Imagination featuring Leee John / 40 Years

A mammoth 17CD box set, called 40 Years, celebrates the output of British soul/funk trio Imagination and samples some of the solo work of Leee John, the band’s singer / keyboard player.

Best known for singles ‘Body Talk’ and ‘Just An Illusion’, Imagination emerged in the early 1980s worked with producers such as Tony Swain/Steve Jolley and Arthur Baker and had tracks remixed by the likes of David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, and others. There were seven studio albums and two remix albums and all of them are included in this new box set (including 2016/17’s Retropia which was released as ‘Imagination featuring Leee John’).

The second half of the box takes in some of Leee John’s solo work (there’s not a lot of it) before moving into ‘bonus CD’ mode with a plethora of remixes, unreleased tracks and live cuts.

40 Years has been “conceived and personally curated” by Leee John, and he’s signed some prints for a limited version. Reflecting on the era, John says: “The ‘80s were such special times in many ways, especially in the evolution of music technology, with sequencers, synthesisers, computers, samplers, and with music available on multiple formats including vinyl, cassettes to CD. By the time we got to the ‘90s and noughties with iPods and iPhone, the whole platform and generation of the music industry had vastly changed”.

40 Years is a 17CD box set featuring the music of Imagination and Leee John (click image to enlarge)

The box set has 189 tracks in total across the 17 CDs which is surely more Imagination than you could ever imagine owning. Nevertheless, it’s less than £70 and is signed by the man himself, so that’s little more than £4 per CD and there’s surely some cracking remixes included.

40 Years is released on 10 February 2023, via Edsel Records.

The Flaming Lips / Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

The Flaming Lips’ 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is to be reissued as 6CD and 5LP 20th anniversary box sets, with both featuring demos, B-sides, radio sessions and more.

The American band’s 10th studio outing,Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots was their first since 1999’s breakthrough album The Soft Bulletin and reached number 13 in the UK album chart. It earned widespread critical acclaim for its electronic creativity and meshing of ideas and styles.

There’s an impressive 100 tracks on the 6CD deluxe edition which, refreshingly, is well-priced and doesn’t contain any vinyl records! Half of those tracks are previously unreleased. Content includes the two EPs issued at the time of the album and a pair of live concerts from Boston in 2002 and London in 2003. The 5.1 surround mix, originally on the DVD-A does not feature.

The 5CD deluxe edition of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (click image to enlarge)

Inevitably, the 5LP vinyl deluxe edition can’t match the content of the CD set. It offers 56 tracks in total, with 30 previously unreleased and the label claiming 40 on vinyl for the very first time. Vinyl fans also have to wait, since the vinyl box isn’t released until April 2023, whereas the CD set is coming next month! Full track listings can be found below.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots will be released as a 6CD set on 25 November 2022, via Warner Records. The vinyl follows on 14 April 2023.

Erasure / 2CD deluxe edition

Erasure’s self-titled 1995 album will be reissued as an expanded 2CD deluxe edition in November.

The band’s seventh album was produced by Thomas Fehlmann (of The Orb) and Gareth Jones and featured the singles ‘Stay With Me’ and ‘Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer’s Day)’, both of which were top 20 hits in the UK. ‘Rock Me Gently’ was issued in some European countries.

Despite the success of the singles, the album was the band’s first not to reach number one in the UK since The Circus peaked at number six in 1987. Their impressive run of consecutive chart-topping studio albums (The Innocents, Wild!, Chorus and I Say I Say I Say) was over, as Erasure peaked at number 14.

The Erasure 2CD expanded edition comes in ‘casebound book’ packaging

This reissue is consistent with recent deluxe sets and comes in ‘casebound book’ packaging with new sleeve notes and a bonus CD of B-sides, demos, remixes and live recordings. There’s also four brand new remixes which may or may not be cause for trepidation…

Erasure is released as a 2CD set on 18 November 2022, via Mute / BMG. There is no vinyl edition at present.

The 6CD or 5LP+7″ box set offers remastered versions of both studio albums as well as a plethora of unreleased outtakes, live recordings, demos, alternate versions (the extent of the bonus material depends on which of the four physical editions you plump for).

This set does, of course, follow on from last year’s Feel Flows: The Sunflower and Surf’s Up Sessions 1969-1971 and was produced by the same team (Mark Linett and Alan Boyd).

The Sail On Sailor:1972 6CD deluxe set offers by far the most audio (click image to enlarge)

The 6CD super deluxe offers two discs of both remastered albums, with bonus tracks, and then two CDs of the band Live at Carnegie Hall on 23 November 1972 (1st and 2nd sets). The final two discs are Sessions and ad-hoc tracks. In total, there are 120 tracks of which 80 are previously unreleased. It comes packaged as a 48-page book, which looks to be consistent in terms of dimensions with the Feel Flows and Pet Sounds 50th anniversary deluxe CD editions (see image above).

