preachers, Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) and Interpol.
The blu-ray in the deluxe package offers the expected Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and hi-res stereo but adds instrumentals (in the same three audio streams) which are not included in the standalone blu-ray (both blu-rays also include two videos). The Carl Glover-designed hardback book features Hajo Mueller’s stunning artwork, meticulously created over an 18 month period in close collaboration with Steven during the making of the album.
The album is also available as a 2LP set, with a ‘coke-bottle’ coloured vinyl exclusive to the official shop. CD (in a jewel case) and cassette editions also available. The official store also has a series of special bundles (the previously offered signed prints appear to have sold out).
The Harmony Codex will be released on 29 September 2023, via Virgin/SW Records. You can preview the first single, ‘Economies of Scale’, below.

Eighties synth-pop legends OMD return with a new album called Bauhaus Staircase.
The 12-track long-player is their first since 2017’s The Punishment of Luxury and is said to be “the band’s most explicitly political record” and the crowning achievement of their “desire to be both Stockhausen and ABBA – born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown when, as Andy McCluskey admits: “I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom”.
You can preview the title track, above.Andy says “The song is a metaphor for strength and artist passion in the face of criticism and adversity. When times are hard, there is a tendency for Governments to look at cutting funding for creativity, just at the moment when the arts are most needed to nourish our souls. It seems appropriate that the song and its eponymous album were created during Covid Lockdown.”
The album is being issued on CD and as a special 2CD deluxe which offers every track as a demo (including a bonus second demo of the title track). Various coloured vinyl versions are also available.

Prince’s 1991 album Diamonds and Pearls will be reissued in October across a number of formats, including a 7CD+Blu-ray super deluxe, a 12LP+blu-ray super deluxe and a standalone blu-ray with Dolby Atmos Mix of the studio album (not in either box).
The album was recorded largely with the New Power Generation, who were: Sonny Thompson (vocals & bass), Damon Dickson (vocals & percussion), Rosie Gaines (vocals & keyboards), Michael Bland (drums), Kirk Johnson (vocals & percussion), Tony M (vocals), Levi Seacer, Jr. (bass, guitar & vocals), and Tommy Barbarella (keyboards). Diamonds and Pearls spawned a collection of big hit singles ‘Gett Off’, ‘Cream’, and the iconic title track, and the laid back ‘Money Don’t Matter 2 Night’. Diamonds and Pearls remains Prince’s best-selling album, in the UK.
The 7CD+blu-ray super deluxe edition (click image to enlarge)
The box set editions offer the album remastered (on CD or 2LP vinyl), a CD (or 2LPs) of single remixes and edits (including the legendary promo-only ‘Damn Near 10 Min’ remix of ‘Gett Off’), three CDs (5LPs) of ‘Vault’ songs , all 33 of which are previously unreleased, and a live concert from January 1992 at Prince’s Minneapolis club, Glam Slam, which served as a preview of the Diamonds and Pearls tour (2CDs or 3LPs). This has been newly mixed from the 24-track master tape.
The blu-ray included with both 7CD and 12LP vinyl super deluxe editions includes the Glam Slam concert shot in high definition with sound mixed to Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or stereo. It also features Prince & The New Power Generation’s performance at The Special Olympics at the Metrodome in Minneapolis in July 1991 along with the soundcheck for that same performance (again, sound is Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or stereo). Finally the Blu-ray is completed by the inclusion of the Diamonds And Pearls Video Collection, originally released on VHS and LaserDisc in 1993. This is stereo-only.
‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ is a ‘vault’ track included on the super deluxe edition box sets
The box set editions offer 75 audio tracks with 47 of them previously unreleased. Both formats come with a 120-page hardcover book which features unseen photos and essays.
The only way to own the new Dolby Atmos Mix of the Diamonds and Pearls album is to buy the limited edition blu-ray audio, which is available to pre-order now from the SDE shop. Alongside the Atmos Mix is the remastered stereo version of the album.
The reissue is also available as 2CD and 4LP sets (album & remixes/edits) and as single CD and 2LP editions with the latter being available pressed as a standard black vinyl edition or pressed on clear ‘diamond’ vinyl.
Diamonds and Pearls will be reissued on 27 October 2023 via Warner Records. Pre-order the blu-ray audio via the SDE shop using this link or the button below. The blu-ray is released on 24 November. A reminder that there is no longer any extra charges for shipping to the EU.
