Travis / The Boy With No Name vinyl reissue

Craft Recordings continue their Travis reissues with a vinyl re-release of the band’s 2007 album The Boy With No Name.

The album features two UK top 30 hits (in ‘Closer’ and ‘Selfish Jean’) and was their last for the Independiente label. A number of producers worked on the record, including Steve Orchard, Mike Hedges and Nigel Godrich.

‘Closer’ was the band’s last UK top ten single

“The Boy With No Name is a dense album,” Fran reflected. “Andy MacDonald, our A&R man fracked me hard, possibly a little too hard, for songs. As a result, there were many strong contenders for singles. ‘Battleships, ’‘Sailing Away,’ and ‘Big Chair ’are among some of which should have been released but never made it. As a result, it’s possibly our most eclectic album, packed with some of our most memorable songs.”

The vinyl reissue comes with a bonus seven-inch single which features ‘Sailing Away’, a ‘hidden’ extra track from the original CD.

The Boy With No Name is reissued on 28 May 2021.

Amazing footage with Raw Studio Mix of ‘Isolation‘

On the eve of the released of the super deluxe edition box set of John Lennon‘s 1970 album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, fans can hear a ‘Raw Studio Mix’ of the song Isolation set to some remarkable video footage which takes the viewer on a tour of John and Yoko’s home in Ascot, Surrey in the early Seventies, Tittenhurst Park.

The film was shot on 16 July 1971, which is actually closer to the release of Imagine than Plastic Ono Band, but whose complaining? It’s a fascinating piece of history.

Ten Years After / 1967-1974 repress

Out-of-print box now available once more

Originally issued at the very end of 2017, the Ten Years After box set, 1967-1974, was limited to just 1500 copies and thus went out of print fairly quickly. Over three years on and the 10CD package is being made available again via a limited repress.

This collection gathers long-players from the Chrysalis and Deram eras of the British blues/rock band and includes eight studio albums, one live album and a bonus disc of never before heard recordings from 1972 called The Cap Ferrat Sessions, which is newly mixed by producer Chris Kimsey. All the albums have been remastered from the original quarter-inch production master tapes.

‘Love Like A Man’ from 1970’s Cricklewood Green

The package previously came in hardcover book format but is now revised to a clamshell box which houses the 10 CDs in individual wallets and a perfect bound booklet with extensive sleeve notes by Chris Welch. These notes include extensive interviews with the remaining band members, Alvin Lee’s family, and there is additional recording notes by Kimsey.

The unreleased material – The Cap Ferrat Sessions – exists thanks to Alvin Lee’s wife, who discovered a box of recordings in their house in Spain. Chris Kimsey recorded and engineered these tracks originally (they formed part of the Rock N Roll Music To The World sessions) which is why Chrysalis Records turned to him to mix them for the first time.

Kimsey has set the record straight in terms of the quality of these newly-found tracks: “Alvin and the band were incredibly creative and abundant during this period. These re-discovered recordings were not rough demos, not rehearsals, but completed masters that did not make the album due to the time limitations of vinyl at the time. So these gems were left off. Mixing this in 2017 I began to study the parts, the playing, the response of each musician. It was amazing! It is what all great recordings are made of”.

This set now sells for £150+ on discogs so if you missed out the first time, now is your chance to add this to your collection for a fraction of that price.

RIP Jim Steinman

Sad news tonight, as we learn about the death of Jim Steinman. Best known for his work with Meat Loaf, and in particular the Bat Out Of Hell album, Steinman was a master when it came to overblown rock. There are many highs, although SDE would choose Bonnie Tyler‘s ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ as our favourite Steinman work. It’s impossible to get bored of that song.

The cause of Steinman’s death is currently unclear. Rest in peace.

The Pretty Things / Live at the BBC

Repertoire Records have been issuing BBC-related Pretty Things compilations for almost 20 years and in June are putting out their biggest collection yet, with a six-CD package called The Pretty Things Live at the BBC.