The 5LP vinyl version offers significantly less material, 53 tracks in total, with the focus being on the two studio albums, and the Carnegie Hall date, with the latter’s two sets awkwardly spread across two-and-a-half vinyl records. The bonus tracks are on the seven-inch single and what is side 10 of the 5LPs.

The 5LP+7″ single edition of Sail On Sailor: 1972 (click image to enlarge)

There are two further physical editions, a 2LP+7″ variant which offers the two remastered albums (LPs 1 & 2 from the box) and the seven-inch single from the bigger set which features Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairytale). This EP was originally given away with the Holland album in early 1973.

The 2CD deluxe repeats what’s on the 2LP+7″, but adds a further 18 bonus tracks culled from the box thanks to the larger capacity of the optical discs. This 45-track physical format almost matches the audio count on the 5LP box and therefore could be a very attractive proposition for Beach Boys fans on a budget.

Sail On Sailor: 1972 will be released on 2 December 2022 (was 18 November 2022).

Lindsey Buckingham at the London Palladium: SDE review

It’s one of life’s mysteries why Fleetwood Mac singer and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham has only enjoyed a couple of hit singles as a solo artist in over four decades, when the band that was his day job for so long were regularly successful in that regard.

The uninitiated might conclude he keeps his catchier compositions for the band and was more experimental and less commercial on his solo albums. While it’s true Buckingham enjoyed the freedom to go off-piste a bit more outside of the constraints of Fleetwood Mac, his solo records have plenty of songs that would surely have been hits if released under the Mac moniker. His delayed date at the London Palladium offered the 73-year-old (it’s his birthday today!) a chance to remind people of this fact, with a few crowd-pleasing nods to the past.

It’s certainly been a tough three or four years for Buckingham, having been ousted, in 2018, from the band he and Stevie Nicks transformed in 1975 and soon after having a very serious health scare (open heart surgery). These two life-changing events would have taken their toll on him both physically and mentally and it seems Lindsey’s marriage was collateral damage, after his wife Kristen filed for divorce last year, but more recent reports suggest they’re working on it.

I guess there’s nothing like getting on stage and playing music to help forget your troubles and that’s exactly what Lindsey and his tight three-piece band did on Saturday evening, playing a almost two hours of songs from both his solo and Fleetwood Mac catalogue.

Buckingham looked well enough, very slim in the classic rocker’s garb of blue jeans, black jacket and boots, and with a full head of grey hair. He said very little during the performance, so anyone expecting a Springsteen-esque night of stories and songs (I’m not sure anyone was expecting that) would have be disappointed. The music did the all the talking.

I avoided looking at set lists in advance and hadn’t actually played much Lindsey solo output for a while, so the evening unfolded wonderfully, as I remembered forgotten gems and occasionally had to work hard to place certain songs on their respective albums.

The Californian singer-songwriter opened with ‘Not Too Late’ from 2006’s Under The Skin before hitting a raucous ‘In Our Own Time’ from 2011’s Seeds We Sow. ‘Soul Drifter’, from 1992’s wonderful Out Of The Cradle, followed and was the first song of the evening that embraced that truly commercial pop-rock sound that Fleetwood Mac are known for. Not long after, Buckingham would deliver ‘Big Love’ soundalike ‘Doing What I Can’ from the same album, but unfortunately he didn’t treat the audience to ‘Countdown’ the irresistible first single from the same record. Shame.

‘I Must Go’ from Lindsey’s 1984 long-player Go Insane starts off sounding like a bit of a racket but becomes fantastically involving, with that hypnotic chorus. It was an incredible live rendition and the whole thing is bonkers in the very best way possible.

Lindsey is of course a virtuoso guitar player and his finger-picking style was dominant all evening with him changing guitars virtually every song. A solo section saw the band retreat as a single spotlight fell on Buckingham and he delivered a stunning sequence of songs, starting with the languid and beautiful ’Trouble’, a rare bona fide hit (in the US) from his 1981 album Law and Order. The brilliant Fleetwood Mac track ‘Never Going Back Again’, from 1977’s Rumours followed and Lindsey teased the audience by slowing it right down in places and playing with his vocal delivery, but the guitar phrasing and the melody were largely intact for what was one of the evening’s many high points. It was no surprise to hear ’Big Love’ from 1987’s Tango in the Night and, as expected, it was in its familiar acoustic guise (he still did the heavy breathing outro!).

