Get Back has Gone Back

Let’s start this week with The Beatles Get Back, the acclaimed Peter Jackson’s ‘redux’ of Lindsay Michael-Hogg’s Let It Be documentary.

The ‘3-Part Event’, as it was hyped, has been available on Disney+ since late November 2021 and the exact same near eight-hour cut was due to be released on Blu-ray and DVD on 28 February this year. That will now not happen

Via social channels, The Beatles blamed “A technical and supply chain issue” for the delay but have not, for the moment, told fans when the it might appear “We look forward to sharing a new release date soon” they say.

The excellent home video site, The Digital Bits, offered a little more information telling its readers that “Apparently, the studio caught an audio glitch in the release at the last minute and needs to correct it”.

These delays are unrelated to Peter Jackson’s publicly-announced enthusiasm for producing an ‘extended cut’ of Get Back, so don’t expect anything other than the standard version when it does finally get released.

New George Michael Book, ‘Words’

Lyric books are all the rage these days and in recent years we’ve had slim volumes from the likes of Kate Bush and the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and a less slim volume from Sir Paul McCartney. Only this week, Bryan Ferry announced his book, called, er, Lyrics.

Back in 2011, an operation called The Lyric Book Company put together a book for George Michael to coincide with his Symphonica tour. That volume was called Words and it is being made available again with a release date of 20 May 2022.

The book is only available via George Michael’s website and if it’s a little steep at £25 a pop, the good news is that all profits will be donated to UK charity Macmillan Cancer Support Nurses.

This book confirms George Michael’s team’s strategy, which is do-everything-but-reissue-his-music.

The One And Only Chesney Hawkes

Fans of Nik Kershaw-powered pop star Chesney Hawkes will be pleased – and non-fans will be likely be surprised – by a new 5CD+DVD box set called The Complete Picture: The Albums 1991-2012.

Hawkes had a UK number one single in 1991 with ‘The One And Only’ and followed it up with a minor hit ‘I’m A Man Not A Boy’ a few months later (don’t call him a one-hit-wonder!).

Despite quickly disappearing off the mainstream radar, Chesney Hawkes continued to write, record and tour and released four studio albums in the years since that debut single.

The Complete Picture: The Albums 1991-2012 is a 5CD+DVD box (click image to enlarge)

This new box set, which was compiled and overseen by Chesney himself, brings together all the albums with bonus tracks (previously unreleased demos, remixes, B-sides) and includes a DVD with videos, Top of the Pops appearances and live performances. The discs come in a clamshell box with a 24-page booklet.

The Complete Picture: The Albums 1991-2012 is being issued on 25 March 2022 and Hawkes is touring this year. Signed copies are available via Amazon in the UK.

Red Hot Chili Peppers / Unlimited Love

Almost six years after The Getaway, the Red Hot Chili Peppers return with Unlimited Love, a new studio album produced by Rick Rubin and featuring John Frusciante on guitar.

This the band’s first album with Rubin since 2011’s and Frusciante has been away for over 15 years (he last appeared on 2006’s Stadium Arcadium).

The first single is ‘Black Summer‘ and you can preview it below:

This is what the band have to say about the new record:

“Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt. We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album UNLIMITED LOVE, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it. ROCK OUT MOTHERFUCKERS!”.

– Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, John Frusciante

The album is being released on CD, 2LP black vinyl and deluxe gatefold 2LP with a poster. There’s an Amazon-exclusive 2LP blue vinyl edition, a special 2LP red vinyl which is available via RSD-participating indies and Rough Trade in the US have a 2LP orange vinyl. None of the coloured vinyl editions appear to come in the gatefold sleeve.

Unlimited Love will be released on 1 April 2022 and the band will play stadiums in the UK this summer.

Steven Wilson / Limited Edition Of One

This April, musician and songwriter Steven Wilson is issuing a memoir called Limited Edition Of One. In the book, Wilson examines his life and ponders how he has got to where is is right now.

He says: “The more I thought about it, the more I realised my career has been unusual. How did I manage to do everything wrong but still end up on the front cover of magazines, headlining world tours and achieving Top 5 albums? How did I attract such obsessive and fanatical fans, many of whom take everything I do or say very personally, which is simultaneously flattering but can also be tremendously frustrating? Even this I somehow cultivated without somehow meaning to. My accidental career”.