The label originally released a two-CD set in 2003 (called The BBC Sessions) and more recently, in 2015, a four-CD collection (The Pretty Things Live at the BBC). The new six-CD collection offers an expanded version of the same content with tracks performed on shows like Saturday Club, Top Gear (in the late 1960s) and John Peel’s Sunday Concert and Sounds of the ’70s, Radio Flashes and In Concert, in the following decade. The final disc in this collection also includes sessions on the Mark Lamarr Show in 2009 and with Marc Riley in 2018 (before returning to the 1960s for some bonus tracks).

The discs are packed full, with each offering over 70 minutes of audio. In total, there’s over seven hours of content to enjoy. The audio has been ‘restored and remastered’ by Eroc (Jon Astley did the 2015 set), and curator Colin Harper confirmed to SDE that this is anything but a quick rehash. He says: “There are around 50 additional tracks and all but 15 of the 2015 edition’s tracks have been sourced new from ‘flat masters’ – be they direct from the BBC or from various off-air sources, many uncirculating. The remaining 15 have been brought into line with the rest by the mighty Eroc’s quite extraordinary restoration and mastering. Sonically, this is a massive enhancement of the previous set.”

A 3LP white vinyl edition is also available

The box set collects three ‘digi-sleeved’ two-CD sets and Richard Morton Jack provides sleeve notes (which includes an interview with Phil May discussing the recordings) and Repertoire’s Chris Welch also interviews founder member guitarist Dick Taylor, who reminisces about the early days of the Pretty Things and pays tribute to Phil May who died in 2020).

As well as the CD package, there’s also a 3LP edition as well. Pressed on white vinyl, the triple-disc affair adopts a themed approach with three eras tackled by each record: R&B, Psychedelic and Hard Rock.

The Pretty Things Live at the BBC will be released on 23 July 2021 (was 25 June).

SDE on Peter Cetera and Prince

Reissue producer Vinny Vero stopped by SDE earlier today to answer some SDE readers’ queries about the forthcoming Peter Cetera six-CD box set that he has worked on.

One of the questions about Love, Glory, Honor & Heart: The Complete Full Moon & Warner Bros. Recordings 1981-1992, in the comments section of the original post, concerned the omission of the song ‘No Explanation’, which had originally featured on the 1990 soundtrack to the film Pretty Woman. Vinny addressed this directly:

Having worked at EMI when the “Pretty Woman” soundtrack was in full swing, I knew going into the box set that there might be some contractual issues regarding ‘No Explanation’. But I figured 30 years could mean that it might not matter. Wrong! The agreement between Warner Bros. and EMI at the time stated that ‘No Explanation’ can be included on a Peter Cetera credited greatest hits, or singles collection, only. It is not available to be a part of a repackaged or reissued edition of any Peter Cetera studio album. It cannot be included as an extra track or B-side of any future Peter Cetera single. Since there is no term stated in the agreement, the legal eagles at the label determined that it is not available to license for inclusion on the box set. Personally, I think that’s a big mistake.

The song ‘Love Assistant’ is also not included in the new box and Vero revealed that “Peter simply did not want to include it despite several attempts to change his mind”.

After a few eyebrows had been raised by SDE readers about the cover art, Vinny was also kind enough to reveal an original cover art proposal that was ultimately rejected by Cetera, who preferred the out-of-focus shot that they’ve gone with.

And there’s more! Peter Cetera also decided he wanted the actual cover art amended. The revised version is the image you can see at the top of this post, which features repositioned typography and loses the clock imagery.

The cover art previously published has been revised.

Love, Glory, Honor & Heart: The Complete Full Moon & Warner Bros. Recordings 1981-1992 will be released on the 28 May 2021.

Money Does Matter 2 Night

What on earth is going on at Sony’s Legacy Recordings outfit and the pricing strategy around the forthcoming Prince Welcome 2 America deluxe box set?