The band were back on for a handful of songs from Lindsey Buckingham’s most recent, self-titled solo album, the highlight being the non-more catchy ‘I Don’t Mind’ which sounds sweet and enticing, like a Tango in the Night outtake.

Four Fleetwood Mac songs ended the main set including two more from Rumours, ‘Second Hand News’ and ‘Go Your Own Way’, although for this writer the highlight was ‘Tusk’, the amazing title track from that follow-up to their 1977 Goliath. It sounded massive, thanks incredible drumming and sound-filling samples from keyboard player Michael Kiyoka.

The encore featured ‘Go Insane’ from 1984 followed by the moving ‘Love Is Here To Stay’ from the very underrated 2017 Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie album. Buckingham and the band signed off with the delicate and lullaby-like ‘Time’, another track from the new album.

It was a special evening, although depressingly, there was a few empty seats in the Grand Circle of the Palladium. Hopefully that can just be put down to transport issues (there was a train strike in London on Saturday evening).

On a more positive note, Lindsey was in fine voice and the rumours of vocal chord damage during his life-saving surgery in early 2019 seem to have been unfounded; he sang beautifully all night. The performance was even more remarkable since it seems that Lindsey was not feeling 100 percent and the rest of this European tour was hastily cancelled yesterday (Sunday, 2 October) due to “ongoing health issues”. Bitter news for fans waiting to see him in Glasgow, Liverpool and Dublin, especially after the original Spring 2022 dates were postponed when Buckingham went down with COVID-19. We can only wish him well and hope he returns to Europe and the UK soon.

Duran Duran vinyl reissues

Astronaut‘s UK debut on vinyl • Coloured vinyl in the USA, black vinyl everywhere else • No Pop Trash! • RCM includes bonus track

BMG follow up their CD reissues of some of Duran Duran’s ‘later period’ albums with a wave of 2LP vinyl releases. The albums in question are Astronaut (2004), Red Carpet Massacre (2007) and All You Need Is Now (2011).

There is good news and bad news on these, since in the US all three albums will be pressed on coloured vinyl, while everywhere else gets BLACK vinyl editions. Furthermore, in America these are part of the ‘RSD Essentials’ range, which restricts them to the indie community.

I believe this reissue is the first time that Astronaut has been available on vinyl outside the US. The US version is a 2LP white (‘milky clear’) vinyl set, and ex-US is black.

Red Carpet Massacre from 2007 only ever got an extremely limited (2,000 units) 2LP vinyl release at the time. Sony didn’t even do this themselves, they licensed it out to Californian label Erika Records. It was pressed on red vinyl and featured the bonus track ‘Cry Baby Cry’. The new BMG pressing maintains the bonus track and is pressed on red vinyl (what they are calling ‘translucent ruby’) in the US and black vinyl everywhere else.

The 2LP vinyl pressing of All You Need Is Now is a magenta-coloured pressing in America-only

Finally, All You Need Is Now from 2011 is offered as a 2LP pink (‘magenta’) vinyl set in the US and black everywhere else. This was issued on black vinyl at the time and there was of course the ludicrously expensive Vinyl Factory box set, which I think is still the only place you can buy ‘Girl Panic!’ (David Lynch Remix) physically.

There’s no bonus tracks for either Astronaut or All You Need Is Now. The latter is the 14-track version. Pop Trash was issued on CD recently but for some reason isn’t included in this vinyl reissue programme.

All three of these albums are reissued on 25 November 2022 (was 11 Nov), via BMG (the same day as the 2LP ‘Complete Edition’ of Future Past is reissued). Before that Medazzaland is reissued on 2LP Neon Pink vinyl on 14 October for its 25th anniversary.

Like The Beatles? Meet The Analogues…

The Analogues are a Dutch band who pay homage to The Beatles by performing their later albums live on stage with pin-point accuracy, using analogue and period-accurate instrumentation. They don’t attempt to look like The Beatles, just to sound like them.

In the last six or seven years, they have performed Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt, Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and The White Album in full, live on stage. They are currently on tour and next week play a few more dates (including The London Palladium on Monday 3 October) where they will perform Let It Be and Abbey Road. SDE caught up with band member Felix Maginn to find out more…

SDE: Hi Felix, who are The Analogues and what do you do?

Felix Maginn: The Analogues are technically a tribute band, which is not a term we use a lot necessarily and what we do is we play The Beatles’ albums from 1966 to 1970, the records that The Beatles never performed live themselves – ‘the studio years’, so to speak. Obviously, there’s a lot of orchestration and stuff like that on these records which would have made it impossible for them to play at that time. There are quite a lot of Beatles cover bands, but they usually focus on the early Beatles stuff, when they were wearing the suits – but we focus on the later years and what makes us slightly different from other Beatles cover bands is that we play complete albums, so we would do a whole tour based around all of them. So we’ve done Magic Mystery Tour, Sgt. Pepper, we’ve done ‘The White Album’ and Abbey Road.