The Special Edition of Limited Edition Of One includes a 70-minute CD [click image to enlarge]

The book is described as follows: “Part the long-awaited memoir of Steven Wilson: whose celebrated band Porcupine Tree began as teenage fiction before unintentionally evolving into a reality that encompassed Grammy-nominated records and sold-out shows around the world, before he set out for an even more successful solo career. Part the story of a twenty-first century artist who achieved chart-topping mainstream success without ever becoming part of the mainstream. From Abba to Stockhausen, via a collection of conversations and thought pieces on the art of listening, the rules of collaboration, lists of lists, personal stories, professional adventurism (including food, film, TV, modern art), old school rock stardom, how to negotiate an obsessive fanbase and survive on social media, and dream-fever storytelling”.

The Artist’s Edition of Limited Edition Of One [click image to enlarge]

There are three editions of the book: a standard single-volume hardcover edition which retails for around the £20 mark. A special edition which is a two-volume set in a slipcase which includes an exclusive supplementary edition containing 128 pages of additional material and comes with a 70-minute CD of of ‘audio illustrations’ from Steven Wilson’s personal cassette archive (including everything from musical extracts from school bands to early demos by Porcupine Tree and No-Man). This retails for around the £75 mark. Finally there’s an artist’s edition, which is limited to 125 copies and includes everything in the special edition but adds a signed lithograph print, bespoke handwritten lyrics from Steven himself and comes in a large outer box. This costs £275 but at the time of writing is sold out.

Limited Edition Of One will be published by Little Brown on 7 April 2022

Duran Duran amongst ‘Class of 22’ Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

Duran Duran have been announced as nominees for induction into the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Riding high on the back of the well-received Future Past, and celebrating 40 years together, this is the first time the group have been nominated.

Speaking on the news today, Simon Le Bon said: “Just to make it onto the nominations list is an honour that I never expected to experience… But for sure, this distinction is due in large part to the fact that we have an army of fans around the world who have unwaveringly supported us for the past four decades. We are extremely grateful to all of you for making this happen.”

“Just to make it onto the nominations list is an honour”

Simon Le Bon

Also on the list of nominees are Eurythmics, who were first nominated back in 2018 but failed to be voted through to become fully-fledged inductees, despite a fairly high profile campaign with Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox clearly delighted at having been recognised. Annie told SDE that when they were nominated “Sony suddenly woke up to our previous existence and wanted to create something for their ‘Legacy’ department!!” which is why those vinyl reissues happened. Does this mean we will see more ‘activity’ in 2022? Time will tell.

Kate Bush was nominated in last year and in 2018 so it is third time lucky for Ms Bush who, one assumes, couldn’t give two hoots. As far as SDE can recall she made no comment at all on either of the previous occasions never mind getting involved in anything as unsavoury as actively ‘campaigning’ to be inducted.

Beck is also in this year’s list, as is Carly Simon, Pat Benetar and Rage Against The Machine (their fourth nomination in five years!).

You can vote here and the voting deadline is the 29 April 2022. It’s early days, but current standings suggest Kate Bush isn’t going to be any luckier this year that she was previously!

Kraftwerk / Remixes

Back in 2020, Kraftwerk issued an album called Remixes which, sadly, was a streaming-only release. However, this changes next month when Remixes is finally issued as a physical product, offered as either a 2CD set or a triple vinyl package.

This is a collection of 19 remixes by DJs/producers/artists such as François Kervorkian, William Orbit, Étienne de Crécy, Orbital, Underground Resistance, DJ Rolando and Hot Chip. They are taken from various Kraftwerk 12-inch singles, CD singles and digital releases from the 1991-2021 era.

The album also plays host to Kraftwerk’s very latest Kling Klang studio output with the inclusion of ‘Non Stop’ alongside newly updated mixes of ‘Home Computer’ and ‘Tour De France (Etape 2)’. ‘Non Stop’ actually began life as a soundbite recorded for MTV in the 1980s, but in 2020, Kraftwerk took the original 30 second sound clip and then transformed it into a full 8 minute version on Remixes.

This set also includes the William Orbit Hardcore Mix of ‘Radioactivity’, which was previously only available on the 1991 US 12-inch, Kraftwerk’s own remix of ‘The Robots’ (‘Robotnik’) and Hot Chip’s extended
mix of ‘La Forme’.

Kraftwerk take their multimedia 3-D show around the globe this year, including a 24-date North American tour and they co-headline with the Chemical Brothers at All Points East in London in August.

Remixes will be released on 25 March 2022.

Echo & The Bunnymen / Songs to Learn and Sing vinyl reissue

Echo & The Bunnymen’s 1985 compilation Songs to Learn and Sing is being reissued on vinyl later this month.