When this was announced last week, it took a while for the European prices to filter through, but when they finally did, the disparity between the cost of the product in Germany, France, Italy and the UK, and the price-tag in North America was unbelievable. Putting to one side the deal via Amazon France (now over), the cost of this 2LP+CD+blu-ray box on this side of the Atlantic was literally DOUBLE what it was stateside.

Prince / Welcome 2 America

If we get down to the nitty-gritty, on Amazon US, the price is $99, which is around £72, whereas in the UK Amazon are charging a whopping £149.99! And this isn’t just a weird Amazon anomaly either, because HMV in the UK are charging the same amount. Also, independent retailer Rough Trade in America can buy the box set from Sony at a wholesale price (or dealer price, as its known in the music industry) that allows them to sell it for $105, or around £76. Incredibly, the UK arm of the same business has to charge £174.99 for the same product, to make the margins required to keep the wheels turning on their business. That’s a cool £100 premium, for the same product! Even at the cheaper price, the set is arguably not great value, but doubling the cost makes it obscenely expensive and it’s very unfair to treat fans (and retailers) differently in this way. Never has the phrase ‘rip off Britain’ been so apt.

Just what exactly is going on? After some reasonably good and well-priced reissues – the Up All Nite With Prince 4CD+DVD box set gave you change from £30 – Sony appear to have really lost the plot with this Prince Welcome 2 America deluxe edition. They are, presumably, aware that we live in a global economy and consumers can see how much it is being sold for in other countries, but it appears as if they don’t care.

It’s absurd that in Britain, you can buy the deluxe edition of Welcome 2 America from Amazon in the USA, pay the ‘import fees deposit’ in advance, pay for shipping from America and the total cost is £94. That’s £56 cheaper than buying it locally.

The Bluetones: CD box set and vinyl reissues

Demon Music will are to put out a raft of Bluetones CD and vinyl releases, from the early part of the band’s career, with exclusives, signed items and coloured vinyl amongst them.

The Bluetones are from Heston in West London and arrived on the scene in 1995 with the top 40 single ‘Are You Blue Or Are You Blind?’. They followed this up with ‘Bluetonic’ and then ‘Slight Return’, which reached number two in the UK singles chart (it was technically a re-release). The success of ‘Slight Return’ helped the band’s debut album Expecting To Fly go straight to number one in February 1996.

Let’s talk about the 2021 reissues. First off, is a six-CD box set called Superior Quality Recordings. This spans the band’s first period of recordings – from 1994 to 2002 – and contains 93 tracks across the six discs.

It includes the first three albums – Expecting To Fly (1996), Return To The Last Chance Saloon (1998) and Science And Nature (2000) – a collection of pre-fame demos, The Early Garage Years, 45 non-album A and B-sides and rarities, and three previously unreleased demos (mastered for this compilation by Nigel Clark of Dodgy!).

The six CDs are presented in card wallets and the box is a two-part construction with an ‘inner drawer’ slotting into the outer slipcase. Superior Quality Recordings includes a booklet (which includes images of memorabilia from the band members’ own collections), five badges and best of all, initially, this box comes as a limited edition (of 1500 copies) with a print SIGNED by all four band members (the print is the cover of Expecting to Fly).

The band’s 1996 debut album Expecting to Fly is also being reissued as a 25th anniversary, lift-off lid, 3LP vinyl box set. This is pressed on 180g blue vinyl and features the album, bonus tracks and The Early Garage Years. The box also contains the 12″ x 12″ booklet from the original limited vinyl, as well as a note by 6Music DJ Steve Lamacq. Amazon have an exclusive edition of this vinyl box set that includes three extra four-track demos on a bonus 12-inch. A second CD box set will follow later this year.

A single, clear vinyl, album-only, gatefold edition of Expecting to Fly will also be available via indie stores.

Return To The Last Chance Saloon from 1998 is also being reissued on vinyl. The second album featured another Top 10 single, ‘Solomon Bites The Worm’, as well as ‘If…’ and ‘Sleazy Bed Track’.