How many people are officially in the band, because obviously you need a lot of people on stage for certain songs, additional players, string sections, and all the rest of it?

Officially there’s five guys in the band. But then we have two other guys who come in to play some guitar and sing. Then behind us we have four horn players and a string quartet. A lot of these musicians play different instruments and you need a lot of people on stage, so it’s ‘hands on’ usually for everyone. It’s not like “this guy is Paul McCartney and this guy, John Lennon” –  it changes quite a lot.

Are you all multi-instrumentalists? You have the flexibility to swap around and play on different instruments?

Yeah, we swap a lot. And some guys are obviously a lot better than others!

The other thing that maybe sets you apart from other Beatles tribute bands is that there’s no ‘fancy dress’ element.

No. We really shy away from that. For us, it’s really about the music. We look at our project like it’s modern classical. So we would we would perform one of the albums and it’s as if you were going to listen to Beethoven, or whatever. It’s not about the guys on stage, it’s just about the music and we try and get as close as possible to the original. That’s what it’s all about.

You make it look so easy. A a song like ‘Blackbird’, for instance. That looks incredibly difficult to play and sing at the same time, but the band member that does that does a brilliant job.

Yeah, Diederik [Nomden] is great. He’s really, really musical. He’ll hear stuff right away, like “wait a minute, that note that the horn players are playing that should be a different note”. Because it’s very difficult… When you listen to a Beatles record, you tend to focus on the whole, but we have to focus on the individual instruments on the track. And sometimes it’s very difficult to hear what’s actually being played. So it gets down to really nitty gritty details, and Diederik is really, really good at just picking out all the little different details.

How did the band go about understanding the arrangements so you can deconstruct them? Was that a case of looking at things like band proper band score transcriptions? Or was it listening to 5.1 mixes? There’s different ways you can do it…

Yeah, there’s several ways you can do it, but in general we focus on the recording; the recording that everyone knows – that’s what we want to hear. You might read something on session scripts, and it says “we had 12 horn players, and we had no couple of flutes” but you don’t hear them. People aren’t interested; what they want to hear is what they know. So what we do, we listen to the track and then we step back, and obviously, the basics of drums, the bass, guitars, piano…. while that’s not always straightforward, normally you can tell what it is. It’s all the little small things in between that are tricky. It’s basically a case of getting a piece of paper and a pencil and writing down bit for bit what is going on and and once you have all that, what we do is we actually record it again, we so we know what we’re doing is right. And only then can we play it. It’s such a lot of work [laughs].

There must be certain bits of information that you just don’t know. Even though The Beatles’ recording sessions have been well documented, there must be effects like whether they’ve used a Leslie speaker or special echos or delays in Abbey Road… where you’re just having to kind of guess.

Yes, some stuff you guess. There are some isolated tracks on the internet that you can find so you have isolated drums, isolated bass, isolated vocals etc. Knowing what they played at the time is helpful, so what type of instruments, what type of amps. We’ve played so much and because we have the equipment, you can try different guitars. You know, is it the Les Paul, or is it the Esquire? And wait a minute, Paul played that solo and he would have played that on a Casino, because those were his guitars… There’s a little bit of ‘Sherlock Holmes’, but eventually we get quite close.

That process, in itself, must be quite enjoyable?

The arguments are quite funny. Because people are saying, “I think it’s this”, “No, I think it’s that”. “What bass is he using?” “Is he using nylon strings”… It’s all those all those things that you drive you crazy, but it is good fun.

Hopefully, anyone who loves music, likes The Beatles, but by digging so deeply into it, what have you learned? Have you come away with some deeper insights?

I think with the four guys together, there was magic, you know, when those four guys played together. I think also the three voices, John, Paul and George, when they sang together, it really is ‘wow’ and that is really sweet. Some things just come along now and again, and they had the luck that everything just fell into place. And then with me, personally, I was always a big John fan, because he was a bit of a rebel and that would be more my thing. But since I’ve really got deeper into The Beatles and learnt stuff, I’ve come to really appreciate Paul McCartney. He is, without a doubt – and you can see it in the movie that came out [Peter Jackson’s The Beatles Get Back] – he is the driving force, usually for that band. He is the best musician, he just has control. John’s a little more off the wall. His strengths are more with his ideas about songs, rather than how he would actually play something.