The 11-track collection featured songs from the band’s four albums up to that point: Crocodiles (1980), Heaven Up Here (1981), Porcupine (1983) and Ocean Rain (1984). It also included non-album tracks ‘The Puppet’, ‘Never Stop’ and B-side ‘Do It Clean’.

Songs to Learn and Sing was the band’s first greatest hits

A new song, ‘Bring On The Dancing Horses’, was issued as a single to promote this compilation and was was the last track on the record (there are in chronological order). This song was produced by Laurie Latham who had worked with Paul Young earlier that year. Initial vinyl pressings included a seven-inch single of the early version of ‘The Pictures on My Wall’.

This album is being reissued to coincide with a 40th anniversary UK tour which starts tonight in Sheffield. It will be released on 18 February 2022.

Peter Jackson would love to offer an ‘extended cut’ of The Beatles Get Back

At yesterday’s global premiere of the IMAX presentation of The Beatles Get Back: The Rooftop Concert (attended by SDE in London), director Peter Jackson revealed that he would love to offer an extended cut of the full Get Back documentary that would add three to four hours of footage, including full length performance clips and “important conversations” that deserve to be heard.

He urged fans to petition Disney and Apple Corps, if this is something they would like to see, since he indicated that Disney may be reluctant to allow him to do this.

Jackson also revealed that, as part of the research for his editing process, he and his team interviewed as many people as they could, who were there at the time, so he could understand “the truth” of the events that took place, including during the famous Rooftop Concert sequence. He told the audience that he thought if they were going to interview all these people, they may as well film them “for posterity”. In yesterday’s live interview with Jackson, which was broadcast around the world to various IMAX cinemas, he showed a clip of the infamous PC Ray Dagg (the policeman who tried to stop the concert) being interviewed on the top of 3 Savile Row, which would have taken place a few years ago. Peter said that if/when Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original Let It Be was issued on DVD or blu-ray, he hoped such interviews might form part of the bonus material.

Fans wait for the IMAX screening to start (click image to enlarge)

Other points of interest that came out of the interview:

  • ALL Let It Be filmed footage has been restored and handed back to Apple for future use, not just what Jackson needed for his documentary.
  • He said that the isolated audio feed from the vox pop interviews on the street confirmed that The Beatles were indeed very loud, contrary to opinions which thought their equipment/amps would not have made such a racket. People had to “speak up” to be heard over the noise
  • Peter offered much praise to original director Michael Lindsay-Hogg for his direction and for the impressive 10-camera set-up for the rooftop concert, although he jokingly pointed out that the hidden camera in the reception area of 3 Savile Row was the “worst hidden camera ever” since it was hidden in a big white “garden shed” and was rather obvious (there’s a few shots of it in the documentary).
  • Lindsay-Hogg was “herding cats” much of the time and Jackson was impressed by his patience, saying that he would have read the “riot act” to The Beatles a few times if he’d been the director. Jackson also expressed incredulity that any grand concert event could have been organised in time (as is talked about constantly during the Get Back doc) because while he has “hundreds of people” helping him on set when he makes films, Lindsay-Hogg appeared to have a team of “two people”.
  • Jackson made the point that The Beatles we see performing up on the rooftop are the Fab Four from the Cavern Club and Hamburg rather than the group filmed at Shea Stadium, for example. Like the early days in Liverpool, this was a lunchtime performance and indeed, John Lennon jokes a few times about taking requests, which is something they used to do at the Cavern.

SDE can confirm that this special one-hour ‘Rooftop Concert’ (not ‘Rooftop Performance’, as the audio stream is branded) is identical to what is in the full Get Back documentary. It is not a special re-edit. All the interviews with people are still in the cut. It does start with the intro at the very beginning of Get Back – which gives you the potted history of The Beatles – and then cuts to the activity on 30 January 1969. The post-Rooftop footage remains (i.e. listening to playback and recording bits of ‘Two of Us’, ‘The Long and Winding Road’ and ‘Let It Be’).

Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat vinyl error update

Cat Stevens has updated fans with details regarding replacing the incorrectly pressed vinyl in the Teaser and the Firecat box set.

If you recall, the vinyl record that was supposed to feature alternate versions of the album tracks actually included the remastered version of the original album.

In a post on Instagram, Yusuf says:

“Universal have sorted out the existing issue with LP1 on the Teaser and the Firecat super deluxe edition box set, they request all fans who purchased the box set to email OperationsSupport@umusic.com to request a replacement LP”.