The album is pressed on 180g red vinyl and the gatefold packaging recreates the limited edition version of the original vinyl which features a gatefold sleeve with two opening ‘wild west’ saloon doors affixed to the inside of the gatefold sleeve. SDE is liking this attention to detail!

Rod Stewart 1975-1978

The commercial peak of Rod Stewart is collected in a new five-LP vinyl box set called simply Rod Stewart 1975-1978. The set features Stewart’s first four Warner albums on vinyl and a bonus record of rarities.

All the albums in question – Atlantic Crossing (1975), A Night on the Town (1976), Footloose & Fancy Free (1977), and Blondes Have More Fun (1978) have been remastered and are back in print for the first time in quite a while.

This era features many of the singer’s best-known tracks, including ‘Sailing’, ‘I Don’t Want to Talk About It’, ‘I Was Only Joking’, ‘The First Cut Is the Deepest’, ‘You’re in My Heart’, ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?’ and ‘Hot Legs’.

The bonus LP is called Encores 1975-1978, is a collection of 10 outtakes selected from the recording sessions for all four albums. The first side features outtakes that were issued on the 2009 deluxe 2CD reissues of Atlantic Crossing and A Night On The Town (sadly that reissue campaign came to a prompt halt) while the second side offers five previously unreleased session outtakes from Foot Loose & Fancy Free and Blondes Have More Fun including a cover of ‘You Really Got A Hold On Me’ and the unreleased tracks ‘Silver Tongue’ and ‘Don’t Hang Up’.

The vinyl records come packaged in an iridescent box with Rod Stewart foil-stamped on the cover, his blonde shaggy haircut in gold and his leopard-print suit shimmering in silver!

Rod Stewart 1975-1978 will be released on 4 June 2021.

David Bowie / The Width of a Circle

Parlophone will issue what they are calling a ‘companion piece’ to Metrobolist, last year’s Tony Visconti remix of David Bowie‘s 1970 album The Man Who Sold The World. The new collection is a two-CD set called The Width of a Circle and features a combination of Ryko-era bonus tracks, BBC live recordings and new mixes, all from 1970.

The first CD features 14 tracks performed by David Bowie and The Tony Visconti Trio (a.k.a. The Hype) for John Peel’s The Sunday Show in February 1970 (the label are claiming that six of these are unreleased) while the second disc is very much an ‘odds and sods’ collection of material. It includes some bonus material first heard on CD back in 1989/1990 when Rykodisc began their Bowie reissue campaign.

Such tracks include 1970 single A-side ‘Holy Holy’, the single mix of ‘The Prettiest Star’ (although it’s included here in unreleased alternate mix form – “created for promotion in the US market”), both mono and stereo mixes of ‘London Bye Ta-Ta’ and the A and B-side mixes of ‘Memory of A Free Festival’.

In addition, this CD offers five tracks from a play (“The Looking Glass Murders aka Pierrot in Turquoise”) and five 2020 stereo mixes of some of the non-album material remixed by Tony Visconti. Four of those five are also available on a special 10-inch single (also called The Width of a Circle).

All this activity is to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK release of The Man Who Sold The World and to top it off, Parlophone are also putting out a picture disc of the standard album using artwork from RCA’s 1972 reissue. A picture disc with alternative artwork was previously issued for 2016’s Record Store Day.

The two-CD set of The Width of a Circle is presented as one of those DVD-sized, hardcover booksets – a format SDE quite likes even if we can’t recall ANY David Bowie product being issued in this style before. The book contains 104 pages of content.

There is no full vinyl equivalent of The Width of a Circle. Such a release would require a 4LP box and it’s reasonably likely that the label simply could not get such a product produced in the timescale required (see yesterday’s ‘Pressing Issue‘ vinyl production investigation). That does mean it won’t follow at some point, but for now, fans have to make do with just that 10-inch with a handful of new mixes and/or the picture disc.

The 10-inch single is exclusive to the David Bowie store, but the two-CD set and the vinyl picture disc are widely available from normal retail channels. These are released on 28 May 2021.