The thing I always find really impressive about Paul McCartney is that he can play very complicated bass lines while singing a totally different vocal melody. There’s plenty of really good musicians that just don’t have that particular skill. He has so much musicality in that way, doesn’t he?

Yeah, it’s fantastic. I mean, I could never do it. He can split his brain and he can he can really, really do it.

You’ve got this gig coming up at The London Palladium (Monday 4 October] where you’re doing the Let It Be album and Abbey Road. Isn’t Let It Be cheating a little bit, because The Beatles did play that live, sort of, on the rooftop?

Yeah, sure. We do play a couple of songs that they do on the roof, but we try to stick to the stuff that that hasn’t been played, so the songs with the orchestration. The stuff that people never hear, except maybe when Paul might play it.

And what are the challenges with reproducing Abbey Road, which is a classic and sophisticated Beatles studio album?

The first thing was getting a Moog synthesiser, an original one, because we try and get everything as close as possible. And then when you have that, it’ll make one sound and then it will take you maybe about two hours to make a new patch to try and make the other sound. So we had to work out all those sounds that were on the songs on that album. So that was a that was a nightmare. And then we had to integrate a modern Moog with the old Moog that we have, so we could store the presets because I think in ‘Here Comes The Sun’ there are five different presets in that song, and you could never do that [switch presets] on the old one. You could do one setup and that’s it. So that was a bit of a nightmare, but it worked out fine in the end. I think that Moog is on a couple of songs, ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ and ‘Because’.

And apart from that, there’s a lot of stuff going on. I think the whole the whole medley on side two, when they chopped the tape up and started sticking stuff together, that was quite difficult to work out exactly what was going on. Who was playing what, the percussion stuff and where the guitar sounds changing. The first song, ‘Come Together’, I still think that sounds amazing today. If a band would release that today, it would still sound really good – it doesn’t sound like it’s 50 years old.

It’s such an unusual song that and it’s a good example of a track where it’s not that easy to understand what your ears are hearing, you know, with the echo and John’s handclaps etc.

That’s very true. Jon’s vocal on it is fantastic. And yeah, his original idea was a little different and Paul changed it to that swampy sort of groove that that that they have. They needed to feed off each other to try to get that to get that finished result.

So we can people expect to see an anvil on stage, for Maxwell’s Silver Hammer?

Yes, we have an Anvil! [laughs]. It was actually quite a test to try and find an anvil that would come close to the sound that they used on the, on the album.

Don’t tell me you have been road testing dozens of different anvils? Please don’t tell me that [laughs]

We tested a few. Obviously, when you start, it’s like, “oh, wait a minute, this is too small” or “This is too big, we can never lift it!”. We had this we had this problem before when we play when we played ‘The White Album’, with ‘Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey’, which has a ringing bell which was a nightmare to try and find the right bell.

Tell me about your the vintage instrument collection the band has? A lot of people might ask if it is really necessary, since even Paul McCartney himself, samples stuff. So how much difference does it actually make?

It makes a definite difference. Like I said before, for me, the first time I played with these guys, it sounded like you were standing in the record, you know, when you play a 1964 Casino through an old AC30 or through an old Fender Twin (both amplifiers) you get that sound. The Beatles only a couple of different amps and the rest is all just a lot of different guitars, so we have a lot of Casinos and we have a Rosewood Telecaster, from 1971 that would have been from a similar batch to what George would have had. But it does make a difference, because obviously we have tried stuff, replica stuff and you hear it and you think “that’s good” but then when you hear the real thing, it’s like wait a minute, it does sound a lot better. I can understand why Paul doesn’t really need to do that, because Paul’s just playing his own songs and he probably just thinks “I want it to sound good”. And he can do whatever, he likes to his own songs. But obviously, we try and recreate that recording that they did.

The other thing with Paul McCartney is you always get the feeling that even though he’s one of the world’s richest musicians, he doesn’t want to take random string sections and other players with him on tour because a) it’s kind of a hassle, B) it costs a lot of money. And that and what that’s one of the things I wanted to pick up with you is the is, that with all the gear and the musicians, how do the economics of something like an Analogues tour work out?

On the production side it is very expensive, because we don’t want samples, we want a real string quartet and real horn players, because, at the end of the day, it does come really close to the sound on the album. And this is the thing that makes it different to all the other Beatles bands that are playing all these great songs – we do come really, really close to the sounds, and that was the mission from day one. And obviously, the project is quite expensive, but if you go to the show and your a Beatles fan, you won’t go home disappointed.