Fans need to include proof of purchase/ownership which can be any of the following: “sales receipt / email confirmation / screen grab / photo of you and your box set” along with name and address.

The replacement disc will ship in a plain white sleeve, so you need to keep hold of your existing LP jacket and inner sleeve. Yusuf says that “discs are being manufactured now and will be ready to ship by early February”.

There appears to be no requirement to send back the incorrect LP.

Richard Thompson / Guitar, Vocal reissue

Guitar, Vocal: A Collection Of Unreleased and Rare Material 1967-1976 was a Richard Thompson rarities collection first issued in 1976.

The album featured (at the time) unreleased music from Fairport Convention, music recorded with Richard’s wife Linda Thompson and as songs recorded as a solo artist.

Guitar, Vocal was originally issued after Richard and Linda announced their retirement from the music business, but of course the pair returned in 1978 with First Light.

The album now being reissued as a 2LP vinyl set by Universal Music and comes with a download card. It’s released on 25 March 2022.

The Beatles Rooftop Concert coming to streaming

The famous ‘Rooftop Concert’ – The Beatles’ last live performance on the roof of 3 Savile Row, London on 30 January 1969 – is coming to streaming as a standalone live album.

Of course, this iconic event features in Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s Let It Be and Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back but in both documentaries the music is interrupted by cut-aways to vox pop interviews on the street below and policeman wishing to gain entry to 3 Savile Row!

Now, for the first time, the complete audio has been mixed in stereo and Dolby Atmos by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, which means fans will hear all of the music and chatter during the 40-minute set with none of the interruptions.

The Beatles perform live in public for the last time on the roof of 3 Savile Row, 30 January 1969

While there is no confirmation of any physical product at this stage, this announcement surely all but guarantees this will happen and SDE expects this to be issued on CD and vinyl (and possibly blu-ray) – with or without accompanying video – later this year. Controversially, only one track from the Rooftop Concert was included last year’s Let It Be box set, which was widely put down to Disney having contractual exclusivity thanks to their deal with Apple to host the Get Back ‘three-part event’.

Get Back: The Rooftop Performance is available for global streaming tonight at 9pm PST / 12am EST (which is tomorrow at 5am GMT).

Neil Young’s music is pulled from Spotify

Spotify has now removed most of Neil Young’s music from its streaming platform after the Canadian-American musician ordered his management and record label to set those wheels in motion earlier this week.

Young had accused Spotify of becoming a “damaging force via it’s public misinformation and lies about COVID”. This is a reference to the platform hosting The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Rogan’s views on the pandemic and vaccination are “unfactual, misleading and false” in the view of Young, who says that the young “24-year-olds” who listen to Spotify are “impressionable and easy to swing to the wrong side of the truth”.

In a post on his website yesterday, Neil admitted that he alone didn’t actually have the power to make Spotify remove his music and that he needed the support of his record label Warner-Reprise and Merck Mecuriadis and Hipgnosis (who own part of his publishing). This support was forthcoming, which underlines the strength of both of those relationships and backs up what Mecuriadis often says when he does a deal to buy publishing from musicians – that he is on the side of the artist and will act with integrity. Young thanked both for their support (and Universal Music), pointing out that losing 60 percent of worldwide streaming income was a “very big deal”.

Paris 1989 – The Classic Acoustic Broadcast, a dodgy-looking grey market live recording, is the only Neil Young album available on Spotify right now

Neil had, earlier this week, given the streaming platform an ultimatum: “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” and even though they wouldn’t see it this way, Spotify have effectively chosen Rogan. In a statement, they said:

“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators,” it said.

“We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid since the start of the pandemic.”

No musician, publisher or record label is going to enter your property and remove your CDs, vinyl or music box sets

Paul sinclair, SDE

Of course, more than anything, this episode is a reminder that music being available on streaming cannot be taken for granted. No musician, publisher or record label is going to enter your property and remove your CDs, vinyl or music box sets but for those that rely on either paid or free streaming, those albums are not yours – you don’t own them. At any time, the music itself can become a pawn in in the politics or machinery of the music industry and can disappear. It can be withheld or withdrawn for a multitude of reasons, whether they be financial, moral or legal.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out but I think we can all agree with Neil Young when he says “Music is our life. It is sacred”. Feel free to leave a comment, but please note this is not the forum to have a debate about COVID.

Keith Richards / Main Offender reissue

Keith Richard’s 1992 album Main Offender is being reissued in March across four physical formats, including a five-disc super deluxe box set.