Black Sabbath / Sabotage super deluxe edition box sets

The 1975 Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, will be reissued as vinyl and CD super deluxe edition box sets, in June. The band’s sixth studio album was recorded amidst legal wranglings with their former manager – which is how the title came about.

The both box sets feature a newly remastered version of the album paired with a complete live show recorded during the 1975 tour. 13 of the 16 live tracks included are previously unreleased.

The four-CD box set features the studio album and live concert across three CDs with a fourth disc effectively a CD single. It features the single edit for ‘Am I Going Insane (Radio)’ and ‘Hole In The Sky’.

The 4LP vinyl super deluxe or Sabotage comes with a bonus 7″ single (click image to enlarge)

The vinyl box set features the same content across four vinyl records and those two extra tracks feature on a bonus seven-inch single, with artwork replicating the rare Japanese version of the single.

All this music is accompanied by sleeve notes in a 60-page book (CD version – the vinyl is a 40-pager) that tell the story of the album through quotes from band members and the music media along with rare photos and press clippings from the era.

Also included in both packages is a 1975 Madison Square Garden replica concert book and Sabotage 1975 tour poster.

Sabotage is released on 11 June 2021, via BMG.

The Marseille Contract stars Michael Caine, James Mason & Anthony Quinn

Roy Budd / The Marseille Contract (vinyl LP)

First time on vinyl for this film score to the 1974 crime thriller. Features Roy Budd’s signature action thriller jazz/crime sound and is relatively rare having only been on CD once, back in 1999. This is from Light in the Attic, so it should be good. Rough Trade in the UK have a blue vinyl edition. Bloody expensive, but comes in a tip on sleeve with OBI etc.

Old-style thick card sleeve where cover is printed first onto paper which is in turn then pasted onto the board (as opposed to printing directly onto card). These are generally accepted to be very high quality.

Joni Mitchell / The Reprise Albums 1968-1971

On 22 June this year Joni Mitchell‘s Blue will be 50 years old. To mark the occasion, Rhino is releasing a four album collection called The Reprise Albums 1968-1971, the next instalment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series.

The box set – available on CD and vinyl – will feature a new mix of Song To A Seagull (1968) and remastered versions of Clouds (1969), Ladies of the Canyon (1970) and Blue (1971).

The reason Song To A Seagull has been remixed is because “The original mix was atrocious,” according to Mitchell. “It sounded like it was recorded under a jello bowl, so I fixed it!”

The Reprise Albums 1968-1971 is available as a 4LP vinyl set or 4CD

The cover art for the new box features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period.

The notes included with The Reprise Albums 1968-1971 include an essay by singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. She writes: “In my opinion Blue is the greatest album ever made”.

It’s a fairly simple product choice, for fans. Either reasonably-priced 4CD edition or a frankly extortionate (at least in the UK) 4LP vinyl box set.

The Reprise Albums 1968-1971 will be released on 2 July 2021 (was 25 June 2021.

Prince / Welcome 2 America

The Prince Estate and Legacy Recordings are to issue Welcome 2 America a previously unreleased Prince album recorded in 2010. The album was “mysteriously archived” by Prince and features some of his only studio collaborations with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Chris Coleman, and engineer Jason Agel, with additional contributions from New Power Generation singers Shelby J., Liv Warfield, and Elisa Fiorillo and keyboardist Morris Hayes, who Prince also recruited to co-produce several tracks on the album.

In terms of chronology, if issued at the time, the album would have sat between 20Ten (2010) and Plectrumelectrum (2014).

Welcome 2 America is being issued on CD and 2LP vinyl, but a four-disc deluxe edition brings together CD, 2LP and blu-ray in a large format package.

The blu-ray is Welcome 2 America (Live at The Forum, April 28, 2011). In typical Prince style, he may not have bothered issuing the album, but he still embarked on a tour of the same name! This is the full show at the forum and it’s presented in stereo, 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos, and includes a generous 24 tracks from across Prince’s career; big hits, fan favourites and rare covers.