Everyone’s been to a concert where the sound just isn’t very good. For whatever reason, the mix on the night sounds a bit dodgy, whether it’s to do with the venue, or the guy sitting at the desk, or whatever. Having talked about how much effort you put into the recreation how do you make sure that on the night, it’s sounding exactly how it should sound?

We have an amazing crew, and we have a really good sound engineer. We also bring our own PA. These guys work really hard. They’re there in at maybe 11 or 12, and we don’t arrive until five, so that they’re already really busy doing all the setup. Our crew could probably play the show better than we do.

Let’s just finish off talking about a new album you’ve recorded called The Analogues Sideshow. That’s something a little bit different. Tell me about that.

Well, we were obviously we’re stuck with lockdown and no more shows. And I remember sitting with all this equipment and stuff and thinking “Okay, so what are we going to do?” Everyone has a songwriting background, because we all come from bands, so we thought, why don’t we throw in a few ideas that we have around, let’s just record something. So we we ended up recording, using all this old equipment that we have and it turned out quite well. We didn’t do it to sound like The Beatles, but we did it in a style that would have been, you know, maybe 1971 or 1972… something that would have come out at that time, maybe like Badfinger or something like that. So that’s the way we approached it.

Thanks to Felix Maginn of The Analogues who was talking to Paul Sinclair for SDE.

The Analogues play Abbey Road and Let It Be at the London Palladium on Monday 3 October 2022. Tour dates and tickets are here. The Sideshow album is out now.

Now Yearbook 85

The NOW Yearbook series continues and returns to the 1980s for Now Yearbook 85.

If 1984 was the best year in pop, then this compilation reminds us that 1985 was almost as good, with post-Live Aid Queen opening in strident fashion with ‘One Vision’, newcomers a-ha almost reaching number one in the UK with ‘Take On Me’, and Tears For Fears deciding to ditch the bedsitter synth-pop, get the guitars out and go ‘global’ with ‘Shout’ and Everybody Wants To Rule The World’.

There’s a ludicrous number of MASSIVE songs here including Eurythmics‘ only UK chart-topper ‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)’, Phil Collins and Phil Bailey’s ‘Easy Lover’, The Power Station’s ‘Some Like It Hot’ (along with Arcadia’s ‘Election Day’!), Foreigner’s ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’, Go West’s ‘We Close Our Eyes’ and the title track from Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s debut (the only single not to get to number one in the UK from that album).

The 4CD deluxe hardcover book edition of Now Yearbook ’79 (click image to enlarge)

Frankie label-mates Art of Noise pop-up on CD 4 with ‘Close (to the Edit)’ and the same disc offers a hero’s welcome to Paul Hardcastle’s ’19’, sticks bananas up the tailpipe of Harold Faltermeyer’s classic ‘Axel F.’, sympathises with Colonel Abrahams’ predicament in the legendary ‘Trapped’, and says “I’m not sure” to The Smiths‘ questioning ‘How Soon Is Now’.

Sting’s excellent ‘If You Love Somebody Set Them Free’ is on here, although that wasn’t the big hit you might remember, while Midge Ure’s ‘If I Was’ did, of course, get to number one in Britain. There will surely be a full public enquiry into how Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ DOESN’T end up on a compilation celebrating 1985 (especially one that that is released in 2022). Yes, the meteorological #20 hit ‘Cloudbusting’ is included, but COME ON!?

Also where is Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’? That’s another major omission but presumably the NOW team requested it and said ‘Please’, only to be refused. Disappointing.

The 3LP green vinyl edition of Now Yearbook 85

There’s more from the ZTT ‘songbook’ courtesy of Propaganda’s ‘Duel’ on CD 3 along with songs from Howard Jones (‘Things Can Only Get Better’), Stephen Duffy’s hit (‘Kiss Me’), Nik Kershaw’s ‘Wide Boy’, Fine Young Cannibals’ ‘Johnny Come Home’ and King’s ‘Love and Pride’.

There’s loads more (79 tracks on the 4CD set) so check out the full track listings below. As usual the formats are: 4CD in posh hardcover book (limited), 3LP coloured vinyl (in this case, green vinyl and like the deluxe 4CD set, it’s limited) and standard 4CD edition (in the cheap card sleeve).

Now Yearbook 85 will be released on 4 November 2022.

David Bowie / Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory

The much rumoured and long-awaited box set focusing on David Bowie’s 1971 album Hunky Dory will be released in November. It’s called Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory and will be a 4CD+blu-ray deluxe set.

The collection is similar in presentation and content to 2019’s Conversation Piece. It celebrates the 12 months running up to the release of the Hunky Dory in December 1971, via home demos, BBC radio sessions and live and studio recordings.