All formats feature a remastered edition of the album (overseen by the original producer Steve Jordan) while the 2CD deluxe edition and the five disc (3LP+2CD) deluxe box set offer a bonus album Winos Live in London ’92.

The Main Offender deluxe box contains 3LP+2CD, a book and various other ‘bits’ (click image to enlarge).

The box set contains the album pressed on ‘smoke-coloured’ vinyl and the Winos Live in London ’92 album pressed on 2LP (also on smoke-coloured vinyl). That content is then repeated in the box on two CDs, giving the five discs in total. On top of that there is ‘stuff’ that includes an 88-page leather-bound book, and various items of memorabilia such as a Main Offender plectrum, a bumper sticker, posters, a Main Offender backstage pass and more.

The box is £170 (!) – although ‘only’ £120 in Germany – which makes the two-CD version with all the audio, in casebound book packaging, at £17 seem like a bargain! This re-release is also available on single LP black vinyl and single remastered CD. If you want to spend even more money, Keef’s store has a £250 super deluxe with a special presentation case and a print or a £300 edition signed by photographer Dewey Nicks (not Keith!).

Main Offender is reissued on 18 March 2022, via BMG.

Daryl Hall / Before After

Daryl Hall will release a new retrospective of solo work in April called Before After.

Drawing from 35 years of recordings, Before After offers highlights from Daryl Hall’s five studio albums (Sacred Songs (1980) Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine (1986), Soul Alone (1993), Can’t Stop Dreaming (1996) and Laughing Down Crying (2011). ‘Dreamtime’ from his second album is of course the notable big solo hit.

‘Can We Still Be Friends?’ Live From Daryl’s House

Sitting alongside the studio recordings in Before After are a significant number of live performances from Hall’s Live From Daryl’s House online music programme, which celebrates its 18th year in 2022. These include exciting collaborations such as ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’ with Dave Stewart and ‘Can We Still Be Friends?’ with Todd Rundgren.

In total, Before After contains 30 tracks and these were selected and sequenced by Daryl Hall. This new compilation will be released on 1 April 2022, via Sony’s Legacy Recordings. There’s no vinyl version.

Elvis Costello / Spike 2LP gatefold reissue pressed on green vinyl

Elvis Costello’s 1989 album Spike is to be reissued as a special limited edition 2LP green vinyl pressing in March.

The record was notable for being Costello’s first album without the Attractions since his 1977 debut, My Aim is True, and for being the first long-player to feature the fruits of his writing sessions with Paul McCartney (Spike was issued four months before Macca’s own Flowers in the Dirt, in February 1989).

The McCartney/MacManus penned ‘Veronica’ was the lead single and reached number 19 in the Billboard Hot 100. It remains Costello’s biggest hit in the US. Album track, ‘Pads, Paws and Claws’ is the other Macca collaboration on Spike.

Elvis Costello plays ‘Veronica’ for Warner Brothers employees out on their patio, June 6 1989

The album was Elvis Costello’s first for Warner Bros. and was produced with T Bone Burnett and Kevin Killen with sessions taking place in Dublin, New Orleans, Los Angeles and London. Other tracks include ‘Deep Dark Truthful Mirror’, ‘Let Him Dangle’, ‘Tramp The Dirt Down’ and ‘God’s Comic’.

Like Brutal Youth in 2020, Spike is being issued across two vinyl records for the first time which makes a lot of sense when you consider the original vinyl contained 60 minutes of music! This actually allows for the reinstatement of song ‘Coal-Train Robberies’, which was omitted from the original vinyl, only appearing on cassette and CD (as the penultimate track).

The new 2LP set comes packaged in a gatefold sleeve and the records are pressed on light green vinyl, a shade personally chosen by Elvis Costello, we are assured. These are numbered and limited to 2500 copies worldwide.

This limited 2LP vinyl reissue of Spike is released on 4 March 2022 via Music On Vinyl. Pre-order from the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Meat Loaf dies at 74

Sad news this morning as family and representatives of Meat Loaf have confirmed his death.

Born Marvin Lee Aday, the American singer and actor sold over 60m albums worldwide during his career and 1977’s Bat Out Of Hell remains one of the biggest selling albums of all time. ‘I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ was the lead single from 1993’s Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back in to Hell and was number one virtually everywhere, spending seven weeks at the top of the UK chart between October and early December 1993.

Rest in Peace Meat Loaf. Leave your thoughts and tributes in the comments.