The deluxe edition is large format and features a 32 page 12″ x 12″ book, poster and an “embossed vellum envelope” of limited edition memorabilia all housed in a luxe, gold embossed package.

Sadly there’s no CD+blu-ray edition, which means if you want that blu-ray with the Atmos mix, the deluxe edition is your only option. At the time of writing Amazon France is by far the best deal for UK fans.

Over a year in the planning, we have refreshed and rebuilt the website to enhance the SDE experience for you. A fresh look and feel, new functionality and some personalisation have been developed to assist with the all-important three ‘D’s: Discover more great physical music, Discuss releases amongst like-minded fans and Decide what you will spend your hard-earned cash on (or not!).

For example, you will now have the ability to ‘rate a release’. Look out for this facility on selected posts. Logged-in users can give star ratings to products and then drill down to specifics like content, presentation and value for money. All the ratings feed into one overall ‘SDE reader rating’ which will be displayed on the top of the post, so there’s nowhere to hide for labels churning out disappointing product! Likewise, it’s a way to highlight our appreciation for superb and well thought out box sets and reissues.

Find content more easily

There will now be regular polls within SDE posts and a new content module, called ‘SDE Release Life Cycle‘. This will connect related posts together to allow you to easily move ‘through’ the life of a product (e.g. rumours, announcement, unboxing video, interview, review etc.). The goal here is to make it much easier to find relevant and related content. Check out how this works by viewing the first McCartney III post and looking at the panel on the right-hand column.

Individual posts will have more links to other content and a new area called ’Explore’ allows you to dig deep into SDE’s 10-year content archive via specific artists or certain eras. Explore topics will change to regularly (feel free to put in a request!)

Comments have now been completely overhauled. It’s now much easier to discuss and debate with other passionate music fans and you can finally ‘like’ other people’s comments and ‘pin’ and/or share them. Discussions will be properly nested so there should be no confusion over who is talking to whom!

SDE membership

The flagship new feature which will unlock much of this new functionality and enhance the day-to-day SDE browsing experience is SDE membership. This won’t cost anything and it is a simple three-minute process to sign up.

Think of it as your own personal ‘keycard’ giving you access to enhanced discussion, interaction and product feedback on SDE .

Being an SDE member allows you to leave comments, without having to sign in with username/email credentials each and every time. Everyone will have a fixed display name (username) which you can choose when registering. This will promote transparency and trust amongst the SDE community. We will all know – or get to know – who we are talking to. You can increase your standing by leaving thoughtful and constructive comments and see them ‘liked’ by others. Regulars will see their ‘mySDE’ profile status change over time from ‘SDE Reader’ to ‘SDE Fanatic’ to ‘SDE Legend’ (longstanding contributors will be assigned an appropriate status and won’t start from ‘zero’).

But signing up as an SDE member gives you more. Through the ‘mySDE’ profile panel you can control communications, indicate what you like and don’t like, so any SDE news or deal alerts will be tailored to your requirements. Hate vinyl? Simply click the ‘only CD’ preference and you’ll never be contacted about a 13LP vinyl box set again! You can also build your profile; add an image (show us ya face, why don’t you?), fill in some details in the bio and enjoy centralised access to all your recent comments activity.

There are many other new elements to the site, including improved release calendar, cleaner deals posts, new look ‘Out This Week’, the ability to share posts very easily and more. Ten years after the original website went live, I hope the new SDE is a solid foundation for the future and I welcome your feedback and ideas for further enhancements over time.

Yardbirds aka Roger the Engineer / super deluxe with signed print

The Yardbirds‘ 1966 self-titled album (also know as Roger the Engineer) will be reissued as a six-disc super deluxe edition featuring newly remastered mono and stereo versions of the album and various audio rarities, with signed editions available in the UK.

The album was recorded by the classic line up of Jeff Beck, Keith Relf, Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja and Paul Samwell-smith, and saw the band explore new sonic territories, pushing their blues-rock sound into the realms of the avant-garde, psychedelia and Indian music.