CD 1 takes in early demos, CDs 2 & 3 explore David Bowie’s appearances on BBC Radio at this time with John Peel In Concert type content, while the fourth CD delivers alternate mixes, singles and ‘versions’.

The blu-ray is all hi-res stereo-only, with the exception of one track: ‘Life On Mars (2016 mix)’ which is in 5.1 and stereo. This disc has an alternate version of the Hunky Dory album made up of different versions of each track (‘An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory‘). This sits alongside the 2015 remaster (from the Five Years box) and a Bob Harris ‘Sounds of the 70s’.

A Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory is a 4CD+blu-ray deluxe set (click image to enlarge)

In total the new set offers 48 previously unreleased tracks/demos from the period. This set comes as a 100-page hardback book featuring exclusive memorabilia and photos. There’s also a 60-page replica composite of Bowie’s notebooks from the era featuring handwritten lyrics, costume drawings, recording notes and set lists.

Sleeve notes have been written for the release by Bowie expert Tris Penna, along with contributions from Hunky Dory co-producer Ken Scott, lifelong Bowie friends Geoff MacCormack and George Underwood, singer Dana Gillespie, guitarist Mark Pritchett, Friars Aylesbury promoter David Stopps, publisher Bob Grace and photographer Louanne Richards.

A Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory will be released on 25 November 2022. A vinyl version of the alternative version of Hunky Dory (from the blu-ray) will be released on 24 February 2023 (was 10 February)

That Petrol Emotion / Every Beginning Has A Future: An Anthology 1984-1994

Edsel will release Every Beginning Has A Future in November, a 7CD band-curated Anthology that bookends the decade in the spotlight of That Petrol Emotion.

The band were London based but originally from Northern Ireland and had an American singer in Steve Mack. They never quite had any hit singles (1987’s ‘Big Decision’ came closest stalling at #42) but their second album Babble was criticallly acclaimed at reached number 30 in the UK album charts.

This new 7CD set features all five albums (Manic Pop Thrill (1986), Babble (1987), End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues (1988), Chemicrazy (1990) and Fireproof (1993)).

Every Beginning Has A Future: An Anthology 1984-1994 is a 7CD box set (click image to enlarge)

There’s a bonus disc devoted to Chemicrazy and the other albums offer extra tracks in the form of non-album B-sides, bonus tracks, remixes, live recordings and fan club only releases. A live album at the end completes the seven-disc set which in total delivers 121 tracks.

This comes with a 52-page book with sleeve notes by John Harris and rare images and photographed memorabilia supplied by the band. An Amazon UK exclusive SIGNED edition comes with five postcards signed by the original band members.

Every Beginning Has A Future: An Anthology 1984-1994 will be released on 25 November 2022, via Edsel.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers / Live at the Fillmore, 1997

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers famous 20-night residency at the Fillmore venue in San Francisco in 1997 is celebrated with a major archival release across four physical formats, including 6LP and 4CD box sets.

The band would vary their sets each night at the small venue with re-arranged versions of their hits, ‘deep cuts’, and many cover versions. Six of the shows were professionally recorded and this release features highlights of those performance.

The 6LP vinyl version of Live at the Fillmore, 1997 (click image to enlarge)

The 6LP vinyl box and 4CD collections both feature 58 tracks, 35 of which are covers! This is four hours of music in total.

The vinyl box comes with a 24-page large format booklet and plenty of ‘stuff’, such as three custom guitar picks, replica laminates, facsimile set lists, fan newsletter and an embroidered patch.

The 4CD set is a small box which includes a 32-page booklet. Perhaps surprisingly, you get some the same ‘stuff’ in this smaller and cheaper package (guitar picks, laminate and patch).

If all this is a bit too much, you can opt for the 2CD or 3LP vinyl editions which offer 33-track selections. If you think they may have dialled down the covers on these editions, think again! There’s still 18 cover versions, which is more than half the audio.

Live at the Fillmore, 1997 will be released on 25 November 2022.

Seal’s debut album reissued

4CD+2LP deluxe • No other physical formats • Trevor Horn’s Atmos Mix consigned to streaming

Seal’s self-titled debut album from 1991 will be reissued in November.

The Trevor Horn-produced long-player launched Seal to international success with songs like ‘Crazy’ (a transatlantic top 10 hit), ‘Future Love Paradise’ and his remake of ‘Killer’ (which he’d originally written and recorded with Adamski).

The album has been remastered for the reissue and Trevor Horn has created a Dolby Atmos Mix (his first, as far as I am aware). Sadly, Warner Music has chosen not to issue the Atmos Mix physically, which is rather frustrating. What they are offering is one big 4CD+2LP deluxe set; there is no other physical format.

The Seal 4CD+2LP deluxe edition (click image to enlarge)

The first CD in this large format set offers the remastered album, while the second and third discs deliver remixes and alternate versions from the various singles along with the so-called ‘Premix’ versions. These versions are early mixes that were available briefly on early pressings before they were replaced by Horn’s final mixes. CD 4 features the only unreleased content, a previously unreleased 13-track concert performance from Dublin in December 1991. The 2LP vinyl is not available separately and is part of this deluxe. It repeats the remastered album and side 4 is blank, so they’ve put an ‘etching’ on it…

It’s worth remembering that the Seal album has never been reissued in the UK. A CD+DVD deluxe was released in 2005 which included a 5.1 surround sound mix, but that was a US-only release. That mix remains unique to that 17-year old release. The non-physical Atmos Mix, effectively supersedes something that was never available in Britain in the first place!

The Seal 4CD+2LP deluxe is released on 4 November 2022, via Warner Music. I’d encourage you to ‘rate’ this Seal offering by using the widget at the top of this page.

Guns N’ Roses / Use Your Illusion box sets

Expensive box sets • No Atmos Mixes of the studio albums • Live concerts remixed • Lots of ‘stuff’ in the boxes • 2CD sets with exclusive audio

Guns N’ Roses are to reissue their 1991 albums Use Your Illusion I & Use Your Illusion II across nine different physical formats in November, including 7CD+blu-ray and 12LP vinyl+blu-ray super deluxe editions.

Both albums have been “fully remastered for the first-time ever”, from hi-res 96/24 transfers from the original stereo 1/2-inch analog masters. Use Your Illusion I includes an updated version of the single ‘November Rain’ which features a newly recorded 50-piece orchestra (this has been mixed by Steven Wilson, incidentally).

The 7CD+blu-ray super deluxe features both remastered albums, Live in New York (from the Ritz Theatre in May ’91) across two CDs, Live in Las Vegas (from the Thomas & Mack Center in January ’92) across three CDs. Both have been newly mixed from the multi-track tapes.

The bonus blu-ray video disc features the complete Live In New York concert film, “newly transferred from 35mm film prints to 4K UHD”. Boasting of a 4K transfer and then putting it on a standard 1080p HD blu-ray (which is effectively a 2K medium) is confusing and disappointing. A 4K UHD blu-ray and this standard blu-ray should have been included for the price being asked –  after all this happens all the time in £25 retail 4K film blu-ray releases and this CD box costs ten times that. The concert soundtrack offers Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 48/24 stereo.

Double-sided lithos slide in to the red and blue ‘reveal sleeves’ at the front and back of the super deluxe box sets

Talking of Atmos, notable by omission are any spatial audio mixes of the studio albums themselves. No Atmos, 5.1 or even hi-res stereo versions are included on the blu-ray. Also, there is no studio outtakes, demos on any of the formats.

The 12LP black vinyl box set features exactly the same audio content as the 7CD+blu-ray. Both studio albums are 2LP sets and Live in New York and Live in Las Vegas are both 4LP sets. The blu-ray is included with this vinyl package and is identical to the one in the CD box set.

The super deluxe editions are housed with a 100-page hardcover book and are designed with fancy red & blue ‘reveal sleeves’. These sets come with lots of ‘stuff’ like Conspiracy Inc. replica fan club folder (with membership card!), four Conspiracy Inc. 1991/1992 Use Your Illusion era replica fan club newsletters, 10 double-design lithos that reveals one of two unique images when inserted into the red & blue ‘reveal sleeves’, 8” x 10” photo prints (x7), four Use Your Illusion tour replica cloth sticky backstage passes (x4), a Ritz Theatre 5/16/1991 replica concert ticket (with the original misprinted date of 5/15/1991) and a 24”x36” band poster.

Despite the 12LP vinyl and 7CD sets costing over £400 and £250 respectively, the much cheaper 2CD editions of each album feature exclusive live audio not included in the bigger boxes. This is in the form of bonus discs with live highlights from the Use Your Illusion 1991 / 1992 tour including dates in Paris, London and Rio de Janeiro. So for example, if you are a CD collector and want ‘everything’ (in terms of audio) you have to buy three products: the 7CD+blu-ray super deluxe and both 2CD deluxe editions! That situation is unlikely to impress fans. The 2CD sets come with 24-page booklets.

Other formats are both albums remastered on 2LP black vinyl, a 4LP vinyl box set (D2C-only) and single CD remasters of Use Your Illusion I & II.

Use Your Illusion I & II will be reissued on 11 November 2022, via UMe/Geffen.
